I've just purchased an MSI GT70 2PC (see specs below), and have encountered some problems with it. Whenever an HDMI cable is plugged into my laptop, my GPU temperature reading will eventually (in 5 to 20 minutes) jump from 40 degrees celsius to 255 degrees celsius (according to MSI Dragon gaming center numbers). This forces my fan to go into overdrive (5k RPMs) and it sounds like a jet is going off. The GPU is clearly not that hot, in fact the air coming out of the fan is cool and when I use another tool like MSI afterburner it confirms a cool 40 degree GPU even when the other tool is reading 255. The only way for the fan to calm down is to remove the HDMI cable, which makes streaming stuff to my TV difficult.

I contacted MSI for support, we updated the BIOS, updated the Intel graphic controller (because the MSI tech guy claims the intel integrated chip controls the HDMI port, even though all the MSI graphic software clearly indicates that it is the GTX 870M that does /shrug). None of these updates fixed anything. I then returned the laptop to the store in case it was a hardware problem, got a new rig, and the same thing happened...

Has anyone seen or heard of this issue and or have any suggestions?

The fan will go up normally a little when you plug the hdmi in since the gpu is turned on as the hdmi is connected to it rather than the igp.

Try turning off the msi dragon control centre (the vga is igp connected too)

Yes, I am not concerned about the slight RPM increase, I am concerned about the maxed out fan RPM and the false temperature reading. I tried turning of the dragon gaming center and it did nothing. Fan still went nuts after plugging in the HDMI.

I've not seen this behavior before. If other programs are showing it correctly it could be an odd EC issue. Have you tried a bios and ec update? They are packaged together.

Yes, that is the first things the MSI tech support team suggested I do.

Have you installed anything else that monitors anything?

With the original rig, I did install MSI afterburner to monitor the GPU temperature, on the replacement rig that I currently have, I have not installed any other monitoring software.

Well some error means after 20 mins of the dgpu being turned on and idling basically some part of the ec is loosing track of the temps and maxing out its bit value (255 is the largest 8 bit number possible). It's not something I have seen but it's a firmware sort of issue that you may need to discuss directly with MSI (try contacting svet over at the msi.com forum).

I have the exact same problem on my gt60 2pc. Did you ever get a solution?
