    Hey all,
So i've been shopping around for a new laptop. I was definately considering the GX640 but I can see now that NCIX has a new laptop (the E7405) on it's website. The problem is that I can't find any information about it online from MSI or otherwise. Anyone have any info on it? here are the specs i've been able to dig up but it would be nice to know if it's currently even released and what it looks like.

Hmm according to that, it'd suggest its the gx740 or a possible barebone, nice find on the name change though :D.

I was considering the gx640 too! Was going to get it until I made one last look and found the e7405. I did so much research on those 2 laptops and the ASUS n61jq but found out next to nothing about the e7405 except for those specs on pccanada.com. I don't think it's officially manufactured and shipped out yet. Everywhere I've checked (that has the notebook) is in back order! And none know when the shipment is. At the time of purchase, the gx640 still had stock at ncix...now THAT'S in backorder too! And with HST coming in July...I don't know what to do!!! OMGGGG lol

I'm seriously considering getting a refund and buying the gx640 instead. Since after doing some digging, the 5850 and the 5870 aren't that much different (from what I read on notebookcheck and reading the review on gx640). IT's only a few frames at best...except on ANNO 1440. The benchmarks for 5870 and 5850 on that site I mentioned earlier can't really be used to draw a final conclusion since they were taken from different reviews of different laptops. With that being said...I'm really thinking of buying the gx640 now...even though it has DDR2 ram instead of DDR3 (as the e7405 has).

Is there a big difference between ddr2 and ddr3 anyway?

Sorry for high jacking your thread. Just thought if I shed some light and offered my opinions/info as well, it'd better help you make your decision too :) Since I'm at that point as well. Hope to get some answers here! :D

Just placed my order for the MSI E7405-080US from jr.com. Read through all of the companies web practices with labelling and marking items with "Back Order", "Out of Stock" etc, and the item did not have any of these tags. $1,179, and free ground shipping.

I couldn't believe it either. about $1400 for a similar laptop on iBUYPOWER became $1,239.91 on XoticPC, which at the VERY last second, via random Google Search for a review of the laptop, yielded this price at J & R. I was like, "Yeah... but come on, it's gotta be out of stock, right?"

J & R also distributes it through Amazon.com with the same price point. Better tag than similarly-specced M11x, M15x, etc. etc. I assume better priced for similarly specced than the G73jh as well, although I haven't done much research into that laptop.

The BestBuy G73 is probably a better deal, but I don't know how easy it is to get one.

I had a GX-640 but I returned it since Amazon.com offered the MSI E7405 laptop for 1,099.99 for a limited time with free shipping and no tax! Also the E7405 has a larger 17 inch screen, Radeon 5870 1GB GDDR5, 4 speakers + subwoofer and has the HM55 compared to the GX640!

HM55 makes absolutely no difference here. In any case, I still prefer the GX640 since it's more portable, though if I didn't want to take it anywhere I would've gotten the E7405.

    While the E7405 has larger dimensions due to the 17" screen (15.56” (L) x 10.95” (W) x 1.37” (H) vs GX 640's 14.1” (L) x 10.24” (W) x 1.22” (H)), it's
only .74lbs heavier. But in terms of portability the GX640 absolutely wins. My previous laptop was a 14" HP with an integrated Ati radeon 4200 so for me the 17" screen as well as the Radeon 5870 1GB GDDR5 of the E7405 are both major upgrades for me.

HM55 chipset having more functionality than the PM55: The Calpella Platform Update : Mobile Core i7-920XM: Power Is The Price For Better Performance

Also the the E7405 has 3 USB ports while the GX640 has only 2.

I ordered my MSI E7405 June 17th and received it last Thursday, June 24th. Been using it for 5 days now and I must say I am very impressed with this laptop.

Actually, MSI's official specs state that the GX640 also uses HM55.
However, almost all of the extra features of HM55 are useless in the either laptop because they relate to the integrated graphics, which you can't use because the screen and video outputs are connected to the video card and not the IGP. Anti-Theft seems to be the only one there you can actually use.

Weird according to the MSI's U.S website MSI Notebook Official Website and MSI GX640: $1100 for a Speedy DX11 Laptop - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
it is using the PM55. Anyways you are right it is a futile comparison since both models don't utilize the IGP.

I see the ESATA port doubles as a USB port. So the E7405 has 3 USB ports + USB/ESTA combo port for 4 USB ports total compared to the GX640's 2 USB + USB/ESTA combo port equaling 3 in all.

What games, if any, have you been playing with it? What kind of performance have you seen, at what specs? I can't help whetting my appetite a little. :p

Yes it does have dual hard drives: OS_Install (C) 172GB and Data (D) 112GB hard drive.

Been playing Crysis: Warhead, The Witcher and Team Fortress 2.

I am able to run Crysis at 1680x1050 native resolution on Gamer (High) settings with 2x anti-aliasing. Game looks absolutely stunning, an amazing graphical showcase. Performance wise averages around 28FPS according to FRAPS, note that I am running at stock.

The Witcher I am able to play at maximum settings, plays very smooth with no stuttering at all.

Same with Team Fortress 2, everything highest settings and runs flawlessly but no surprise considering the game isn't that graphically demanding as Crysis.

Do you think you could get full Enthusiast settings (perhaps with Shadows and Shaders still on Gamer) with a 1280 x 720 resolution and no AA? At least with a consistent 25-30fps? I know that resolution is clear enough for me as I've played vanilla Crysis on my buddies 1920 x 1080 with it.

Also, you mentioned running at stock? What parts are overclockable? CPU and GPU? Can it be done easily from the startup BIOS?

Just thought I'd give an update. Played vanilla Crysis on 1280 x 720, no AA, all Very High except Shadows and Object Quality, and the average FPS in the daytime jungle area of the beginning was 19-20. For some, this may not be "playable", but I feel fine with it.

It has the same CPU, same screen resolution, but faster video card so my guess is gaming performance will be slightly better. If I had to repurchase, I'd still choose the GX640 for it's size and weight. You can always overclock the 5850 to attain 5870 performance more or less.

True that. I think the cooling system on the 17" models is not that much better though, it still uses one fan. Speaking of heat, I'm dying here in NY. :(

The MSI E7405 does have two vents rather than one that is in the GX640. With two vents the E7405 has better ventilation and the heat is released much faster.

you're right. I see it also has a separate heatsink for the gpu so I guess even with one fan it's definitely more effective than the GX640.

The 740 which is basically this, ran a bit hotter got to the 100's just by normal gaming from what I have seen.

I've been playing gta iv for about 2 hours, temps were at a steady 91 on my 640 on original vbios and drivers from msi website.

You could just contact MSI USA and inquire about it? The chassis is the same as the GX740, so there's one for sure.

    Use driver sweeper after uninstallation.
