Whenever I use the displayport output of my GT70, the graphics switch to nvidia, regardless of what programs are running. I can't seem to force integrated graphics to run with the displayport in use. Anyone else experience this?

That is because the Display port output is directly connected to the nvidia GPU, and it does not go through the intel integrated GPU. Only the integrated display, and depending on your model, the VGA, are routed to the intel GPU. Everything else uses exclusively the nvidia graphics.

Which is a great thing! :D

    Ah, OK. That makes sense.

My plan was to sell my desktop and exclusively use the laptop, keeping it on 24/7. I'm starting to wonder if that's going to be a good idea, though. The GT70 is awesome, but it wasn't exactly designed to be a closed desktop replacement...lots of functions I can't access with the lid closed, and of course I can't make use of the intel graphics at all with the external displays attached.

Well, to be honest, I used my older GT60 as a desktop for 90% of the time. I placed it on top of a cooler pad, connected external multimedia keyboard, mouse and monitor. I didn't really need any of the functions of the laptop for the most part, that I remember.

I used it like this for about a year. It still works like a charm, no issues, though it is now back being a laptop. :)

Ah, awesome to know it didn't have any struggles. I'll probably keep my desktop anyways since it isn't getting any interest on CL.

I used Thinkpads for a long time and got very used to their docking stations and software providing very good desktop-replacement functionality. But it seems outside of the Thinkpad world, that's just not the norm.

As my Amilo 4438 screen died in 2005 I had to buy an external monitor. First 21.5" and later 27". A wireless kb was a natural addition and since then all my laptops are run on external screen - no way to go back to those tiny screens.

Keep the lid open just a smidge and it is fine, or keep it open and disable the inbuilt display. The fan does draw air from the keyboard area so if you shut the lid the machine will run hotter.
