I recently obtained my GT70 (670MX) about a day ago and i find that I can't update drivers directly through Nvidia, only the issued MSI drivers via the disc it came with. I'm apparently stuck on 306.14(?) and I can't install the new beta drivers in 310.70 or even 306.97. Does anyone know if this is standard within MSI notebook products or is it just my machine?
I'll also note I'm on windows 8.

Bump
If anyone knows why graphic driver installs won't work it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me. Not sure if I should send it back or not. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 670MX is too new to have been rolled into the latest packages, you could try using a modified INF from laptopvideo2go.com.
-
Oh I see, thanks a lot for the response. I thought it was odd since the at the bottom at the download page it said the MX series were supported with the newer drivers. Thanks again.
-

Not sure if it helps, but you could try downloading the driver and doing a manual install via the device manager. But if it won't take from the software package, then it might be best to hold out until it's patched so that you can use that driver without workarounds.
-
Yeah I decided to wait until Nvidia official supports it in new drivers. I tried deleting initial drivers in the device manager and then installing them but the driver installer never recognized the GPU. I believe I did this in Safe Mode. It'd only recognize the drivers from the disc MSI gave me. I don't mind waiting it out as I'm really enjoying the laptop. Thanks again for the responses.

Nvidia drivers tend to be quite picky about being manually installed, I never had much luck with it.
Modified infs while reading as not WHQL will give you the full proper driver set so it's worth a shot. -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
Just download the driver.
If your playing the newest games you should be trying out the WHQL Official NVIDIA 310.70 driver.
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/54534
Download the driver to the desktop.
Right click on the downloaded file and select run as administrator>choose Custom installation>uncheck what you don't need or want>check the clean installation box -
Received my GT70 today 1/2/2013 .I have this aswell GT70 - w/ Nvidia 670MX , driver are only available from MSI, current driver is 306.14 from Septmeber. so some of the games will require newer version to play. even doing the " are you ready for Hawke" test from nvidia site., says my card isnt enuff. even though , specs is higher for game required. so drivers sux's. laptop been out for awhile, so now its Janauary, and no good current drivers....

Won't work. I actually RMA'd (flimsy hinge on the Matte Screen cover) my old gt70 for a newer one and now I'm having the same issue as PwrPak actually with the exact same driver this time. GPU usage fluctuates intensely from as low as 30% to 99% during gameplay in Guild Wars 2. Vindictus will forever stay at 30%~50% with everything maxed out while getting horrible frame rates. I've uninstalled drivers and re-installed through safe mode. Nothing has helped so far and quite frankly I'm ready to just say screw it and get a refund(again).
I can see why people stick with consoles to say the least. -
I finally decided to use a modified inf like Meaker suggested (from 306.14 to 306.97, heard 310.70 is having issues actually) and still nothing. I'm beginning to assume it's Windows 8 Updates not sitting right with these new cards and their drivers. The cpu is fine, the gpu is more than fine (the random spikes to 99% load show it can hit 55~60 fps GW2 all high).

In all the posts no one mentioned this is on Windows 8.
Is anyone with the GTX670MX or GTX675MX also having driver issues on Windows 7 or is this strictly a Windows 8 thing?
I gave Windows 8 a long run from Feb 29th to December 31st but for the new year I've gone back to my Windows 7 drive for all my daily use.
I'll keep W8 Pro on the secondary drive and peek in on it weekly.IMO it's not ready for prime time. -
LOL Windows 8 is poison
-
My OP says it's on Win 8. The first GT70 I got came with Win 8 and it didn't have the issue of heavy fluctuating of GPU usage, just the inability to upgrade graphics drivers at will. I was fine with it until I decided to RMA due to physical flaw and get a new one. It's either Nvidia not giving us completely compatible drivers with new hardware or MS and their Windows Updates not sitting right with the new hardware.
The 670MX/675MX never came with Win 7 if I remember correctly since the cards were quietly released around the time Windows 8 released. -

In some regions the notebooks are sold without an OS installed. The laws protect the consumer.Elsewhere the laws protect Microsoft.
The notebook buyer has the choice to use Windows 7 bios and W7 OS or any other OS they want to install. They're not saddled with an OS they don't want or already own.
US buyer don't get the option to buy a new MSI without Windows 8 preinstalled and Windows 7 Home Premium is not an authorized free optional choice. -
Other users with driver installation issues not on Win 8 along with different graphics cards:

Third link, the guy has the installation error on Win 8 but he also reproduced the same error on Win 7 after reformatting and installing 7.
I'm just going to return it. I wanted a good 17" 1080p laptop for college (programming, video and audio editing, Unity and Accounting) and multimedia uses with good sound and graphics capabilities. This seemed like an awesome buy for only $1400 but so far it has been a pain. Anyways, I appreciate the help everyone and I hope others can find a solution. -

These are gaming machines and the most gaming friendly OS is windows so it's not too much of a surprise.
I don't see why you can't downgrade it to windows 7, the bios will allow it still. -

NVIDIA Official WHQL notebook Verde driver version 310.90 released
64bit W7 & W8:
Drivers | GeForce
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windo...win7-winvista-notebook-release-notes-whql.pdf -
Update on the issue. It isn't Windows 8.
MSI tech support gave me a new EC firmware for the MS-1762 model and now its running absolutely perfect. GPU usage is constantly 90%+ or a constant 99% on high/ultra setting in gw2. Temps are at a smooth 65c with a cooling mat and no turbo fans on (68c without mat). I also advise turning off Intel Speedstep in the BIOS as it appeared to be gimping my CPU usage and clockspeed.
If I'm right, the windows 8 EC firmware is outdated and it's really just win 7s firmware for MSI models. They shipped their Windows 8 models with said outdated firmware and just released their windows 8 specific firmware on the 4th of January. T16 - Windows 7/ T17 - Windows 8.
**nhttp://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162629.0 -- Describing the different firmwares between T16 and T17. **
The driver issue is none other than Nvidia being lazy on their part with new hardware but I am now a happy customer. Thanks for the help everyone and it is greatly appreciated. I hope this thread can be of help to others in the future.

The most important reason to install the updated driver software is due to a security update for the NVIDIA Display Driver service (nvvsvs.exe).
NVIDIA graphics card owners who don't update to the latest drivers are susceptible to a potentially harmful security hole that allows a remote attacker with a valid domain account to gain super-user access to any system running older drivers.
It introduces performance improvements in a handful of titles especially Black Ops 2 and Assassin's Creed III. NVIDIA says GeForce GPU owners can expect up to 26 faster performance in Black Ops 2 and up to 18 percent in Assassin's Creed III, as well as smooth, shimmer-free graphics with TXAA antialiasing in both games. -
I got a few questions relating this problem,
first off, is it the gt70-0nc-494US that you got?
You say you got a new EC from the tech support, is that something that's available on the website or do you have to ask for it specifically ?
After installing the EC on W8 (if I got that part right) were you able to install the nVidia 310,90 driver without a problem ?
Just wondering since I've been working on the same problem as you have ^^,
Cheers, Oli -

And here is the link for the download: ** http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-0NC.html#/?div=Firmware**. You just have to pick between the one for backlight keyboards or no backlight. The EC firmware update fixes the unnecessary throttling it does on both the CPU and GPU.
Hope everything works out for you.
-
Thanks for the link notice improvement immediately with gpu, cpu usage and few games run better, but i think i messed something else up when i was flashing EC my flash usb and optical mouse where connected and know every time i reset or turn on nb i have to go into bios and exit to boot otherwise will just reset on MSI logo, did i screw bad with this?

If turbo is causing it to throttle I would check to see if the CPU heatsink needs a re-paste. -

It takes Nvidia a release or two to finally add newer products, for now modded infs from laptopvideo2go should be fine.

MSI added beta 310.90 for GeForce and Quadro on January 11th to the driver downloads.
MSI Global â Download Center
What's surprising is that the Official WHQL 310.90 was reased by NVIDIA on Januaty 5th. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Likely it was raised as a higher priority due to the security fix.
-
well I got the beta 310.90 driver, haven't crashed BF3 yet (was a serious problem with the 306 driver)
But when I'm using afterburner it shows the stats of the graphics card but when I have a option ingame choosing witch graphics card it uses I can't select the GTX670MX only the intel HD graphics (internal)
Anyone know why that is ? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Could you choose before? Mostly games are only presented with the HD4000, the fact there is a GPU doing the rendering is masked from the game.
-
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
This selection is handled by the graphics driver and not the game to ensure compatibility.
