I'm going to get a new cooler tomorrow (as a "present" lol) and jump in again the OC race. Try to achieve a stable OC over 3.2GHz with decent temps. Stay tuned... :D

Not a big Success. 3.4GHz is the absolute top. Too much heat and I've noticed some power related throttling.

Singular1ty: what's the temps of your GTX? Have you tried undervolting it?

Hey guys, happy new year :)

    @ Kirrr
The GTX still runs pretty hot in GTA IV with a minor overclock, I've noticed it getting up to 100 degrees but haven't tried undervolting it. At the moment my laptop is only used for playing movies so I haven't been paying attention to it in months :/

    Hello!

Do you think I could put a gtx 460m in a GT 628?
The graphics card is from a Alienware m18x

    EDIT: Is a used gt 628 worth $ 350?
    It includes:

GTS 160M (As I thought about replacing, if possible)
    t6600
    80GB HDD

No, the card type is different. The possibilities are: gtx 260m, gtx 280m, quadro fx3600, fx3700 (the same as 280m), 4850, maybe 4870.

1280x800 and medium 30-45Fps. But the game stutters sometimes and the single player is boring, so I deleted it. No multiplayer experience.

There's no such thing as a 'cheap' GTX280M. It's rare to start with, let alone in MXM-HE format. The price you're being offered for the laptop is decent but be prepared to drop half that money again if you're looking to upgrade the GPU. Also the T6600 is pretty low powered so you'd wanna upgrade that as well. Upgrades for these laptops are becoming harder to get, and it won't ever support DirectX 11. In short if you wanna play BF3 and don't already own the laptop it might be a more solid investment to look for something newer.

If all this doesn't put you off, go ahead and buy the laptop. Upgrades should be easiest to find on forums like this one and eBay. Make sure to report your findings if you go crazy with it :)

Singular1ty is right. This is and old machine. If you want to play newer games, follow the easier way, and buy a new system with dx11 video card, and sandybridge cpu.

Hello to everyone :) I am new here and my English is not so good so please be patient :D . I have this notebook (GT 628) and i am looking for more perfomance, i don´t need a new notebook. I want to buy Intel Q9200 and Nvidia GTX 280M. I have some questions about it. I read the whole topic, but still i have some questions in my mind.
    1. Do i need to upgrade bios? Notebook is 2 years old, warranty gone.
    2. Do i need new power supply adapter?
    3. Cooling..(upgrade cooling or anthing else to do with cooling?)
    4. Nvidia GTX 280M is good card, but i can´t find anything about, what is need to cool down this card. I am worry about that this card will overheat my notebook :(

Now i have T6600 processor and in 3D mark 06 i have about 8600 points. And i will be happy if i can get over 12000 points it is possible?

Thank you for you tips and answers :)

Hello. Welcome to GT628 tuners. Let's answer your questions:
    1. No, you don't need to upgrade bios.
    2. I think you already have the bigger 120W brick. That will be enough.
    3. I suggest you to buy some decent notebook cooler. For example a Coolermaster U2 or U3, or one of the Zalmans.
    4. Yes its a hot card. (my 260m either) But with a good cooler there should't be any problems

12K points. That is only possible for me when my cpu is at 3.2GHz but you will get 11K for sure. The 280m is a bit stronger than mine so maybe 12K is possible with only a minor overclock on the cpu.

Is it possible to change my vga to an AMD (ATi) variant? For example an Alienware 4850 or 4870? (same socket, and size)

They'll fit and work as far as I read online. You may need to do a bit of creative engineering though as it seems the AMD cards sometimes come with a backplate that doesn't fit right off bat.

How so? Will you be able to get your hands on one anytime soon? They're exceedingly rare but pretty much the fastest card you can put in this laptop. I also hear they run a bit cooler than their GeForce counterparts?

Just popped up some on Ebay. A 4850 from an M17 and a 4870 from I don't know. Because they are both 1GB version, wich is strange because I thought that there is no 1GB version of the 4870 in mxm2.1. Just 512MB for the W90's Crossfire setup.

I still have the GTS so if I can sell it, I'll get the money for a red card. As for backplate, that's can be a problem. I have 2 different nVidia part (clevo, msi) maybe one of them will work.

The heatsink would need one small part cut off, otherwise I'm pretty sure it will not fit.

I see other problems. The holes for the backplate are smaller than on my nVidia, so if the ATi card doesn't have the backplate I'll be in trouble.

I found the cards on eBay and it's kinda tempting to just give it a shot, but then again I'm going to China for 3 months and need my money. Don't think I'll be selling the GTX for a good price before I leave, the GTS160M has been lying in a drawer ever since I removed it, too.

Plus an HD4870 will be what, 20% faster maybe? Meanwhile it means I'd be dropping another 225 dollars excluding shipping on this laptop while the euro is at an all time low. Nah... If I ever feel I really need a faster laptop I'm getting some shiny Ivy Bridge rig with a 540M, overclock that to GT555M speeds etc etc. Probably cheaper than upgrading too, spent waaaay too much cash on this MSI thing

Tried installinh lates drivers. Now im having black screens. Led indicators are lit up. Ill try installinggts 160m back then uninstall the driver and try again.

    -edit-

ok so I inserted the gts160m again. then did a system restore. i uninstalled the nvidia display driver and used driver sweeper this time then re-inserted the hd4870m and installed catalyst 11.3 driver. so far so good. ill be repasting it again later then try running some games.

will do when im off duty again. i may also need to do a clean install of windows just to be sure everything is all working properly. idle temps is around the gts 160m temps though so its still quite hot.

is there any other way to lower temps? ive already repasted but my temps are still going up to 99 deg while playing swtor. this is with backplate removed and the back elevated by a few in in an airconditioned room. :(

Thats hot. My GTX with bottom panel on can reproduce that, but with a cooler or bottom panel off, its way cooler.

Does the paste spread well? Is the cooling plate attached correctly to the card? I think there's a little gap between the cooling plate and the gpu die.

    What's your idle temp?

my idle temps are around 50-60 depending on the location.

aside from the high temps on swtor, there's no problem at all. tried anno 2070 and i can play it with settings all in high. thats a big improvement over my gts 160m which i can only play decently on low settings. temps go up to 79-80 with backplate off on a cooler master u3 laptop cooler in a room without airconditioning which i find it quite strange. ill also try battlefield 3 again when the stupid offline error from origin gets fixed.

im planning to buy an ssd next month so ill postpone any clean installation till then. I might try underclocking my 9200 to lower temps some more.

Decided to do a clean installation now as im not sure if i can get an ssd next month. I might just buy a 7200rpm drive instead.

one thing that i just noticed after running gpu-z is that my default clock and memory is different from the gpu clock and memory. (screenshot below)

anyone know how to fix this?

I think it's the idle clocks of the card. When you run some 3D application then the clocks goes up to the default numbers.

oh okay so this is something i shouldn't worry about? I was observering it also while in swtor the default clock remains the same. but in msi afterburner it is showing that it is running on 500 clocks 800 memory but sometimes it goes down to 700.

Pretty neat to see you got a 4870 working, congrats. I'm on an internship in China right now so the old beast is getting a bit of attention, and I'm having throttling issues in GTA IV with the GTX260M. I run it on a slight overclock with NVinspector and it seems to throttle for no particular reason when gaming. Temperatures ain't too high at least, 70-80 degrees-ish. I'm gonna try locking those clocks with afterburner later.

The throttle can be power related. I have it also, when I OC the quad. 120W just isn't simply enough sometimes. On the notebookcheck page you can see that they measured over 150W with the gts and the non extreme Q9000. So with the Extreme cpu and the GTX its suffers. Since I discovered this I use the quad undervolted to the lowest possible 1.05V and there's no throttling at all.

Hmmm do take into account I'm running a dualcore here, undervolted at stock clocks... It doesn't throttle in Dirt 3, weird stuff.

Maybe a program like Throttlestop is interfering? Or perhaps the MSI drivers got messed up.

why did you go back to T6600? I bought a Q9200 and will put it in my gt628 this evening. GPU is at this moment the gts160m. A 4850 is on his way. Have you got any important tips for me?

I started to sold out my rig. The Quad was gone today, and the laptop will go in 2 weeks, with the GTX (and GTS)
Looking forward to an Acer right now... or maybe an HP I don't know it yet...

Congrat. for your investment. That will be a great gaming machine. Tips: dust free vents and decent thermal paste.

edit.: today I noticed that the whole system is much cooler with the T66. Temps below 75*C without any cooling modifications. (laptop on table)

Back to my old topic. One of my friend just bought a GT628 with a QX9300 and 8GB ram. An SSD will be in place tomorrow and then comes a vga (because there's nothing in the slot currently) What should we buy? Stick to the GS/GTS or as in my model the GTX? Or maybe a Quadro? The machine will be used for CAD and similar programs.
