Can I swap in my old 4 bay m.2 adapter to a GT72VR and use the VR's bay in the older model?

I want to sell my old one and get the new 72.

The GT72VR only allows one m.2 drive.

There isn't enough channels to do such due to hardware limitation.

While its not exactly the answer your looking for you could try one of these:
StarTech.com 2x M.2 SSDs to 2.5" SATA (6Gbps) RAID Adapter Converter with TRIM Support 25S22M2NGFFR

    https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com...=1483578563&sr=8-1&keywords=startech+dual+m.2

It allows you to put 2 m.2 ssds into a SATA slot. I'm sure you won't get RAID speeds if thats what you planned on doing but it will allow you to use more m.2 ssd drives.

The gt72s allows for it by means of the adapter which has been reduced to a single slot on the vr. My questions is does the s bay adapter fit on the vr and is so does it allow for the same amount of drives and if not is there a difference to the motherboard that stops this. Also have you tested it.

Like we have said before, the GT72VR has not the same MotherBoard as the GT72S. The VR allows less m.2 drives.

    GT72S - CM236 - 20x PCIe lanes.
    GT72VR - HM170 - 16x PCIe lanes.

@Kevin@GenTechPC my GT72 6QD has a Hm170 chipset with a 2x Sata M.2 and 1x NVME M.2 slot on an adapter. Mine is a skylake system too. So a 4x adapter might not work however a 3 might. Bud it all depends on how MSI configured the DMI lanes really.

Yes that's correct, it is up to the design right from the beginning but it cannot happen without any kind of hard mod.
