MSI GT70 780m laptop downgrade

Hello,

I am sure this is not normal of people to do, but after searching for quite a while on these forums, I was unable to find an answer.

Basically, my gtx 780m graphics card died in my GT70 laptop. I attempted to repair it, but to no avail. The laptop runs just fine without the card in it, except that the fan doesn't recognize a temperature, so the fan is running at max speed as soon as I boot up, until I turn it off.

I figure that if I put something in place of the old card, it will stop running the fan at max speed, but I obviously want to put something compatible. This is where I am at now. Is this motherboard able to downgrade to a 765m card? Which I found here on amazon:

So, would I be able to use the Quadro, the gtx, or none of the above? I want to basically replace the card as cheaply as possible to make it a media center for my livingroom, and no longer a gaming powerhouse. (so I don't want to spend $1000 on a new 970m upgrade).

 

How do you know that the faulty part is GPU but not the mainboard? Sometimes, the problem is not related to GPU but the mainboard. You can consider the option of sending the system to MSI for diagnostic and price quote, if it's not worth it then you can do it yourself after you determined the root cause of failure.

 

970M costs like 300bucks, idk where u got the 1k USD price from.

Also why not just remove the fan?

 

Not yet, but as they get more scarce they'll shoot right up in price. IIRC the last few 580Ms I saw sell (new anyway) were going for $1100 or more.
