    Hi all,

I'm looking at replacing my aging Asus G73 machine and looking into this model MSI GS70 Stealth Pro-086

My primary use will be development and occasional CAD design. I wish it had more memory as I think 16GB might become limiting in the not too distant future but after carrying the hefty Asus I'm attracted to a lighter aspect. Also, the Asus has great cooling and very quiet. How does this model compare?

I value any opinions you might have.

16GB limiting? You won't need more then 16GB in next 3-4years ... and that's also almost same time as when most of owners is going to change their laptop :)

Well GS70 is quite load during high usage :) but nothing that can't be fixed with a headphones :D

So should I add the price of headsets for everyone in the house to the price of the laptop? :D

The chassis on the GS series are designed for portability with the thin and light design. As mentioned they are not the best at being quiet, at least not while under load. You will run into that with most thin designs that have powerful hardware. The only way to get the quiet you are used to is by having a thicker chassis which allows better air flow.

Just so we have a common definition for "under load", are you talking about games or would that also extend to development and CAD designs? I do tend to have about ten programs running at the same time. One of them being FireFox or Chrome with multiple tabs.

What decibel level are we talking about here?

It would be games and development and CAD, basically any program that would be asking your GPU/CPU to get to work. You can check our our benchmark review for the GS70 Dominator-003 which we put a dB meter on it while benchmarking. Hopefully it helps you get an idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9ph-NoBCw8&list=UUJ9O0vRPsMFk5UtIDimr6hQ, you'll see around 56dB

You can use it to do anything and the noise level is going to be noticeable but acceptable since it is 61dB under full load.
It is like conversation in restaurant, office, background music, or air conditioning unit at 100 ft.

Depending on the load on the GPU, some work may cause the fan spin at full speed and some work may not.
At idle, the noise level is rated at around 25dB which is similar to whispering.

You might want to be careful about picking the red design. It looks awesome and definitely stands out but I wonder if your eyes would get tired at starring something so red for a long period of time, even if its only in your peripheral vision.

Funny that you say that because that's exactly what I was thinking about this morning. Unfortunately, they don't have it in stores around me for a close look. I might go with the black just to be on the safe side.

Looking at the different models of the GS70 line they all seem to utilize mSATA drives. Is that true or did I miss a model that does not?

I have an SSD in my current laptop which is less than a year old that I planning on moving over as a boot device.
