    Hi,
I've had my msi ge60-2oe for about a year now and just recently the fan started acting strange, it's turning on and off every 5 seconds and the cooler boost led is also on the whole time but very dim. Starting the cooler for some time and turning it off again has no effect.

    What should i do?

Would you download RWEverything and post a screen shot of the EC (Embedded Controller).

Have you tried to clean the fan? If you didn't clean the fan for a year that is a possible reason for the fan to start on and off.

I would try what Zar has recommended since it's very likely the heatsink/vent are somewhat blocked/clogged by dust.
Use compressed air to clean through and see if it helps to resolve the issue.

Since the cooler boost is dimly on when it should be off I would have guessed either EC screwed or some contamination with the circuit such as liquid spill or an insect doing it's business where it shouldn't. Unless MSI have a built-in blockage sensor which dimly illuminates the cooler boost LED, that would be cool.

Hey Dufus, you've been pretty good with these EC hacks too like Svet, good work!

Never had a reason to hack the embedded controller but it does have some useful registers and some are not too hard to interpret.

For instance the fan control with my GE60 2OE

There are 2 fan profiles, one for the CPU and one for the dGPU, only one fan on the GE60 so highest speed wins.

These are default values and as you can see from the data that CPU temp reading is currently 41C while dGPU is 0 (switched off by switchable graphics).

If the CPU reaches 79C the fan speed will increase to 75%, hysteresis means speed will drop down when temperature cools 11C below that. If temperature continues to rise then at 85C the fan will run at 100% and if it hits 100C an emergency shutdown will be initiated, 102C for the dGPU.

Remove the battery and psu and try an ec reset.
