It isn't even officially announced yet so it could possibly still take a while for it to launch :p

I think I probably would have preferred this setup, but I am still very happy with my purchase.

I'm definitely intrigued by the Optimus-ability but perusing over notebookcheck.com it seems the 460M and the 5870M are really really similar in performance, with the 460 coming out ahead in some tests and the 5870 coming out ahead in others. Is that accurate or am I just missing something?

I ask because as much as I want the Optimus feature, it seems a little misguided to wait 1 or 2 months to get the 'same' video card as I could right now.

They were very similar ...until the 460m BETA driver was released. It provided a whopping 15% performance increase on various tests (3-D, etc.). I've only seen test results so far and not gaming performance with the new driver.

Late October (is the estimate). The G53 is planned at the end of September (hopefully, since I confirmed this with two Asus reps and am waiting for a third confirmation via e-mail).

this will make a perfect college laptop for next fall. I hope there will be a barebones unit, as 8gb ram is only 180$, and a core i7 920XM is only $380, would make for a ridiculously powerful rig.

Umm... The cheapest I could find for a 920XM on Google Shopping is $870. Where are you finding it for $380?! I want it for $380!

I think the 660 have 1.3, but I would think that the 663 would have 1.4 to be 3D capable with the 460m

You would be sacrificing optimus for that CPU, remember. And that is a crazy cheap 920XM.

Sure I can compare them to G51. The MSI GX660 speakers are better by such a wide margin, that it's not even funny. From quality (sound is so clear and authentic) to loudness... they are just on another level.

I am not making it up when I say these speakers are the best laptop speakers I have ever heard.

Regular laptop speakers are cheap and rarely have this quality.

I think all new GT and GX660 laptops have these awesome speakers.

Could you please post what the audio chipset is? If I am to buy this Gt663, then I will most definitely convert it to hackintosh/windows hybrid. So, I need to start preparing drivers for it. Whatever it is, I just hope the sound quality is better than my GX720, because it's horrible on mine. GX720 has to major cons: not the greatest screen quality, even at 1920x1200. And the sound quality is garbage.

I can give it a check. Where should I look to find out the chipset?

I also owned a G51 and I'll say what Ry said: the difference between the MSI and the Asus are so huge it's not even funny. I mean, the MSI has a real subwoofer.

It just says Realtek High Definition Audio. Trust me, the sound is great. The sound card won't be doing anything for you if your speakers suck. Thankfully, the 2.1 sound sytem of the MSI GX660R is rock solid.

Can't compare to your 720 but the GX660 is excellent. Great speakers and great depth and clarity. Also it does support 5.1 via analog ports, I have my HPA2 headphones working on it as well. Overall if you love sound you'll love this laptop.

Heh, was gonna say. From what I heard the outside appearance will pretty much be the GX660, with the only differences being some of the innards.

I actually wonder how that'll work out. The GTX 460m is larger, physically, than the 5870, right?

Should be fine. GTX 460M's GF106 die size is larger than the Mob. HD5870's RV840 but it's still smaller than the GTX285M's 55nm G92b die.

The whole cards themselves are all probably the same size.

Interesting. I don't know where or when I saw it, but someone had a photo of a GTX 460m--I think it was a 460m--and it was ginormous compared to a 5870.

Although, it might have been a 480m card. I can't recall.

I wouldn't say ginormous but GTX 460M is larger than the Mob. HD5870 chip but not as large as GF100 is.

This TechReport review of the desktop GTS 450 has a good estimated die size chart and a comparison shot of GF106(GTX 460M) vs Juniper(Mob. HD5870).

True, but the actual card itself for Asus so far is GINORMOUS. It's huge, almost 50% bigger. They had to redesign it to fit inside the G73. It doesn't go in the same slot with same design as G73jh. So you can't just shove a 460M in a G73jh, it won't fit.

Also there is word on Optimus from MSI...it's no. Official specs list a PM55 chipset.

I don't want to get anyone in trouble but I asked one of our favorite dealers and they asked the MSI rep. and said it would be available sometime in the first or second week of novemember.
