Do the MSI Eco modes actually do anything?

I've got the MSI GX740 with those and I can't see any difference in them, expect the darker screen while in movie and power-save mode...

Does the gaming mode for example actually do something? I can't really see any difference :/

Hmm depending what screen the 740 has, when my 1722/725/6555 lowers its brightness, i get conciderably more battery life, enough to watch full movies off the cell alone.

Well yeah, the battery saving thing really does make the life more longer. But they all just drop the screens brightness and the gaming mode does nothing that can be seen...

Here is what MSI's site says: "The GX740 takes advantage of the ECO Engine power management system, allowing users to select from five different usage scenarios—text processing, gaming, movie viewing, presentations, and Turbo Battery modes—and instantly obtain optimized settings for screen brightness and sleep, automatic system sleep activation, and processor performance."

But is there really any difference between Normal and Gaming mode, the FPS'ses in games are the exactly same. Has someone found out does it really do something?

The Gaming mode keeps the processor at its maximum clocks, even when the computer is idling, that means, doing nothing. This can prevent the cpu to downclock in certain situations when it shouldn't. I use it for Photoshop for example.

So, while gaming I should actually use the gaming mode?

I used it couple times when I bought the laptop and after that, haven't bothered to.

I never use the ecomode, gaming mode only first few weeks after buying it, the gaming mode always reset the settings when you disable it,

Well, while gaming I don't think the processor is gonna downclock, but you never know, just in case... is a way of guaranteeing that you're gonna have the maximum fps your computer can offer in any circunstance.

Gaming mode is useless , it does jack ... just use any monitoring software and see for yourself if it makes any difference. The only mode that seems to work is the turbo battery

Sorry for what ? Because i think it's a gimmick and don't believe in all that ? Been using my msi notebook for more than 2yrs and not once i came across some actual facts that it actually does work.

Prove me wrong. Switch it on at idle and have a look at cpuz and gpuz ..

Sorry because it doesn't work on your laptop.
One thing is if it's useful or not, and other different thing is if it works or not.
When I go to Gaming mode in idle, processor keeps at its maximum clocks, doesn't matter what I do, it stays there. As soon as I disable it, it underclocks again. What it's true is that the cpu will probably not underclock while gaming, so even though it's named "Gaming", it's not that useful when gaming, but it is for some other tasks. It only affects to the cpu btw.

That means it doesn't work on all machine except yours then ...
By the way , are you talking about Turbo or gaming mode ? Turbo does OC the CPU but not Gaming Mode .. Just post some screenie to back what your saying otherwise your words meant nothing.

No I'm not talking about the Turbo button. There you go.

    Gaming

    Eco Off

This works with the original Q9000 and also with the current QX9200.

I don't think I'm the only one with this feature working, that's just how it's supposed to be.

ECO messes up with the Windows power management and sets one of the 5 already preset modes. In each different mode it sets different min and max CPU usage (Power management -> advanced), different screen brightness, ect. It changes almost everything that windows allows you to change. In my case I don't find it useful, but it works. I made my own power plans and they responds much better. With my current power saver mode I've been able to squeeze the battery at max and giving another 15-20 min more than power saver.

Why use the ECO mode when you have the turbo botton?? You get the fastest CPUspeed by using turbo..
