Looks like an ok system, if a bit generic, with the only real problem being 1366 x 768 on a 16'' screen.

Nice book, if purely for gaming this will perform fine, regardless of res on that screen, the combo boasts alot of power there, and the machine looks quite nice.

Seems good, but it's too big for what I'm looking for. Switchable graphics is nice, but it goes best with portability.

I agree with the entertainment part for sure, although i'd say its in the high end of entertainment and low end of gaming (Mainly due to that lovely low res lol.)

For $1000 there are no features that really jump out at all. If you want to game it'll be worth it for spend $100 and change and get a GX640.

If the price for the GE600 is 949 then the GX640 is 1189.99 Btw these prices are in canadian currency, an NCIX employee assured me that those prices are set
For a 240$ difference, you get a better GPU but a less subtle look (the red line is a deal breaker for me)

Yeah the red line looks funny at first, but I bet you get used to it quickly. $240 more for a much better DDR5 card and a good screen res, as well as larger standard HDD... it seems like they are trying to market to a niche group (students).

fair enough, the gx640 is less subtle than teh GE600 but it's still better than the flashiness of an alienware or having to explain what the "ROG" on your Asus stands for.

You could go sager but those things have no battery life which is bad for work

For that price, should have been able to get a i5-520...

Like everyone has said, looks are pretty dull... Acer and Gateway have something really good with nearly equal specs (ATi 5650) for as low as $750 CND... So this is disappointing, however should see the switchable graphics performance.

GX640 is back to haunt me!

    GE600 Vs. GX640
    $979.99USD | 1189.99
    1366x768 | 1680x1050
    HD5730 | HD5850
    320GB | 500GB
    6-cell | 9-cell
    switchable GPU | nope =/

Ignorantly, I previously thought the only difference between the two were gpu/size/color but wow there's actually a lot of difference!

    using RKcomputers prices, it's $210

I know a lot of people complain about 768 resolution but how much better(worse) is the 1050 ?

i guess if the benefits outweigh the costs i'll just get the GX640 and do something about the red trim :D

Btw anyone know why there is a | \ button on the left of the spacebar o_O

    I do too.
The GPU is not that bad and can game but If it's cheap enough it's a good llittle laptop to hold you over until the new mobile FERMI cards are out and new the line of INTEL CPU's which should be coming out early next year.
It's not a bad alternative but I would prefer the GX640 for sure.

Lots of things can change until next year and Nvidia has to make there move sooner than later. They are being crushed by the top of the line ATI cards so I'm hoping that all the problems that plague the desktop FERMI cards can be resolved with the mobile ones.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I really think they will be out by Q1 of next year.

This notebook is now available at newegg for 900btw. Has shipping, tax, and the governator's fee. Lets see, that comes out to $1016.32 if you're shipping to somewhere in California (899.99x1.0975tax)+16governator fee +14.83 UPS-ground shippng. Not bad actually, and the notebook looks really good. It looks better than the N61 cosmetically. Its only shortfall is the i5 vs N61's i7 and usb 3.0, right?

bagienny's purepc.pl review helped me decide on the ge 600 after newegg listed it for us $899 (should be here 04/27). most of my gaming is on my desktop, and i wanted a "supplemental" gaming laptop for the back yard or on the road. the design is also suitable for work, and the components should be ample for work/office programs for a long time.

the asus n61jq was another strong contender, but if i were to be in the $1100-1200 price range, i would have gone with the gx640.

the acer 7740g had looked pretty good for a while, but it has too many reported problems on this site and elsewhere.

So is it confirmed yet if this one has switchable graphics? Cuz if it does, I might consider this one over the GX640.
