So I just got my FX 3700m in the mail today.
The notebook turned on fine, got into windows, installed the driver.
GPUz shows that it's running at it's full clocks.
There are no problems so far, idles at 43C.
Update: Running 571/944 on the GPU and with my CPU @3.06ghz I got 12875 3dmarks (06).
Temp maxed out at 80C for the GPU.
Vantage P6016.
Stock clocks 3dmark06 (10334):
http://service.futuremark.com/resultAnalyzer.action?resultId=14579609&resultType=14
________________________________________________________________________________
I didn't run 3dmark yet, just going to take it apart and check that the thermal paste is spread correctly.
I will run undervolt and run 3dmark soon.
FYI I'm running bios version 1.0P.
The screws that come stock with the heatsink didn't fit into the backplate, so I use my own screws (actually screws from a heatsink MexicanSnake sent me, from a dell).
EDIT: screenshot attached![]()
EDIT#2: Just updated my bios to the latest one. Also I undervolted and underclocked from 550/799/1375 @1.03V to 383/301/767 @0.85V for now just while I test it.
I plan on keeping the voltage at 0.85V and I will overclock in windows to find the best clocks @0.85V and I will then flash those clocks.
EDIT#3: Tried a 3dmark06 run with my CPU at 2.4ghz and the 3700m underclocked (383/301/767) gave 6668 3dmarks
This is slightly less than what I got with my 9600m GT, but the 9600m GT was in the 70's while the 3700m maxed out at 57C.
One of the inductors and one ram chip isn't covered by my heatsink (because I modded it to fit a 3870), so I wont increase the clocks today. I need to find some thermal pads and tape.
EDIT#4: I've added some copper onto the vram, I think it will be fine. I'll see what nvidia system tools says is a good overclock![]()
EDIT#5: The gpu doesn't want to run at high clocks with such a low voltage. Right now I have it at 400/384/800 and I got 7626 3dmarks.
Temp maxed out 59C with those clocks.
Looks like I'm going to have to increase the voltage a bit. I want to get over 10K like I did with my 9800m GS.
EDIT#6: I raised the voltage to 0.95V and the vram doesn't want to go higher than 434mhz.
So I did a test a running 460/434 and got 8428 3dmarks.
I think the only thing I can do now is go back to the stock voltage.
BTW the temps with this last run got to 67C.
EDIT#7: Attached vBIOS to this post for anyone who wants it.

nice work, was always curious if the FXs could run on these
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Thanks, I was pretty confident about it working when I paid for it, but then after reading some info on the net, I wasn't so sure.
This morning when the card arrived I was half expecting it to not pass POST.
I'm a little disappointed that lowering the voltage stops me from running the vram @800mhz.
I thought that the voltage wouldn't effect the vram, isn't it supposed to have it's own separate voltage supply?
I remember when I undervolted my 9800m GS, I could still run the vram as high as before.
EDIT: Looks like my battery life hasn't gone down, pretty good. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
So right now I flashed back to the stock vBIOS.
When I run atitool, as soon as I open the 3dview I can hear a whine coming from the notebook. It's disturbing. Is it a sign of something bad?
Should I not try a 3dmark run at full clocks?
EDIT: I ignored the sounds and ran 3dmark with everything stock, got 10414 3dmarks.
Temp maxed out at 76C.
Using the 280m driver (10425 3dmarks).
EDIT#2: After running 3dmark06 and a few games, the noise seems to be gone.
I can max out crysis and get ~20 frames per sec with this GPU, but when I use it on my lap and play crysis it gets to 90C. -
Nice work.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I think I have found the limit, tried to overclock to 575/960, the thing just froze after 10secs of 3dmark06, I lowered the clocks a little, 565/960 froze after 20 secs.
So I think it's better to use a 4850 with this notebook so you have some headroom to overclock.
But if you don't overclock and you like nvidia, I would get a 3700m, they sell on ebay pretty cheap sometimes. Another good thing about the 3700m, you don't need to mod the heatsink. -
).
It's normal (I guess).
BTW, nice results, really really nice to show that even older notebooks are capable of performing great with some mods. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
It's good to know that it's normal.
At least I have 30 days warranty, if it's going to fail it would probably do it within 30 days. -

Great that you were able to take advantage of these cards. Theres generally a well priced supply of them...
With this I wonder if MXM HE fx 2700m cards could work on HP 8530p laptops, or perhaps this fx 3700m with a BIOS mod.
Anyway its true, laptops with the MXM 2.1 interface can go pretty far. There is a seller on Alibaba.com who emailed me their pricelist for MXM cards.
They claimed to make a MXM 2.1 quadro fx 3800 for like 495$.
This would be better than the 285on a core 2 series laptop.
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Ahh its only 455$ actually. see attachment
hmm... maybe I should post this somewhere else too...Attached Files:

-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Nice list, $455 is not too bad for new 3800m.
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
they also sell Dell proprietary cards. I think they manufacture them.
anyway its really amazing what you've done with this laptop.
its just to the point where all of your major components are modified for a really major performance gain, and thats so awesome
I hope to do the same with my m860etu eventually, see if I cant get my q9200 to run at 3ghz... max out the ram and try out one of those fx 3800m -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
It is awesome that this card works, I wouldn't have tried it if it wasn't for the link you gave me
I just checked the vram, it's Qimonda HYB18H1G321AF–11, which is rated for 900mhz.
I tried running my card at 550/900 and I got pretty much the same 3dmark06 score. I can't get much out of the core (~10mhz), it either needs more voltage (which should be easy with a vbios mod) or I need to supply power to the HE tab. -
How much faster will the 3800 perform over the stock 160m? My gpu is dying and I need a good alternative.
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
The 3800m has double the stream processors and higher clocks.
It would be a good upgrade if it worked. But the 3700m is already pushing the limits of my system.
If your system boots with a 3800m, I think you might have to underclock it, or it might even boot up throttled. Or you might have to mod the notebook to supply extra power to the HE tab.
I found a 3700m for $200:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...9235-nvidia-fx-3700m-200-mxm.html#post6589208
I paid $150 for mine but it was used.
EDIT: BTW what's wrong with your GTS 160m? -
I'm not quite sure, MH. I've had this thing for about 6 months and I barely game on it. However, it'll often freeze up and wont boot right until I go into safe mode and reinstall my graphics drivers. I'm not ENTIRELY sure it's the gpu at this point, it could be my ram or possibly my (not so legitimate) copy of windows.
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Did you try using a different graphics driver, I think it's 258.96:
Drivers | drivers for mobile cards and laptops | laptopvideo2go.com -
I did try that driver, I'm now getting horrible artifacts all the time so im going to make a post in the windows 7 forum.
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
For anyone who likes photos, here are some:
That last photo is of the copper I put on the vRam, it was 1mm thick but I got it to about 0.6mm and it still needs to be thinner. I'll work on that a bit later.
I'll try to turn the first post into more of a guide soon.
Right now I'm still trying to figure out how I can overclock to FX 3800M speeds. I'm even thinking about trying to supply power to the HE tab.
EDIT: One last thing, I think I managed to fix the problem with my 3dmark links, ORB was deleting my results because it didn't like the driver I used.
EDIT#2:ORB deleted my result again. I'll try changing to a WHQL driver.

Does anyone know if the fx3700m will work in the gx620 version of the 1651? I know of people having success with the 3870m and the 9800m gs and I thought I remember someone using a 160m gts in the gx620. I would need the gt627 heatsink obviously and for $200 it might be worth a shot to put it in but it would be nice to know if it will work before I drop $280 on the card and heatsink. Thanks for the help.
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Well the bios is the same, so that wont be a problem.
It might work. But I don't know if anyone has tried it. -
Hi all.
I bought the MSI GT628 notebook yesterday..
Everything fine with the original config ,but i have at home the quadro fx3700m Lenovo W700 vga card, and Intel Q9100 Quad processor!
So i want to upgrade this notebook like this gt627..
When i installed the driver, after tried the card with 3dmark06,i got just 6500points, and i saw the clocks aren't running in the stock fully clocks, just the half clocks:gpu:383mhz shader:766mhz ram:300mhz and i saw the card got just 0.85volt..
How can i use the card with fully power?
I have a 120w power supply!
I hope somebody help me..
Regards, -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Did you try updating the bios?
You may also want to try flashing a 280m vbios onto your card:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...rds/510622-wanted-gtx-280m-mxm-2-1-vbios.html
If after troubleshooting, you still can't get it to work, you can just mod the vbios to change the performance of the 3dclocks (I can help you with this if you upload your vbios for me).
You could even try flashing the vbios from the HP version onto your card. -
Thanks for the reply.
I tried to save the vbios from the card via nibitor, and i didn't do this..the program wrote error message...
I will try to update this 280m bios,i hope it will help..
can you write me how did you mod the cooling, because my q9100 a little bit hotty, under 3dmark the temp was 80-83 celsius(Turbo button ON) with ac mx2 thermal paste the original card was 74 celsius..i don't have a notebook cooler the notebook was on the table. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
You can save the vBIOS with GPUz.
I suggest you do that so you have a backup of the original file.
The cooling mod I did wasn't for the 3700m. It was to fit an ati 3870.
It's not a good mod for an nvidia card, it will increase the temps if anything.
What thermal paste do you use?
Do you undervolt the Q9100?
Is your Q9100 an ES version or OEM?
Also (just our of curiosity) did you try this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...unlock-core-2-extreme-multiplier-windows.html -
Ok,i will try with gpu-z!
I am using the artic cooling mx2 thermal paste!
I have a q9100 es version and i didn't do the undervolting!
When i tested,if the turbo button is pressed, the clocks go up to 2640mhz!!!so the turbo button is working ok,but the temps a little bit high..
i don't understand, you changed the original cooling to the hd3870 cooling?
I will save my original vbios...can you write where can i find some photos about the better cooling?I will try to take the little chipset vent onto the gpu cooler. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
MX2 is good paste.
The Q9100 ES version is extreme and can be overclocked over 3.3ghz with throttlestop.
I cut my original heatsink so that I could put an ATI mobility 3870 in my notebook. This makes cooling worse for an nvidia card, but it's the only way to get the 3870 to fit inside the notebook.
I don't really know how to improve the cooling for this notebook.
Sorry.
I use a custom made notebook cooler (made from wood with desktop fans inside).
An overclocked Q9100 + FX 3700m in a 15" notebook will be hot.
If you can improve your cooling, please tell me how, so I can try it -
also, use AS5 on GPU and cpu. it worked pretty well on cutting down temps. You can also try to copper shim the CPU, but thats all about you can do with the 1722. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I forgot that I've put a copper shim on the northbridge.

Hi all, my own fx 3700m thread sorta died out but I made some interesting discoveries...
first of all, @TECHNOS: some have said the lenovo cards do not work as well in other laptops and have bad temp sensors, your experience would definitely confirm this. I would try flashing it with all the other vbioses we have; the .05 vbios, the .10 (both HP) and the stock gtx 280m.
Meanwile... The newer HP vbios, ending in .10 from the 8730w owners lounge? It will pass 3dmark06 with the overclock in my signature.
But its still not stable. You cant really look at too many things in games or the driver will crash and recover.
Also - I don't think this has anything to do with it (although i cant remember if i tried it with the newer vbios), but I can get 1.05v with an fx 3700m vbios. Just use hexview, and change the '64' or something to '69'. It will go to the right place when you click on the voltage editor.
I think '64' is 1.00v cant remember what you will see it on @ 1.03v but '69' is definitely 1.05v. I just copied it from the gtx 280m vbios. dont worry about the yellow 'integrity' indicator (lol) or the fact that nibitor shows blank voltage.
When I overclocked using the .10 vbios, at first i thought i'd temporarily bricked the card. got a black LCD. but i just tried starting again, and it worked fine.
3dmark06 passed with nearly the same score as the card I flashed to a gtx 280m. -
Now i took back the 3700m card to the notebook.
I saved the 3700m bios.
Can you write your email address?
Sometimes i got the blue screen, and i have to do hard reset...I don't know why, because the temps are good, and the card still not working the highest fsb... -
Now i tried to flash your 3700m bios, and after the 280m bios onto my card..
When i wanted the flash,i saw this screen:
Warning:firmware image board id(i think it is the new bios id 9020) does not match adapter board id(9029).
Please press y to confirm override...
I pressed,and after i got :
overriding the board id can be very dangerous....Are you sure you want to continue?
Type yes..i wrote..
And after the nvflash everytime exit..
So i cannot reflash the bios!(280m,and 3700m the same!)
I saved my original 3700m bios with gpu-z..
I hope you can help me,because the gts 160m not so good pair with the q9100.. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
What BIOS is currently on your GPU?
Which version of nvflash are you using?
(By the way, I could give you my email, but I don't check my email as often as I check this site). -
I don't know how can i upload a file here..
the vga card bios version:62.92.5c.00.05 info from gpu-z 0.4.6!
I used 5.93 version of the nvflash! -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Right now do you have the 3700m vBIOS on your GPU or the 280m vBIOS?
-
Yes,now the 3700m vga in my notebook, and it has the original lenovo w700 vga bios, the number is what i wrote in my last post!
Now i am trying to resolve the blue screen problems, because my notebook sometimes turn down after blue screen! The blue screen write the display driver error, and physical memory dump..so i don't know which is the good vga driver for win7 64bit!
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I'm using this driver:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/517818-nvidia-geforce-260-63-beta.html#post6700067
Could it be possible that you have a faulty GPU? -
The display driver error, may be the sign of the overheating. Same as what my Asus G50vt did. When the card reaches 60 degrees, its freezes and sometimes gave me a BSOD or just restart the driver itself and freeze.
-
Yes,maybe the gpu is faulty,but i don't know,i didn't see artifacts,or others..and the temps under than 50 celsius(cooler than the original gts 160m!!)
I tried with this 260.63 driver, and when i wanted to install,i got this message:
The driver cannot find compatible hardware with this driver, the installation will exit... -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
always type 'nvflash -4 -5 -6' to force it.
you can always flash a card its just a matter of if it boots. just remember exactly what you have to type to restore your old bios and have it all ready in case you have to do it without any VGA (black screen) -
I wrote this:
nvflash -4 -5 -6 -A bios.rom
I don't know what happened,but i didn't do it.. -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
what does the '-a' do?
try this HP bios if you want, its overclocked and with increased voltage to 1.05vAttached Files:

Ok i will try it without a..
thanks for the reply! -

Happy to report I took the plunge and bought a fx 3700m for my gx620 based ms-1651, just finished installing it and it is running at full clocks. It was a HP replacement with the .05 bios but it is working great. The only thing I need to find is a back plate from the 9800m gs or gts 160m that came with the gt627. I had to severely hack up the back plate from my 9600m gt to get it to work with the fx 3700m so if anyone knows where I can find the back plate it would be greatly appreciated.
-
Can you send some photos how could you install, the 9600m gt cooling onto the 3700m?
Thanks. -
You will definitely need the gt 627 heatsink, the gx620 heatsink simply isn't large enough or long enough to cover the whole card. The part you will need is the back plate from the 9600m gt. Its stuck on with adhesive so you just have to pry it off with something then cut the backplate up so you just have the screw holes to use on the fx 3700m. This wouldn't be necessary if you can find a backplate from the 9800m gs or the GTS 160m that came in the gt 627 originally as these are the size of the fx 3700m.
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
I have a lot of extra backplates I dont need.
Whats wrong with the one the fx 3700m came with? do you need one thats the same but for thicker screws?
if so i've got several.
Also did I mention I got a stable OC of 600mhz core on the fx 3700m? its a normal one, so you should all be able to do it... I just had to downclock the shaders by 25mhz... -
Yeah my fx3700m was from a HP so it had the smaller screw holes, I would defiantly be interested in taking one of those backplates off your hands, I contacted rkcomputers and MSI and they wouldn't sell me one without buying the whole card.
PM me your paypal info and how much you would want for one and I'll send the money right away, thank you, I didn't think I would be able to find one. -
I bought a 3700m as well (from the atlantatech ebay store). very excited to get this thing up and running!
MSI GT627 (1651), works with FX 3700m (full clocks).
