    Hello :)

I'll take pics and detail all of this procedure.
I'll be using voodoo to make the card accept to be in a non VR GT72.
I'll keep my nvme 4 ports. Too bad i dont have a socketed CPU, I would upgrade it to a 4900MQ+^^

    Hi MSI :)

    Everything is okey.
Temps are not like I would like them to be. I'll do a repaste with IC Diamond.

Big Dislike to Eurocom which made a mistake in the postal code of my address which delayed the 80CAD-payed shipping. I wasnt given any bonus, goodies etc to make up for it .
    25/05/2017 : Ordered a 1060 MXM MSI at (01.00 GMT+2)
    25/05/2017 : Shipped.
26/05/2017 : in Canada waiting for the plane..
28/05/2017 : in South of EU.
29/05/2017: Eurocom put the wrong postal code in my shipment. This will delay it 2/3 days !
I sent a yelling email, and they better refund the 80 CAD of shipping.
30/05/2017 : Got lucky and saw the UPS driver in my neighborhood. Got the card !

Nice one man. Good luck just remember UEFI boot option only in bios else you will get a blank screen in power up.

Your windows install must be a UEFI install for it to boot into windows with UEFI bios option enabled. Legacy formats drive as MBR UEFI formats drive as gpt.

What power problem? The standard PSU of GT72 is more than enough for GTX 1060 and even GTX 1070.

230W of the GT72 makes it more than enough for 1060/1070. GT72-SuperSayan I mean VR is shipped with the same psu.
I'm currently looking for a dremel equivalent (too expansive for a one time use).
Amazon.fr and ebay are your Friends if u want to help me guys.
Dont know which tool can make it.

Sry my bad, i was assuming the 970M Variant draws less power so i guessed
they sold it with a weaker power brick, Just got my GT62VR today and it also
    comes with a 230W adapter.

I´ve been browsing the web and read stuff about the Mobo of the older GT62/72
do not support anything greater than 1060 but this might have been just rumours.

Still exited to see the work done and how it performs.

    Regards

@meni GTX970m draws the same as the GTX 1060N apart from a slight blip it GTX 1060N has a max draw of 83W.

CPU i7 6700HQ has a draw of 45W max but mine has never gone past that, the GPU maxes out at 83W so thats 128W total draw there so with all the other stuff in here like the Mobo, RGB lighting, 3 m.2 SSD's 2 2.5 HDD's call that 150W to 160W or even 180W, thats still well below the 230W PSU. The PSU i know for a fact isn't being strained as it doesn't get hot.

I am running a GTX 1060 in my GT72-6QD runs fine. It doesn't lock up games that used to struggle with even 75 fps on mix medium high and low settings are now hitting 75fps + on high in most titles i play temps haven't really gone stupid either 75c with my custom fan curve via silent option by which is only adding 10% on each part for CPU and GPU which is not bad at all.

There are users using 230W PSU's with GT72-2Qx series laptops that are running ok without issues infact better then that of the people that got GTX 1070's in the GT72VR/GT73 with the lockup issues and having to use a Debug vBios which keeps the clocks locked to 1445mhz on the GPU core and 3606mhz (7212mhz) on the ram.

As for Heatsinks @sasuke256 if you get the CPU heatsink from a GT72-6QD you can buy the GT72VR GTX 1060 heatsink and it will work fine without modding. GT72-2Qx series laptops have an issue with the VRM/Memory bridge from the GPU to the CPU i.e they do not fit however using a GT72-6QD CPU Heatsink for even GT72VR one will solve that issue. but thats totally upto you.

Also just found out that you can disable C-State to make the performance better stabilisation wise keeps the FPS from bouncing to much and solve latency issues if your suffering from them.

I think you have to change both (gpu+cpu) if you have a 4th/5th gen cpu-equipped GT72. The 6th gen lappies can use the GT72SuperSayan (I mean VR my bad), GPU heatsink.

Yes i am 100% sure about the CPU Heatsink from a GT72-6Qx series will work in a GT72-2Qx series laptop it is a heatsink of the same size and the copper contact for the CPU should easy fit the Haswell Broadwell CPU's.

BTW, there are users on NBR who put a 1070 in their GT72 too.
I do not know what they did exactly with the cooling system.
In the worst case you can make your own heatsink with some
precisely cut copper and arrange contact with liquid metal, if
you are ghetto enough and got some skills to dare that.

Or make an adaptor for the holes to align. I was told by someone on another forum that he just replace the cpu heatsink hence why I was sure about it. Will look at it when I get home though if someone has an image of the Harwell broadwell mainboard and the underside of the hsf for each might be able to come up with something.

    Im curous^^

I did dat even with normal thermal compound adding some "folded" copper plates to
my older MSI. I put it between the CPU and heatsingk and it was folded by 180° and
went almost over half of the chassis. I just cut the copper on the propper places
to be able to put the screws inside and isolated all possivle placec where it could
touch the mobo to avoid electrical damage.

But beware, the first time i was not carefull enough and my keyboard bended a little
bit, so you really need a good plan and vision to get it done.

Nothing impossible, of course. In fact I've made a temporary fix for that CPU heatsink - GPU heatpipe connection in my GT72 2PC just today. Furthermore, I've installed MSI GTX 1070, set bios to UEFI. And guess what? Nothing! Black screen on boot, no beeps, fans spinning as usual... This is my luck. Any suggestions?

Afaik the Bios (not vbios) needs an upgrade or mod but no guarantee!
If you screw up the bios you gotta solder a new one on it with a microsolder station
or even change the board. I´d be carefull. There are still different revisions on the
GT72. I can post you a link to one dude that have done it or ask woodzstack
on the forum here. I bet he met more people playing with this than i did with some casual reading.
Also make sure that your power brick is adequate too if you didnt alrdy. *fingers crossed for ya*

And once again, be carefull, Soldering the bios is a PITA.

Strange it should work. Take out the GPU and heatsink force the igpu to kick in power off then place the bios to legacy put back in the gpu and heatsink and power it back on to see if that works. Do you have a system you can test the card in to make sure its not a duff one.

"Strange it should work" - that's what I kept telling myself yesterday.
I'll try the Legacy mode and see if it's any different.
And unfortunately, I don't have another system to test it on...

As far as I understand, the card should work in every GT72 even without bios mod.
Because the system should boot in uefi mode ignoring bios not supporting the GPU.
    Check this:

But if you have any other information - do share, please. Everything is helpful.
