Ya you would have to use the ODD to get another standard SATA in there. Right now on amazon the 850 EVO 500GB is $2 difference between the 2.5" and m.2 form factor (m.2 $2 more) i'd say that's typically the best way to go if possible.

You don't want to convert the ODD to HDD because it only runs on SATA II (3.0Gpbs).
It's still the best option just to go with the right upgrade, which is M.2 SSD.

I did buy the Hard Drive caddy for replacing the ODD with a SSD. However, I also installed a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD (got it for $135) and switched it to be my primary bootable disk.
I then replaced the 1TB HDD that came with the laptop with a 960GB Sandisk Ultra II SSD (got it for $170).

So, why replace the ODD with a SSD using a SSD caddy, you ask? Because, I don't use the ODD ever (have an external one, in case I need to). So, going to pop in another 960GB SSD in there and sell the 1TB HDD.

Like others have said, better to boot off from the M.2 SSD. My laptop now boots under 5 seconds. Just make sure you get the right type of M.2 SSD (I got a B+M keyed M.2 which works with my GE72 Apache Pro).
