I am looking for a new laptop to bring to college this fall, and I was looking at MSI notebooks.

I am planning on using it for pretty much everything, writing papers, watching movies, photoshop, video editing, and maybe some gaming.

I was looking into the EX625 and the GX620

After rebate, both models of the GX620 are the same price, but the 098 model has a better screen and a better processor. So I don't see any benefit to the 001 model. The EX625 has a better graphics card but the GX620 has a better screen and processor. I was just wondering which would be better, they are close to price after rebate, with the GX620 being $50 more.

    Any input would be appreciated.

I'd say for most games (First Person Shooters and the like) the EX625 will be noticeably better, and it will be a slight improvement for entertainment (better speakers with a built in sub-woofer). The GX620 is more usable for everything else, with it's higher resolution and faster processor (plus the Turbo switch to gain an extra 15-20% if you need it). They're the same size & weight, and I think the build quality is about the same between them.

For what it's worth, I considered the EX625 for a long time when they were offering the $50 rebate on it, and almost pulled the trigger on it a couple of times. All the user reviews of it over at Newegg are quite positive. In the end, though, I went for the GX.
For me, the 1366 x 768 resolution of the EX just isn't enough. I play some games, so I did want a decent GPU, but I'm not really into FPS, so the difference between the 9600m and the 4670 didn't really bother me. I'm also not that picky about sound quality (if I'm at home, I'll watch movies on the TV, if I'm on the road the volume is down or I'm using headphones anyway). But if I'm working on a document or some code or browsing the web, the extra resolution is handy, and the faster processor is nice for video encoding and some games (RTS or turn based)

Edit: One more thing I realized... the EX625 is a more normal looking laptop, whereas the red edge on the GX620 stands out a bit more. I would have preferred to not have the red, but it's not as obvious as some "gaming" laptops, so I'm okay with it for the price (and my daughter actually likes it).

    Both do all that well.
The EX625 is a better gaming laptop than the GX620, and if you can get over the lower res screen on the EX625 (honestly a 1366 x 768 screen resolution is not really that bad) it's a great choice.
And if you really want to see it fly you can always upgrade the CPU for cheap $$$ these days ( under $200 if you know were to look- I have found P8600 2.4 Ghz before for under $150...Really! :D )
That would make this good laptop into a killer little gaming rig.
And personally I think the EX625 looks much better.
