You can get the sager np8652 for a little over 1500 shipped, from exotic pc, it comes with the 980m. That laptop is clevo/sager thinnest 15 inch and weighs just a little over 5 pounds. Of course it's a sager so build quality isn't going to be super high, I have a sager now with the 770m and build quality is lacking, however, they stay very cool. I still think the gs30 is really expensive for what you are getting, for me the price would be right with something better than Iris Pro 5200, as you said, the 960m or something similar.
But yeah, as you said maybe those things are just asking to much from the frame of the laptop. I heard from several people and I think even the OP that this isn't the only laptop that will be able to work with the dock. It would be a shame if MSI doesn't, I mean AW has three even though there release has been terrible. I THINK MSI really has the know how to do this right. I mean as the OP said, there haven't been really any serious problems with the dock.

For those of you that live in states where Amazon doesn't charge tax, its selling for $1800 there right now: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GS30-SHADOW-001-13-3-Inch-Gaming/dp/B00RYZ6INW
Are there price drops elsewhere that Amazon is matching?
EDIT: Realized it is matching a Newegg $100 off coupon: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152710Last edited: Mar 9, 2015 -

The next Meaker machine is here and it is based off the GS30.
This machine has not had much love on the forum and that is a crying shame in my opinion. So I give you the GS30 Titan edition:
13.3" internal 1080p screen + 27" 1440p 144hz ROG swift
4870HQ with iris pro
16GB DDR3 1600mhz
2x 500GB samsung evo 850 SSD (raid 0)
Dock with:
450W 80 plus bronze SFF PSU
Nvidia Titan X 16GB GPU
92mm fan
This will be stage 1 and will go toe to toe with any notebook out there, even the P570WM
Step 2:
1600mhz ram to be swapped with 2133mhz impact.
450W PSU to be replaced with 500W 80 plus gold unit.
This step will help reduce noise and bolster the CPU as much as possible.
Step 3 (water dragon edition)
Get a full cover water block for the titan and go water with a double thick 92mm radiator and dual fans. This should help keep temperatures down and noise.
Step 1 should be in place in a week or two so keep an eye out for some results then -

What card will you put in it? If titan or 980 then the msi is the clear choice.

That could be a nice project, Meaker! Do you have the pictures of the rad you want to install? And how do you plan to setup a WC loop?

That score is crazy!!!!
-
Meaker, did you consider a gold fanless PSU for the buid? It seems like there's a good amount of space to install a rad on the bottom with the fans pulling air outside the case. But with such a setup you'd probably want to go with AIO and custom GPU bracket, of course the full GPU waterblock would be a plus)
In the reviews of the Titan it was said the memory chips can get toasty with an overclock, so it's better to cover them as well
P. S. Nice scores, BTW) -

Nice Meaker! i just saw your score! i wish i had a titan X to play with in a GS30.

PSA: Guys, since I stalk this amazing machine on newegg/amazon on a daily basis, just wanted to let you guys know that Newegg is having a bundle deal where they are including a MSI R9 290 ($300 value) into the $1900 price. Seems like a pretty solid deal.

Keep us posted Meaker!! Looking awesome.

That's as far as I can take it with my wife's system before mods -
I love the combined performance! I suppose SLI has its limits compared to single GPU.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's definitely not going to be 2X performance, more like 1.5X.
-
What made me wonder was the combined score though. My graphics score is very similar to the OC'd Titan X, and both our CPUs are very close in performance, but the single GPU combined score is like 35% faster than mine. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The combined score loves GPU memory bandwidth and the Titan-X has a 384bit bus running at over 8ghz in that benchmark run
Remember due to more uneven frame times SLI has to work harder than a single card to give the same smoothness so it's pretty neck and neck in games (especailly at 1440p).
Of course in games that don't scale well in SLI the titan-X reigns supreme. -
That titan X looks like a great GPU. All in all, it shows that the GS30 is one capable gaming machine when using the external GPU, a nice niche desktop alternative. -

Now I just need to work on it properly and get it benching a nice bit higher

Wow, saw front page ad for this and didn't even know eGPU existed... Often thought how cool that would be. Can't wait to see where technology goes and for other manufacturers to jump on the bandwagon so all laptops can benefit, and not just select brands. This actually changes the entire regime allowing the entire holy trinity of desires in a single laptop - portability, longevity, and performance. Usually you had to sacrifice one (Clevo's are bulky and not as portable, Razer and other thin notebooks overheat and lack longevity, and anything less doesn't perform).
...Anyway, just had to comment after seeing this. Exciting times ahead for sure, but still too early to bite on this new technology for me.

I have all the parts listed, i'll just need to get to ordering them. The dock is currently in the workshop

Here are most of the parts.
I'll be controlling this from the GPU so I got this as above:
and one of these:
So I need a stylish block that wont cover it ala:
Combined with the backplate:
I'm going for the EK pump too:
A nice dense radiator:
For splashes of red and high pressure fans for the dense radiator in push pull:
Also some red fittings as well to go with all the black:
I'll get some standard 10/13 tubing, clear.
Since space is tight I am going for a very small reservoir:
It's not going to happen over night but it's going to look very good when donebe77solo likes this. -

Somewhat similar but unusual mod for an ultrabook/desktop hybrid.

I usually run a modded notebook so not too odd for me to mod the dock as well

Very nice! What are your GPU temps (and ambient) during gameplay/benching?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Benching with the pump at 70 percent and the current single fan set to high was 48C. No gaming results yet, I'll move on to that next.

Here is the proof of concept build (Note the pump/res combo I decided to go for):
I'm getting the fianl functional parts over the next week. Included are some 90 degree and 45 degree rotary fittings to make the tube lengths a lot shorter, 3 PWM controlled fans (1 slim and 1 normal for radiator, 1 for the front), 1 LED light fitting for the resevoir with white dual LED, 1 black sleeved molex splitter (PSU has 2 molex and I need power for the fan splitter, pump and LEDs).
I've also got the red backplate for the GPU on order -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well it's all in the box itself now after the liberal use of adapters to get the angles, i'll need to do some serious cable management to get it all looking nice.
The final modification is to the front panel to get the intake fan mounted and to allow space for the resevoir.
I will also be placing a socket on the motherboard for the bios so I can program the chip and then place it back in (the chip is hardware and software locked). -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well here you go, still got to do the front and sort the lighting out but that's about it
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There we go, that should do for every day gaming

Here is some testing going on -

Custom lighting installed
Now just to adjust the opening and get something for the front -
Currently the GS30 is the only MSI laptop that can be docked to the gaming dock.
Will MSI keep this line? And launch future models with new processors and technology that can use the gaming dock?
I am thinking about pulling the trigger on one and use a Sapphire 290X 8gb on the dock.
But I don't want to get a dead end system where I will be able to upgrade the GPU, but then in time, the rest of the system will fade to obsolete status.
Granted the GPU must be upgraded like 3 times more frequently than the CPU, ram and storage, but still...
Cheers!
