Hi all,
So I have been looking at gaming laptop for a bit now, and I think I have settled on getting an msi gt72 dominator pro-g, I like the looks and by all the reviews I have read it seems to have very good cooling. My question is about what model to get. So the model I was looking at has a
but for a $100 more I can get
- i7 6700HQ, gtx980m 4gb GDDR5, also 256gb m.2ssd and 24gb of ddr4 ram
Is the cpu upgrade and more vram worth it, at the cost of losing 8gb of ram and 128gb of ssd space?
- i7 6820HK, gtx980m 8gb GDDR5, also 128gb PCIe ssd and 16 gb of ddr4 ram

Well, the 6820HK is an unlocked processor that is most likely going to achieve up to 4Ghz of speed, while the 6700HQ will cap at 3.5 or so, forgot it's max quad core turbo.
Another important thing to consider is the chipset, which lets you use RAID of PCIe SSDs in the case of the 6820HK model you are asking for, which are considerably faster. And lastly, you get 8GB of video ram which might be relevant for future titles, and for now only for a select handful of games like Shadow of Mordor.
I would totally go for 6820HK. You can always add more ram later, but you can no longer change the CPU or chipset. -
Yeah that's what I was thinking, I can add more ssd space and more ram later, but I won't be able to upgrade the cpu or increase vram on the 980m. Thanks for the reply.

I agree the 6820HK and PCIe is the way to go. It could depend on what you are using it for as if you aren't overclocking and worried about the super fast PCIe SSD, the latter would be the better deal. However, if you are a intuitive and demanding user, the extra speed of PCIe and HK would be well worth it

Both systems will treat you pretty well for the long haul. If you want a more viable upgrade path, pay the extra $100 and you can certainly squeeze more power out of that model with upgrades if you so wish.

If you use virtualization, the GT72S also supports VT-d which can give you direct access to hardware devices. The vanilla GT72 does not.

Take 200Mhz off the maximum turbo speeds to get the quad core turbo frequency guys
