I am very interested in the MSI GT72S with the i7 6820HK and the 980m. I have heard very good reviews about this laptop and i am liking the way it looks, how the GPU is able to be exchanged etc.. I am thinking about purchasing this laptop to replace my older computer with a HD 7850 and a fx 6300. But there is one thing that is preventing me from getting this laptop. The fan noise. I have yet to find out if the fans are louds or not. Not many reviews talk about the fan noise too much. They just say "You can here the fan kick in, but it's not bothersome" or something along the lines of that. So this is why i am asking owners of this laptop if the fans are noisy like an alienware or quiet and cant be heard.

There will be noise which is unavoidable but it is excellent compared to others as far as acceptable level is concerned. With GT series, the cooling system is the best in the gaming line with no compromise in performance.

If you want to try something, may I suggest the use of a laptop cooler to help to transfer cool air to the gaming system which should reduce any heat build-up therefore reducing the workload of fan.

Once you get the system then play with it for a few days, and then you can decide whether a notebook cooler is needed or not. Just my two cents. :)

You'll definitely hear the fans at peak load. Under mild use, they're quiet. Under stress, they hit around 35 dB; audible, but not dreadfully so.

    30-35 dB.
Very quiet conversation, private office noise.

It's definitely not the loudest system I've heard. A lot of the times when I've ran benchmarks on one, it didn't hit max speed on the fans too often.

By max speed do you mean as fast and loud as the fans with the turbo fan on?

Turbo fan is loudest because the speed is constant, auto is pretty quiet but sometimes the fan will rev up during intensive usage such as gaming.

You could choose to have it run at max speed, for best cooling. But if you leave it on auto, you would generally be good for temperatures as well.

The laptop seems to sound quieter than the Asus G751 and G752. And it has the same noise level as my main desktop.

They all have about the same level of quietness but in order to do a proper comparison a sound level measuring device is needed.

Do the fans ever hit max speed when during extensive gaming?

The fan speed responds to the temperature. If your game(s) push it that far, then sure.

If the fan speeds are major concerns for you, then you can use Svet's custom EC with revised fan table which may suit your requirement.

I'll have to look into to it. Im just concerned about the fan speeds because i had a dinosaur of a gaming laptop called the Asus G72GX that i bought a couple of years back that i returned that had an ancient GTX 260m and an Intel Core 2 Duo P8700. That laptop ran very hot and loud and thermal throttled after playing games for 5 minutes like no tomorrow. It was loud and very annoying to me and parents. I like the GT72S and im really close to buying it but i just don't want to through another gaming laptop thats loud and obnoxious.

It is decent (noise) and bearable. There are many reviews from users that mentioned about the noise level and they are generally good.

Not with GT series, especially on a 17" system.
The only time when a system overheats is due to lack of sufficient cooling, such as when the system has dirt blocking its air duct.
Under normal usages with care, the system does not overheat that easily.

You can see users with GT machines from the past generations that are still beating just fine.

And one final question. Is a very thick laptop? Would you consider it to be the thickest laptop you have ever used?
