This is the new 6820HK Skylake laptop with the 980 GTX (Non-M) onboard..
Has anyone actually overclocked it beyond 4Ghz with kept it stable w/o volt modifications in Win10 PRO?
Whats happening is when it comes out of sleep it will most times freeze at the lock screen then, within 10 seconds, reboot. I suspect its the lack of voltages so wondering what people have set as their core voltage in the BIOS or have you used any of those XTU profiles that can bump the speeds to 4.2Ghz but with volt changes. I know they seem to be for Alienware but curious if anyone was brave enough to use one?
Trying to get the max overclock for both the CPU and GPU (currently 150+ Core//200+ Mem with no volt changes) so any feedback would be very helpful!

I have my 6820hk overclocked to 4ghz and it did reboot once coming out of suspend. Strangely it also reenabled secure boot (which I need disabled in order to boot Linux). I haven't seen it occur again but its nice to know it may be related to the overclocking!

That would be my experience but I am OC'ing via the MSI Dragon Gaming Center in the Device Setting Tab (under CPU ratio set to 40x) and not in the BIOS right now as a test.
If I hit the FN+F12 keys to go into SLEEP within Win10 PRO then bring it out of sleep it will lock up immediately before I get to the unlock screen then immediately shut down and restart. :|
Also, noticing MSI notebooks are notorious for waiting before the MSI logo POST screen so sometimes it takes time to get to that initial MSI screen then it MAY or MAY NOT kick in to load the OS. Sometimes it will just reboot again at that MSI screen. :| May be OC-related also.
I need to trying increasing the voltage to 1.215V but in the BIOS how do you set it as Core Voltage does not do decimal places. -

I think that it might be a bios bug. I noticed while searching for driver downloads at MSI's global site a bios that "fixes" an issue with the overclocking ratio on S3 resume (resume from standby). I have no idea if this bios can be flashed to our machines, but it seems to be related to the issue we are having:

Overall I like the bios for this machine. The overclock gives a noticeable performance increase under Linux, especially when using Android Studio. -
Well mine applies to this section:

As you can see, there is no mention of an S3 Resume fix except for this:
Fix PS/2 keyboard can't work when press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice then into BSU.
:/
Of course, I don't remotely use a PS2 keyboard for a laptop. -

The build in keyboard and touchpad are likely ps2

Ah.. perhaps.. although is it worth going through the process of an UEFI Update process just for this fix I've never had an issue before?
I do have a small list of requested fixes so likely will try again on MSI's own support forums. Off the top of my head are the ones this GT72S need to be addressed:
1a) Both CPU and GPU Fans don't come on as aggressive reaching their max 4K RPM speeds by at least 100c.. They should both go to max speed at least by 80c and not wait to ramp up.
1b) Both CPU and GPU Fans should BOTH go on and not only one due to what is reaching 80c+ temps. (ie. when GPU goes to 80c+ only the GPU fan increases but not the CPU Speed?). Both fans should be dynamically maxed out to ensure full system airflow.
2a) When I OC the CPU (up to 4Ghz) either via BIOS or MSI Dragon Gaming Center when I put the machine to sleep in Win10 PRO, then bring it out of sleep, the laptop will crash at the lock screen, reboot, and the last sleep session was lost.
2b) Using only MSI Dragon Gaming Center to OC, I noticed after it loads the OS on boot, it takes 2.5mins to switch to the OC I set in MSI Dragon Gaming Center. Is this expected?
3) These laptops seem to have a real odd POST issue: when I either turn the laptop ON or restart from the OS, it sometimes takes a minute to get to the first MSI logo screen. Sometimes the laptop will turn off completely on its own once or twice then eventually show the MSI logo screen. Sometimes it will for no reason go into the BIOS menu (this happened 3 times in row for no reason) after a reboot.
4) SuperPort and plugging in some USB 3.1 docks or enclosures. Have a new USB 3.1 2xPort Docking Station which houses two HDDs vertically but when I plug it into the SuperPort then attempt to copy anything from my laptop to one of the drives the connection almost immediately dies OR the copy goes to 0 Mb/sec, waits, then gives unexpected error. This has happened before with another enclosure which was purely USB 3.1.Strange thing is: USB 3.0 docks and enclosures work like a charm. Could this still be immature USB 3.1 drivers for Win 10 PRO for this laptop?

The GT72 definitely has a non-agressive fan profile. With mine it seemed like they never even came on while I was playing games. Its both nice because I can have a quiet laptop in our office, but its also not nice because it probably limits how high you can overclock which is silly considering these are designed to do that. The last MSI mainboard I owned had some really nice fan control functionality in the bios. Would it be too much to ask for control over the fans like that? Something like being able to add a temperature / speed threshold would be amazing. If it were in the bios, then it works fine under Linux too instead of being tied to a Windows utility.
So far I have only used the USB 3.1 port to charge and sync with my Nexus 6p. Strangely, if I enable the "Thunderbolt update" option in the bios it makes Linux freeze when booting up and detecting the port... I don't have any Thunderbolt (or USB 3.1) devices but may purchase a Thunderbolt 3 dock in the future. -
- They already have something called "Silent Option" Fan control found HERE and HERE but, as you'll notice my current laptop isn't supported so I'm still waiting. Yes via the MSI Dragon Gaming Center it will dynamically engage the fans based on whether the CPU or GPU is tacked beyond 80c but its no where aggressive enough for me.
- Yeah try a USB 3.1 specific device on it and weird things happen when simply copying between the laptop and the 3.1 device attached to the SuperPort BUT attach a USB 3.0 device to it and never a problem and maxing out at between 169-189mb/sec going both way. -
So an update... from the list above, #2a, #2b and #3 are fixed so we're making progress. #1a and #1b are semi-fine for now.. more nice-to-haves. #4 will need to be addressed in the future but unsure if its SuperPort, BIOS, OS, or Cable-related (I used official USB3.1 cabling).
Btw, anyone know when in the BIOS when you have the option to change the CPU Core Voltage it only allows you to type it out in raw numbers with no decimals. So... how do you type in 1.215V? Is it 01215, 1215, or something else? Don't want to over-volt or make a mistake here just to not damage this new h/w. -
Can you please explain how your issues were fixed? Specifically #3? Because I just got my laptop yesterday and am having the delayed boot issue.
-
Bios Update did it for those.. Note my version now: it fixes all those except the stupid SuperPort issue with USB 3.1 devices.
Also, I had to use a 1.200V for my Core Voltage (set in the BIOS) as otherwise it won't properly wake up after sleeping. :| Still, glad that was the fix for me at least. -
Oh okay, so BIOS update directly from MSI website? I on whatever BIOS the computer shipped with atm.

Yep go right HERE for the download.
