    Hi all ,

I have been using my GT72 ( 970M version) for almost a month now . its an amazing in everything and overall I'm very satisfied with it . I just have 2 small questions:

1- Although the cooling system in this model is really improved over the previous GT70 series , the fans are quite audible even with no load ( just powered up or may be browsing some websites) in quiet environments . When I open the dragon gaming center , I found the temperatures are very good ( around 30s and 40s) for both GPU and CPU and fan speed is around 1700 RPM but you can still hear this small "whizzing" thing coming from the laptop . I never encountered that sound on my old GT70 model . so is this normal ?

2- since the battery is integrated in this laptop , does leaving it plugged all the time will make it die faster or it wont matter? I know there are a lot of debates in this topic but just making sure what approach suits this model the best

    Thanks in advance

    1) It may simply be the airflow itself being the noise, however without hearing a sound it's very hard to judge what it is.

    2) The machine handles the battery properly, only large shifts in temperature will impact battery life.

    1. Did you activate dGPU mode? The noise could be coil-whine which is normal from the GPU circuit.
    2. It can if it stays fully charged all the time, but you have warranty and the battery lasts about 500 cycles or more (if you get lucky). You shouldn't be concerned with its life because your notebook will last you a long time to come.

1- Yes its always on the dedicated GPU . But what makes me wander is I never encountered that sound with the GT70 with 870M although its supposed to be hotter than the 970M
2- So that means I have to discharge it every now and then to extend its life?

Coilwhine is rather independent of the GPU gen, its dependent on the actual GPU components. My 780m has coil whine when I slightly overvolt it.

It's a mix between all components involved in power delivery so how clean the socket supply is, brick components, motherboard power delivery and GPU power delivery and if that sets up any harmonics.

    1. It varies not only from GPU to GPU, but also module to module as well. If GPU was overclocked then this issue can become worse.
    2. You don't need to worry about charge/discharge it, just leave it alone and use it as necessary. Don't be troubled that you must try to extend battery life when it can actually fail randomly out of blue.

well I don't think its coil whine . I think its the fans doing this sound basically because :
    - I switched to the integrated Intel graphics chip
    - after the reboot , the sound is still there but some how quieter
    - from the dragon gaming center , I noticed that the RPM of the fans are less than the ones used to be with the Discrete Nvidia chip

I also dont think this is because the fans needs to be cleaned because I noticed this sound from day one

Does the tone of the noise change if you press the max fan button? When the dedicated GPU is off power draw will be much lower.

I've had my GT72 (GTX970M) for about 2 weeks and noticed the cooling fans are most always running in a low RPM mode when logged in and working/gaming. When the system is idle for 5 or 10 minutes the fans randomly ramp up to full speed for 5 seconds then ramp down. I upgraded the Bios to version 10Q with the hope it would fix this annoying fan cycling. Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes available?

And the firmware too? Update firmware to latest version 1781EMS1.510 http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT72-2QD-Dominator.html#down-firmware.

Have you monitored Task Manager to make sure this isn't a background service (or several) going crazy on CPU resources?

Probably an issue with the fan profile then. If an EC firmware update doesn't resolve it, you might need to contact MSI.

Ahh I know what you are talking about. I think i got same problem with my gt80. If compiter is not under load (idling) and only one right fan spinning then you can't even hear laptop. However when left fan starts spinning you can notice some buzzing like coil whine. After some time I got used to it.

For my first MSI laptop, I decided on the MSI GT72S Dominator Pro G-219. It is on order and is expected to arrive in the next couple days. Although I'm excited to tear into it and start playing, I know there are some things to accomplish first (update BIOS, firmware, and drivers).
Looking for any advice you experienced owners may have for a newbie. Thanks.

What type of games do you play? Other than removing any Norton/Symantec stuff and updating the nvidia drivers I didn't do anything. If everything works for the games you're playing I don't see any point in updating Bios, Video Bios or other such tweaking, unless you just like playing with such things. I install the 2-3 games I'm currently playing and get started.
