I Hi there.
I have this laptop for a while. And I want to OC the cpu for a little bit.
What are the safe clock/voltage settings for this cpu in this laptop?
Now it maxed at 1.3V and ~2.4Ghz. (the stock speed and the automatic voltage for that) I try some OC earlier but its unstable at 3.1GHz (i don't know the actual voltage)
So anybody have this laptop with this cpu? I appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Why don't you know the actual voltage?
-
That was one or two months ago. And I just remember that it got bsod so I don't play with it.
Btw I used Throttlestop for the oc and the multiplier goes up 11.5 or 12 if I remember correctly. But I haven't watched the voltage and than comes the bsod, so I keep it on the stock speeds. -
I got an GT627 with the Q9200. The default voltage is 1.163v, 1.3v is quite a lot. 3.1Ghz stable? Maybe for some bencharmks, but never 100% stable, not with the cooling we have. I got 2.8Ghz / 1.18v stable 24/7 with decent temperatures, but close to the limit. I can go to 2.9 but the laptop runs way hotter and the difference in performance is not noticeable at all. 3.2Ghz for some short benchmarks is my maximum.
-
3.1Ghz was unstable, gave me a bsod loop. I think so, that 1.3v is too much. But why 1.3v@stock if 1.163v is enough for you when you oc it?
If I get home, I'll try your settings and make an oc to 2.8GHz on your voltage settings. Heat can be a problem for me too, but the new thermal grease is on the way. And I also want a ColerMaster U2 cooler.
Edit.: Today I find out that the Turbo button isn't working with the Q9200. I have the newest BIOS and it worked fine, whit the original T6600.
Btw the 2.8GHz setting works with TS. Now it's under prime95 and monitored with Core Temp. -
Turbo is not working with quads.
-
Are you measuring the voltage with TS? IIRC you have to edit the config, otherwise it won't read the voltage properly. Since I don't remember the line you have to add/change, I attach you my TS already configured
Download
Tell me how it works for you, and remember all the credit is for the developper of TS, unclewebb -
One of my friends made it to work, with a Q9100ES Stock clock is 2.26GHz an with the Turbo it goes to 2.66GHz.
But its not too important for me, now I'm happy with 2.8GHz using TS.
Edit.: Thanks Nitro. I'll try your settings as well as that I made earlier today. Lets see whats the best... -
Yeah, editing the settings with SetFSB you can use the Turbo, but if I'm not wrong you need to do it every time you restart your computer...
Good luck, keep us updated. -
Yes! It works well. Temps with my crappy Spire cooler, maxed around 80-82 celsius. Now i have a stable oc so I'll try to push it a bit. Try to reach 3Ghz...
Side question: is this work with 2x4GB Ram? -
What software are you using to stress the CPU? I got up to 92 C in the hottest core when rendering... and I'm a using a not crappy Zalman cooler
2x4Gb? Check this out -
I just run GTA for an hour. So thats not exactly 100% for all the time. Today I'll try with prime95 after installing IC Diamond. Btw its idle in the low 40s.
As for the ram. The 628 use ddr3 and i don't want to oc the ram. I'll try it if I have some time. -

Hey do you guys with the quad core CPUs happen to know the board revision number of your motherboards?
Mine is ver 0C.
I'm thinking about getting a new motherboard, one like yours that supports quad core CPUs.
I want a board like NitroNitrous has, with ddr2 ram and quad core support. -
Yeah mine idles at low 40s also, but try to make work all 4 cores at 100% constantly and you'll see the difference
I'm not sure about the 2x4Gb ram, since even if yours uses DDR3 the MSI website says max 4Gb as well... I guess trying yourself is the only way. I wouldn't mind getting myself a 8Gb kit but DDR2 is kinda expensive.
moral hazard, let me know where I can find that information and I'll check it.

Mine is the GT627-246UK, I think it was the only GT627 sold with quad core... -

I'll take a photo of the place you can read it from in the morning. You have to take the panel off that gives you access to the HDD to see the number. Not sure if it's the same with your notebook.

CUSTOM NOTEBOOK MSI MS-1651-ID2 (DDR3) Core2 Performance Notebook, 15.4" WXGA/WSXGA+ TFT LCD, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 160M 1GB Graphics : AVADirect Custom Computer Configuration
Here if you configure the ram there's an option for 8gb... so I'll try it as soon as I find some 4gb sticks. -
The laptop has been tested and it works with 8Gb RAM. I don't know about temperature though, as quoted in the post of NitroNitrous.
-
In that topic the rams are hot, because of the owner oc'd them (stock 800Mhz to 990Mhz)
Update: prime95 temp 88-92*C. Gosh its hot as hell. But without IC Diamond. -

Alright, I'll check it out later today, I gotta leave now. Don't worry about the sticker, I removed it long time ago. I sent it to the technical service after that to replace the internal fan and they didn't complain, and they didn't put another one so MSI doesn't give a sh!t about the sticker
-
Mine is not DDR2 but its VER:2.1
The 2.8GHz looks stable for gaming. So now I search for an fx3700m and a pair of ram with a valuable price. -
moral hazard, I just checked my motherboard and it says VER: 1.0. Hope that's useful -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Thanks, I'll send an email soon to rkcomputer to see what they can get, if the price is good I might get myself a new mobo
-
Yeah, I know it will push it to the limit so I have these options:
Keep the quad oc'd and get 8gigs of ram.
Get back to default clocks with undervolting it and get a quadro.
Or wait until I get enough money to get an SSD and an OBHD for the current HDD.
Update: the rams are working fine, windows see all the 8gigs but not too much improvement. Maybe a better idea to get an Fx3700m and back to the stock 2.4GHz. -
Is it possible that CoreTemp shows the current temp badly? Because I noticed that in CT the temps are nearly 90*C but in Throttlestop they are around 80*C.
-
Hard to say, but I can tell you both Aida64 and Throttlestop show the exact same temperatures in mi GT627.
-
I believe that Throttlestop shows the correct numbers... but if its true, why coretemp shows much higher temps?
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Coretemp might not know the tjmax of your CPU, that would throw the number off.
-
You're right. I checked it in the morning and it shows the wrong numbers. It shows that I have a Q9100 ES but i have a Q9200. Strange.
Edit: If I'll buy ddr3 1333mhz ram for the system, will it work? I mean the mobo supports only 1066mhz so will it downclock to this speed? Because here the 1333's are cheaper. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
1333mhz should work afaik.
It will downclock. -
So it will work on 1066mhz? If it should I'll buy a pair of them.
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
With most ram you get several frequencies in the SPD table. With CPUz you can see the spd table, can even flash a new SPD with thaiphoon burner or SPDtool.
As long as the 1333mhz ram you have found has a 1066mhz SPD entry, should work just like 1066mhz ram in the GT628. -
Thanks. I think I'll upgrade the ram first, then comes an SSD. And I'll be happy.
-
Today I reinstall the windows and now it hang at the welcome screen for about 12-15 minutes. After that it works perfectly. What the hell is this??
The system is idle at this period, no hdd work, no cpu work. I don't know whats the problem. -
Got the GTX 260m today. Put it in, reinstall nvidia drivers and its working. A bit warmer than the gts, for about 3-5*C. 3Dmark06 and GTAIV benchmarks coming later. Sad, that there's no HDMI...
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Why is there no HDMI?
You know what may help, flashing a different vbios onto your GPU. Something like a 9800m GT vbios might get the HDMI back. Though I'm not sure if you want to risk your new GPU. -
I think that the clevo bios isn't support the hdmi. The card works well in gta, I can max it out and without the backplate the card got only 73*C. And the second problem is that 3Dmark06 crashed with an error message before Canyon Flight. After school I'll make a screenshot... but now I have to go.
Thanks any advice. -
Will the alienware bios work with this card? There is a difference in the clock speeds but...?
GTAIV: 1680x1050 all max except view distance (30 of 100) 45FPS. Max temps: cpu:78*C gpu:77*C, with cooler... I love this card, but ing hdmi -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I think there are 2 types of 260m that work in alienware notebooks. The MXM 2.1 type HE 260m and the MXM 3.0 tybe B 260m.
If you get the bios from the mxm 2.1 type HE alienware 260m, then the clock speeds should match yours (I think). -
hows the performance jump from gts 160m to gtx 260m? btw did you solve your hanging problems with a fresh install of windows? i got the same problem when i first installed windows 7 on my gt628 last year. i used a different installer and it work fine.
-
That was a bad copy of windows. Now I'm using a retail disc so there's no problem at all.
The preformance goes up well: With gts and the quad in gta I need to set the resolution at 1280x800 when I want to use the high settings and now I can set everything to very high/max except the view distance (30) and the fps never goes below 30, usually 45 or more.
Some other games I tested yesterday:
Team Fortress 2: native resolution everything maxed out and get 60-150FPS (before gtx no AA and get 60-90)
Call of Duty 4 and 6: everything maxed no AA always 125+FPS (before gtx 90-125)
Battlefield 2 with ultimate coop-mod: 255 bot + maxed setting get 150+FPS
moral hazard: try to find a working Alienware gtx 260m bios.
Edit.: New driver installed, 3Dmark06 crash is gone. I got 11690 points. [email protected](UV) and the GTX260m@stock. Temps during benchmark: 70*C on both cpu and gpu. (with cooler) Maybe later try with overclocked cpu. -

Unknown vender though, dont know if it's alienware or not. -
thats a 280m and I have a 260m...
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
If you look at that post I gave a link to, you will see there is a zip file attached. Inside that zip file, there is a 260m vbios.
Oh and btw, if you did flash a 280m vbios onto your card, I'm sure it would work fine.
I've flashed a 280m/260m/9800m GTX onto my FX 3700M and the card didn't die. -
Thanks for the input. Im planning to buy a q9200 for my gt628 once i got my pay. Now im thinking of upgrading my gpu too.
+rep to you sir. -
THX moral. I'm just get home... this is exactly what I have now. 62.92.78.00.08. This is the default bios for the Clevo card.
matsjc: these gtx's are very rare. They were only in Clevo M860ETU and Alienware m17x (the first one) in SLi. -
@kirrr ouch haha. anyway ill just stick to my original plan then. but ill sure am going to bite when i see this card on sale. thanks again for the info.
-
wow glad to see fellow GT628 users still alive and kickin'!
why did the original GT628 owner's lounge get closed though? hmmm... :-/
oh btw, hi matsjc!
edit: is it worth getting 8gb of RAM? i'm playing Starcraft 2 and looking at my memory usage it seems that i'm maxing out my memory at 75% usage, the other 25% is reserved. -
Dear GT628 users: Can you check if the GTS is 55nm or 65nm? Originally it should be a 55nm card, but mine doesn't. So the 55nm GTX is actually a bit cooler than my 65nm GTS... Strange.
-
@kirrr
i checked mine in gpu-z and it said 65nm.
@moki
hey may account ka na pala dito. regarding your question, it really depends on your needs. On my laptop, i play sc2 while ym, outlook 2010, firefox and chrome(chrome and FF have multiple tabs opened) are running and my mem usage is around 80-90% but i dont feel any slowdowns whatsoever. I also have 4gb of ram currently installed in my laptop. I would upgrade my ram to 8gb after my cpu upgrade since i use vmware on my laptop alot.
