I'll post details after I've done the measurements and tested it. They looked to have changed some of the wiring colours.

If anyone else is getting ideas from this please ensure you have a good fundamental knowledge of electrics as there is risk of the battery exploding if you are careless.

    1. It's a little fiddly but with the right BIOS.
    2. I use a titan-x, at stock it has no issues with the stock PSU. The Z would require a PSU replacement.

10A bios worked for me. Laptop only uses dGPU when you set the screens to "extend" mode and not "duplicate"

Been enjoying the GS30 laptop itself for awhile. Decided to pull the graphics card from my desktop to put in the dock, and low and behold, there is a "warranty sticker, void if tampered" over one of the screws needed to remove the faceplate. Am I missing something here? Isn't the setup sold for me to put my own card in? Did everyone else have that on their dock faceplate screw?

MSI puts the sticker just as a warning. If you don't damage your system while upgrading anything, then your warranty should be fine. Feel free to PM our MSI representatives if you must, or maybe resellers here can help you there, but I am fairly sure the warranty sticker is just more like politics and not actually enforced, unless you tear and damage your devices yourself.

Warranty sticker is like a temper sticker to show MSI personnel whether the card has been modified or not, so if warranty sticker is broken and there are physical damages on the card then they can refuse warranty service.
Also, if the card breaks down in the future, be sure to remount its cooling fan & heatsink back before you return it back to them otherwise they will not honor warranty.

Sounds like you are talking about a graphics card? A sticker there I would totally understand, but not over the screws that let me access the inside of the GamingDock (and put a graphics card inside it, which it is designed to accept). Nevertheless, with all the responses I am just going to go ahead and remove the sticker. Hopefully that doesn't fully compromise my warranty as I really would not want to have to spend out of pocket to fix any problems that may come up.

I did have a look at the battery, the GS40 battery would fit length and width wise easily, however it is 50% thicker.

I updated to the 10A bios after seeing that the laptop monitor could not be used when docked on the BIOS that was factory installed, which was a lot older. After the update, the internal screen still does not turn on when docked. I have a 760 GTX in there at the moment, and updated both GeForce and Iris Pro drivers. Any ideas? How can I confirm Optimus is installed or the hardware is detected as compatible?

Edit: In device manager, the Iris Pro has a yellow exclamation triangle next to it.

Try installing the Iris Pro driver that's on the MSI GS 30 page.

Tried that even though it's from January. No luck, and I even tried installing the GeForce driver from the page too, and no results either.

    Hi all,
Did anybody test the fan noise? My current MSI gaming laptop is pretty noisy.
    Thanks for your answer.

The noise level can be higher than typical preference of users, but since the system is compact plus it is a gaming system therefore this is a sacrifice.

After doing some troubleshooting, I have found two workarounds (both quite similar). One is to plug the monitor's HDMI into the laptop HDMI port to boot the system, THEN when in Windows, switch the cable to the graphics card. The second is to remove the monitor HDMI completely, until loaded into Windows, then connect to the card. In both cases, the laptop internal display works, driven by the Iris Pro, while the external monitor is plugged into the GTX 760.

When plugged directly into the card and then the dock is turned on, the internal display never works, and the IGP always has the yellow caution triangle in Device Manager. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? It seems like if the IGP isn't initially used at startup, it is disabled and never reactivated (evidenced by the lack of the Intel Iris Pro Control Panel option when I right click the desktop - which is visible when I use the above two methods). The NVIDIA Control Panel always is an option when I right click desktop.

Try changing boot mode to UEFI with CSM in bios. I can run the internal(with 980Ti) only with this setting.

THAT DID IT! Thank you so much! Curious though why it would require a legacy BIOS mode.

    Well done seamon.

    To inversion,
Your graphics card does not have UEFI BIOS but Legacy BIOS that's why.

Now that the new dock has been shown off, upgrading to GS40 doesn't make sense I guess.

Can you please tell me where this new dock was announced? I thought development on the MSI GS30 product line had ceased. The slim dock was shown last year but nothing else was heard. Please post any links with further information.
    thanks!

    The link:

The 3:45 mark is where the interesting stuff begins.

Thats awesome news but a little confusing as well. I think they showed the slim dock they had from last year since it still used GS30's proprietary connector and did not seem to have any place for the 'superport' found in the GS40.

Or they might release a special dockable version of the gs40 as well. I'm glad they are keeping this dock around as it allows the full potential of the gpu to be utilized, something we will need in the upcoming generation of GPUs and higher resolutions as well as VR.

They are going to release a GS40 with GTX 960M with the PCIe connector as the TB3 will bottleneck desktops 970s and above.

I've redesigned things a bit, that's an EK SP120 radiator with a single fan and a Noctua 92mm fan on the side:

With the front 120mm it's going for maximum breathing space and airflow.

    Hi Kevin,
That link above is not working. Please let us know where we can get 10A? Do you know where can we find the change-logs for all these BIOS versions? MSI.com shows latest version below. What is the difference between 10A vs 10B vs E13F1IMS.110?

What is "Remove DGPU Dynamic Power Control"? and is that feature available in 10A or 10B or a later modded version?

    Type BIOS Title BIOS
    Language English Release Date 2015-11-25
Version E13F1IMS.110 File Size 3.39 MB
    File Download
Description Remove DGPU Dynamic Power Control.

Is it possible to have the 980ti card output to the GS30 laptop's screen? Is there a FAQ for GS30 Shadow Owners?

Thanks so much for all your great efforts.

    Hi Meaker,
Thanks so much for your useful info.
I recently bought a used GS30. Even only at 20% CPU usage, from 55 C (idle) it quickly rises to 90 C (maximum allowable) and starts to throttle down to a much lower speed. Do you know why that is? What is yours and others temperature at different CPU loads? Your 3D Mark Physics scores are really high. How did you achieve that? We appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Dn

I undervolt even when overclocked by around 50mv, I use liquid metal thermal compound which is excellent for the low pressure contact heatsink (just be really careful if you use it) and the unlocked BIOS (Only flashable by physically removing the chip) allows me to set a higher throttle point temperature wise and slightly higher power limits.

Thanks Meaker. What was your temp at stock before and at what CPU load before it throttles? If mine reaches 90 C at 20% load, how much improve would repasting with Arctic Silver 5?
    Thanks.

I would temperature throttle in XTU if I ran at stock voltage, now it's dictated by power limits and cooling is no longer the limiting factor.

ASV is trash for low pressure contact heatsinks AFAIK. I won't be surprised if you get worse temps than stock.

    1. YES
    2. 10b I have found the best, download it, put it on a USB stick and flash it via the BIOS option.
    3. The only major difference is between Haswell and Broadwell versions but the bios files should be usable on either as far as I can tell.

    Yes with an upgraded PSU.

Sorry, but which settings do you mean? In bios? There's so many different places to look for options (Dragon gaming, SCM, windows control panel, windows 8 settings) that it's way more convoluted than I am used to,

Also, I'm idling around 50C-60C (a huge range, yes), does this seem a bit hot? I would like to repaste since it seems like it will help, but I read earlier in this thread that AS5 (which is what I have on hand) is bad for the type of heatsink in the gs30? What kind should i buy?

I am having a hard time understanding the fan profile. I use the MSI program Silent Option, and with the same profile there, the fan will stay off up till 58C sometimes, while other times it will turn on to ~3k RPM around 50C (which is idle for me).

Meant to edit the last post but accidentally reposted.

50 C wouldn't be so bad, but over that and nearer to 60 C is definitely too hot for idle. Ideally, you want to be in the 40s C. If you repaste, completely clean the old compound and go with something like IC Diamond or Gelid GC Extreme (or you can go with one of the more extreme TIMs, like Thermal Grizzly's Kryonaut, or Coollaboratory's Liquid Ultra).
