gp60 has better i7 haswell, I agree the ge60 is a much better gaming rig for the small price difference. but if you don't play many games the gp60 seems like a better choice to me.

I would agree with this is as well.
I prioritized the powerful CPU over the GPU and then considered cost, which led me to the GP60.
For those who money is tight (like me) the GP60 is a excellent alternative for less.
I haven't regretted the purchase not one bit.

In absolutley every photo I've seen, there seem to be orange lights behind 5 of the 6 buttons at the top of the machine... how do I turn those on?

    Hi everyone,

I am expecting my GP60 tomorrow, will get back to you about first impressions. Just a quick question though, has anyone actually used the msata connectors beneath the wifi card with an ssd to see if they are actually working? I have read that they are not active and MSI FAQ says that the GP60/70 do not have msata:

    MSI USA

    Thanks for your help

So there are two slots there, one is occupied by the wifi card and is supposingly a PCI Express Mini Card slot and the one beneath it is just one (not two) msata connection? If so, they might look alike but are not the same, the PCI Express Mini Card slot cannot be used for an msata ssd ( Serial ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Can someone that has used the lower msata slot with an ssd verify this?

So there are still two questions I have in this thread that are outstanding... NO ONE has answered them (one dates back to September!)
Someone mentioned his GP60 came with a "Windows 7" keyboard. How does the Win 7 kb differ from the Win 8 kb?
Also, I mentioned, that in 99.9999% of photos, there are orange LED's behind the buttons at the top (except the power which is orange/blue). Does anyone know how to get those lights to light up?

There's only 1 connector there, but being a Mini PCIe slot it can sustain both PCIe & USB signal.
However, depending by design, this slot may only possess PCIe signal without USB signal.

I finally received by GP60. Overall good impressions, given the price. Did not come with any operating system, I did a fresh install if Windows 7 64bit and used the drivers they had online. Comments/problems:

    1. The configuration of my laptop was similar to the pics posted by Allan, meaning there was an extra connection beneath the wifi card - but there was no way to fit an msata ssd drive there anyways, mainly because of the capacitor. It wouldn't have worked probably.

    2. Problem: The orange light stays always on, meaning that it uses nvidia all the time. I can't get it to work with the intel vga, although all drivers are installed and everything seems fine in device manager. The change should happen automatically right? Any ideas how to fix this?

    3. Problem: The 5 out of 6 buttons at the top never light orange, as others have already mentioned. No idea why...

    4. Problem: The G button does not work, opens a window to custom define its function.

    5. The bios version it came with is E16GDIMS.30B, there are newer versions online but I can't for the life of me understand which version I should update to. They list different versions with respect to the operating system, since when does the OS have anything to do with the BIOS version?

I'd appreciate any advice I can get.

    This I can answer, somewhat.
    1. Right click on the desktop
    2. Left click on nVidia Control Panel
    3. Left click Manage 3D Settings
    4. Left click Global Settings (if it's not there)
    5. Select "Auto Select" or "Integrated Graphics"
    6. Click Apply
    7. Close nVidia window, log out and back in to Windows.

This too is a simple fix. Follow to the path of "C:\Program Files (x86)\SCM\SCM.exe" and use that.
(when you press the button from then on, the screen below should pop up.)

Hi Allan and thanks for your reply. Unfortunately nothing worked.

    1. Went there, but it was already on auto. I even tried setting it only to intel, applied and rebooted, but nothing changed, everything is orange...

    2. I tried what you said but it didn't work - but that is because the SCM does not work. When I execute it nothing happens. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, again nothing, Curiously, the other buttons work, even though they are not illuminated.

So I am looking at the MSI GP60 2OD-052. I started my laptop search about a week or 2 ago and making sure I get what I really want. Speakers were a top priority, and the MSI GP60 I hear has some of the best. The video card isn't what it could be, but I will be playing smaller games (league of legends, minecraft, scrolls, baldur's gate 1 and 2 enhanced editions) so I don't think that the smaller video card will hurt me too much. I will also be travelling a lot, so having the smaller portable laptop (compared to the 17 inch laptops) was priority as well.

Finally my questions are for mostly people that might own the GP60 2OD-052 or just a version of the GP60 or GP70:

    1. How well is the computer built? Does it feel flimsy or fairly solid?

    2. How good are the speakers? Everything I have read says they are good, but most of what I read is from MSI themselves. I can't really find a dedicated review.

    3. Would you recommend this laptop to anybody else?

    4. I was just going to buy it stock, but is there anything I should think about upgrading, like the HDD, cooling system, or anything else you can think of?

    Thank you for your time

    1. It's actually just a single connector even it looks like as if it has two.
    2. The Optimus technology will determine if the nVidia GPU should be turned on or not, but your primary graphics will always be Intel HD Graphics. If you want to turn off nVidia GPU completely then you can go to Device Manager and disable it under display adapters.
    3. Not all buttons have backlit since this is a value product line.
    4. G button should bring up the screen as Allen posted, check and see if your SCM (System Control Manager) is present or not.
Did you modify any of your system software?
    5. You can update to 30D, see below link.

    1. OK, I was also not very optimistic about it, hence i bought a Samsung Evo ssd instead.

    2. I know that, however isn't it supposed to interchange between blue and orange colors when changing from intel to nvidia, respectively? It actually did in the beginning, just after I had installed Win7 64bit. Somewhere along the time I was installing the drivers, this stopped and the color stayed orange ever since. I have even tried to disable nvidia from device manager or completely uninstall it, still orange. I am not sure intel is being used at all.

    3. Thanks, I can live with no backlit as long as it is not supposed to be there.

    4. That's the problem, i have installed/uninstalled SCM twice but SCM.exe does not do anything when I execute it. Hence, the G button does not work also.

    5. Are you sure about this version? It is listed under Win8.1 and I have Win7-64b installed.

Thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

    1: Ok. That's cool
2: Yeah, mine does work, but it takes a few seconds for the light to change (1-2 max)
3: Why on 99.99999999% of photos, do all the buttons have backlights? That would be called "false advertisement" and in Canada, could be illegal.
4: I went and found a different version of SCM - it works too... mine is version 10.013.01483, released 2013/4/17
5: What benefits do I have of updating, if all things are 'hunky dory' as they are?

Hi everyone, I have a msi gp 60 for a while now, but it came with windows 8

I've noticed that I could leave my laptop on overnight, and when I wake up, it's fans is cold, almost silent with laptop working fine.

However, I dislike windows 8 and reformatted things to windows 7

In the same conditions as above, leaving the laptop on overnight causes the fan to speed up, and I've noticed my laptop is much hotter then before.

I've installed all the drivers and utilites in the msi drivers ( minus super charger) so does anyone know why my laptop's heating up after the reformat?

in HWMonitor, my laptop's idle temps are 60 to 72 degrees with just downloading.. it should be colder then that, I feel.

edit: found out what my problem was. it turns out in reformatting it, i somehow turned off intel smartstep technology in the bios, turning it back on fixes this, yay.

I believe you should right click on the icon in the system tray, and go to its control panel to configure it.

Hi guys, I'm new here at notebookreview. and I have my GP60 for almost a week now. I've already upgraded to Windows 8.1 but is having some issues in booting up. How long does it take for your gp60 to boot up? Mine takes roughly 45secs. to a minute to completely boot up. Is that normal? or should I bring it back to MSI? btw, I've already disabled the startup items that I don't need. TIA. :)

With an Intel 530 series, I boot from cold is ~12-15 seconds (to password screen).
From clicking "Restart" on the start menu to password is ~26-28 seconds.

Hardware functions will still work without SCM installed onto the system because it's just GUI stuff.
You can simply test out the function keys.

Happy New year to you to. Just a few more questions, my monitor on/off and Eject button above the keyboard are not functioning at present. I have installed the Intel chipset driver from the MSI website and its definitely Win 7 version. Will not having SCM installed prevent these buttons from functioning? Thanks so much for the replies :)

It's a function with SCM but not S-Bar.

Ok but how can i get SCM to install and work with my specific model of laptop (MSI GP60) please? I have showed you what i had installed and i had tried installing SCM for Win 7 and Win 8 and Win 8 versions seemed to be more useful than Win 7 version funny enough as it install and creates a shortcut onto my desktop but Win 7 version just appears in my processes in task manager for display. This is so frustrating! Im unable to use my notebook to its full potential.

i dont mean to shout or get cross, im just irritated :)

    Hello guys!

I just bought a GP60 out of my Christmas Bonus and it was really worth it! My only gripe is regarding dual monitors

I have plugged it plugged on the VGA port and it seems it uses the onboard video card which sucks. The images aren't sharp enough. But on the laptop monitor it displays just fine. Is there a way we can use the dedicated GT740M for our displays?

VGA port comes from the primary display which is Intel HD graphics, and digital out (HDMI) is managed by nVidia graphics.

SLOW? With a Momentus XT Hybrid Drive, windows 8 would take 30-50 seconds to get to the password screen.
12-15 seconds is fast. What do you youngsters want now a days? Instant on/off like your phones? :p

    Hi all,

I'm the owner of a GP60 for 1,5 month now, and I'm wondering if it's just me or not: is the Wi-Fi / Bluetooth card (Realtek 8723AE) such a crappy card or is it my Bluetooth mouse, Microsoft Sculpt Comfort?
I can connect it but it becomes laggy after some time. And if the wifi drops, the Bluetooth seems to drop as well and the mouse is 'lost'. I have to remove it and add it again, and sometimes the laptop demands a password for the mouse. I don't have a password for the mouse...
I tried to update the drivers but Realtek doesn't have a single bit of information about the card on their website.
I've gone through all power saving options I could think of, but now I'm stuck and using a cabled mouse. That's a shame, I think.

    Ideas anyone?

Sorry, I stand corrected, mixed with the GT series.
    Thank you!
