hi im on gonna buy a new laptop and its between the gt70 or the alienware m18x, first what about the brands ive heard good and bad things about them but never owned their products, on the tech side theres a few doubts about the gt70 what about the screen i know its matte and even though they are great for no reflections they lack the vivid colors of a glossy display hows the display for gaming, videos etc, ive saw deifferent resellers offering the color gamut upgrades if anyone has the glossy updates how is the screen compared to the one that ships and finally i dont know if its better to wait for the gtx680m and windows 8 that are a few months away. thats about it thanks

The choice of matte or glossy is more a user preference, glossy makes colours look great but some find it unreal. matte is less colourful, but light reflection is minimal so can be used in all conditions.

Personally my last laptop had a glossy screen which was impossible to see in moderate sun, the colours were fantastic but thats all pointless if you cant see them. For that reason ive gone for the matte on my gt70. It seems quite a few manufacturers are moving back to matte this year. From reading alot of threads on this forum, from what i have read it seems many people prefer matte.

So i guess it depends on what conditions you will be using the laptop in and if you want to the colours to be more bright and vivid.

Also read through the msi gt70 owners lounge theres quite a few comments about this.

Matte is the way to go, the "vivid" colors on glossy are fake.

They are the true colors being over saturated by the display, matte displays were the original display and they they started to make glossy displays one day so that they could save money and manufacture cheaper panels with worse colors and then artificially cover it up with the glossy coating.

I am so glad to see matte come back again and the GT70 screen is really nice, super good view angles, the best white/black contrast I have seed on a laptop, omg bright (I keep mine at the lowest brightness for normal use)

    I'll just say this:

Monitors were made so you could see information displayed.
Mirrors were made so you could see yourself.

Who ever decided to put the two together, should be shot in the face. Twice.

    Ditto to the nth power.

I have an older HP laptop with a glossy screen and from would have like to take it out on the back deck so I could get some sun and some web surfing at the same time. Well, had to nix that idea....the glare was ridiculous. Same for using it at a coffeeshop...I had to make sure my back was against a wall...otherwise I'd get glare from the windows.

Matte is the only way to go.

The Color Gamuts screens are incredible actually. That percentage is rated at all color shades the human eye can see. So, a 90% color gamut screen is 90% of all color shades the human eye catches. It is really impressive to see the difference side by side. The standard screens are typically 60% color gamuts as standard.

To me, doing a lot of graphic design work and movie watching, I love the glossy screens. The glare does not bother me at all and I think the colors pop a bit more.

You can upgrade both of those later, better yet upgrade to the 7970m soon after you get it.

This is the exact opposite of what somebody should be after that does "a lot of graphic design work" because you want to work with an accurate color space and when your working on a glossy screen what you see is not what your producing.

No pro should want to fight glare, and unlike desktops that you can sit one one place laptops are portable for utility and having a glossy screen removes tons of utility because then over 90% of the places you would want to use it have some kind of glare issues.

If its outside or near a window its the sun, if its inside its bright overhead lighting found in most public places. Its only in dimm lit places or the dark that a glossy screen does not make you stair through glare.

Your more than welcome to have your opinion and prefer glossy screens but this is the first time ever I have seen anybody that does graphics say they prefer it, and nobody I know would dare say that who does it professionally.

Just to add, my brother is a pro photographer and would not use a screen on high gamut for the reasons vicious mentioned. If he uses a high gamut screen the overall produce of the photo will not be the same and therefore does not allow him to be accurate with his albums.
