Hi everyone, I'm from Clevo subforum and I think I'm gonna move here. :)

I'm upgrading my old loved Clevo P170HM...
    I want a 17" gaming laptop with:
    • The 120Hz 5ms 94% NTSC 1080p
    • 1080p is fine for me
    • GTX 1070
    • Good gaming keyboard
    • That keyboard doesn't overheat, especially near WASD
    • Run current games smooth
    • I don't want to overclock neither score makers
    • I want best smooth gaming possible within my budget
My budget is around U$2200, with less being good and more being ok if its really worth it.

I was going to buy the Clevo P775DM3 but Phoenix convinced me to take a look at the MSIs, mainly because of the better keyboard and screen.

    I'm between the GE72VR and the GT73VR
    1 .Clevo P775DM3 with Delided i5 7600K + CLLU / GTX1070 / 120Hz 5ms 1440p bad color gamut / 1.61" thick / Clevo keyboard / Best repairability = U$ 2350
    2 .MSI GT73 with i7 6820HK + ICD / GTX1080 / 1.76" thick / Good keyboard / Good cooling = U$ 2490
    3 .MSI GT73 with i7 7820HK + ICD / GTX1070 / 1.76" thick / Good keyboard / Good cooling = U$ 2285
    4 .MSI GT73 with i7 6820HK + ICD / GTX1070 / 1.76" thick / Good keyboard / Good cooling = U$ 2240
    5. MSI GE72 with i7 7700HQ + ICD / GTX1070 / 1.14" thick / Good keyboard / Good cooling??? = U$ 2000

I never owned a MSI before, so I need your help. What you guys think? Feel free to give other suggestions also.

If you will only be gaming at 1080p I would go for the 7820/1070, I have the 6820 with the 1070 and I love it.

Why go back to BGA bro?

    I'd go with P775DM3 with GTX 1070 + i7-7700K + 3K QHD 120Hz w/GSYNC seems to be the sweet spot.

It's more expensive, worse screen, worse keyboard, worse cooling, and need tweaking to not throttle. Also as I said I don't want an overclock enthusiast laptop.
I just want ot open the box and game.

Oh okay, I'd go with this: MSI GT73 with i7 6820HK + ICD / GTX1080 seems to be the best option atm, second is MSI GT73 with i7 7820HK + ICD / GTX1070

I decided to get exactly that one, I abdicated some extras to go for the best graphics. Almost U$500 more expensive though.

You wouldn't regret it bro, as you can see the MSI GT73VR is the best laptop you can get atm, unless you're aiming for SLI but budget speaks.

How is the overclocking headroom on the GT73VR? Can you up the clocks all the way (As limited without a VBios change)

:O I'm reading it right now. Is this real deal? Generalized problem?

Are you having those issues @Phoenix ? Do you play a lot of games?

Well, people on that MSI thread said that in benchmark nothing crashes, only in games.
And I'm surprised how much people are complaining about the same problem. Now, I'm scared. :(

I don't know if its game specif, because some had problems in one game that others didn't and vice versa.

Apparently it's only in the GTX1070 model. But one guy is having the same problem in GTX1080 SLI.

They said game crash randomly while playing. There are some videos showing it.

Well, I'm still a little afraid.
But Donald from HIDevolution told me every laptop they sell is extensively tested with various softwares and they actually leave some online gaming playing by hours to make sure nothing is wrong.
    :D

Also noticed that all these people whom have issues bought from newegg or amazon....

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/msi-gt72vr-6re-constant-crashes-4401-nvlkmdm.798922/

I can tell you right now, you have no idea the frustration I felt for 2 days. Saturday was brutal as I tested Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite, Bioshock even disappeared from my games on Steam. I had to redownload it. It was still there for whatever reason, Steam seemed to have lost as it only took 4 seconds to re-download lol. It just wasn't part of my installed games.

If that wasn't bad enough, I had to hard reboot so many times, Windows 10 blocked me from using my pin, I had to use my password to log on. It wasn't til I flashed my vbios did my laptop work again. I do think the newer 7700 and 1080 were mostly fine but if you got the one with the wrong vbios, you're in for a long night.

never buy from oldegg or Amazon or eBay even if it was for free!

    Be smart...be like Phoenix...

my laptop works perfectly. Don't let user errors or comments regarding other laptop models from the same brand (ie. MSI) scare you off.

You can have DOA easily from untested boxes, even if it's a fully tested unit because sometimes the shipping process can be too rough for it.

    1. I had an issue very similar to this with my MSI GT73vr 6re Titan (i7 6820hk, gtx 1070). Screen flickering, game crashing, even a few blue screens at first. I had quite a few drivers out of date when i bought it too so the audio was totally messed up. After updating drivers the audio was fixed and the blue screens stopped but there was still screen flickers/crashes when rendering graphics in game after a period of time (within 5min). There appeared to be some sort of memory leak occurring as the MSI Dragon Center would crash and revert to a previous or more "stable" state, usually meaning it would revert to using the integrated gpu dramatically reducing frame-rate if the game didn't just crash entirely. Using task manager to close the dragon center completely and reopen it didn't seem to fix the frame-rate, only a fresh restart really did the trick. The error message said something about not enough memory and I noticed my ssd was filling up because of this I had to clean out my drive daily due to the system memory error dump files. A surprising temporary fix I found was twitch of all things. I found that running a live stream in the background even muted and with "mobile" quality settings stopped the dragon center and games from crashing. I still don't understand why that is, but it didn't work with youtube or rewatching old streams from twitch. Of course having to do this was still using the cpu and reducing performance even if only by a margin, so after 3 months I managed to set aside the time to send into the manufacturer to get it looked at. Information was a little vague as it was passed on second hand, but I believe they reinstalled the bios and reset the laptop to factory conditions before reinstalling all of their drivers. They did not mention what the cause of the problem was but I haven't had issues since. I wasn't charged for anything and the also cleaned the fans which was nice little gesture, even though they did take 3 1/2 weeks.

for fan speeds I typically use 2/3 basic fan settings when I'm not gaming as it is quiet enough not to be noticed while keeping temperatures in the low 30's while watching videos and doing most other things. When gaming I use advanced settings as I find that the basic settings and auto do not keep things quite cool enough (60c+)and you can feel the heat through the keyboard which can lead to sweaty hands. The cooler boost fan is way too loud and can be heard when wearing a headset along with the vibration you can feel through the keyboard which is distracting. I typically set the advanced fan settings to both the same for cpu and gpu at 30%, 50%, 80% fan speed after that just set to max. It's audible at about 400rpm faster than basic but it isn't distracting and doesn't vibrates the keyboard, also it's hard to hear when using a headset. This typically keeps games like csgo in the low 40's or sometimes high 30's if you're just sitting in spawn. Other more intensive games like gta v get a little hotter, with sometimes low 50's so on a warmer day I might up the fan speed settings by 10% if I'm using the keyboard and/or a headset.
