    - I cannot run 144hz on my MSI GT60 on my Benq XL2411z using a passive DVI to mini displayport adapter.

    - Would 144hz work if I purchased an active USB powered DVI to mini displayport adapter?

    - 120hz options does show up for lower resolutions such as 1024 x 768, but only 60hz is available at 1920 x 1080.

    - Can I run a dual monitor setup using the Benq @ 144hz and the laptop monitor @ 60hz or do I need to disable the laptop screen?

    - If I try to add a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel for the 870m it fails, same with the custommodeapp.exe for the Intel HD 4600.

    - One of the reviews on amazon for http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-...eywords=dual+link+mini+active#customerReviews claim this adapter allowed them to use 120hz on their asus laptop.

    - So if anyone with any experience on this kind of setup can get back to be that'd be great, thanks.

Sorry man, I don't know. All I have tried so far is running 4K at 60hz, in which I need an active mini display port to HDMI 2.0, so I have a different problem here haha. I haven't tried high refreshrates at 1920x1080 res, but Mini display port should have no problems at higher refresh. Most likely the active port is needed.

    - The adapter I linked in the original post works and I got a refurbished/used one.

    - 144hz with using blur reduction and blur busters strobe utility.

    - The only thing is, the very first time i plugged it in and tried to set 144hz in windows, it gave me a white noise/snow screen, but then I just unplugged/replugged it and it's working flawlessly since.

    - And I can leave the laptop monitor on at 60hz for a multiple monitor setup, only reason I mention this is because a youtube video claimed that laptop screen had to be off or the lid closed.

Yeah I actually used a quad monitor setup, using 3 external monitors and the laptop screen so I can confim all 4 work simultaneously. In the case of non 3K version, we can't game on all three monitors simultaneously though.

Glad to hear the cable worked!

So, if I buy a 144hz monitor should it work with my GT60 w/780m? Which cables do I need?

Amazon.com: Cable Matters Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt™ Port Compatible) to DisplayPort Cable in Black 6 Feet - 4K Resolution Ready: Computers & Accessories

I use this cable with my 144hz Asus monitor. It worked with my 780m and now with my 970m. No issues. I can select any refresh rate I want up to 144hz. Not sure what the OP was talking about. All he needed was this $10 cable.

    Edit:

Realized not all monitors have Display Port out connections. That may have been the issue. Make sure you get a monitor with DP out.

Hi, do you mean Display Port IN? The one I am interested says:

    Input Connectors: D-sub + DVI-DL + HDMI x 2 + DP1.2 / headphone jack

Yes the machine can do 144hz output over the displayport. Yes you need an active adapter to convert it to beyond 1080p 60hz but I would seriously consider a native DP monitor as using a converter is always a pain.
