I've been puzzled for days over this. It's a 1722 barebones with a T9400 ES installed. It is perfectly stable in XP Pro Safe Mode, not a single problem since the beginning.

But when I boot into XP Pro regular mode it will virtually always RESTART WITH NO BLUE SCREEN when doing some web surfing or trying to install .NET 3.5 from a downloaded file, etc. Prime95 has no errors. Tried one OCZ PC2-800 2GB at a time in each slot with no luck. Uninstalled ALL drivers including the Realtek 8111C, NVIDIA, audio--everything--and it still crashes when trying to install .NET 3.5 or other heavy HDD access. WD 320 SATA II NTFS with Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.7.0.1007 (01/09/09) as directed for Mobile PM45.

    Any ideas out there?

Who did you get the T9400 from? If it was not from extremeprocessors then that may be your problem. Also try upgrading your bios.

The processor came from xiaobaiyang2. I've seen the questions about his CPUs but haven't concluded anything yet. It seems to me that if it were the CPU there would be some kind of trouble in Safe Mode with Networking but there is no problem at all there.

BIOS is 1.0S and firmware 479. XP Pro SP3. CPU temp not a factor as I have watched temps while web surfing, installing a big app, etc.

I believe most people who have bought their processors from xiaobaiyang2 have had problems since it is not one of the later ES.

In case you haven't checked, xiaobaiyang2 has 359 feedback on eBay and they are 100% positive. And there are plenty of T9400 in there.

I am not going to find the posts but there are a few people that have filed claims to get a refund from him because it did not work in their 1722. This was recent, within the last week or two. Also, for about a week he had "Does not work with MSI Laptops in his listing." Check the MS-1722 thread.

All the complaints I remember seeing here about processors for the 1722 are T9400 ES chips from xiaobaiyang2.

I've seen some of those posts and I've followed his listings on eBay. I only saw one person here who requested a refund.

At one time somebody on eBay was questioning whether the T9400 would work on the 1722 but that has been resolved. The T9400 does work on the 1722 since it has a PM45. His current listing states "can wrok in MSI 1722".

This sounds like a windows process may be causing issues.

Another issue is to make sure that achi is disabled in the bios.

Some people to not give negatives for bad products. They just get refunds and move on.

If AHCI was still enabled, XP wouldn't have even installed.

Thanks to all for the input.

XP Pro was installed with latest SATA drivers embedded (F6 not necessary) and AHCI enabled. If I disable AHCI now it doesn't recognize the drive and will not boot.

It runs fine in XP Safe Mode with Networking and apparently will idle all day in full XP. It seems to only crash when I surf the web or try to install a big app.

Yeah, most anything is possible. I guess it's also possible that the people here claiming to have problems with xiaobang2 CPUs were actually working for extremeprocessors and trying to kill the competition. Who knows?

I would recommend trying to turn ACHI off and reinstall Xp...just to see if that helps.

I had the same problem, only I was using an ES P8600 from another ebay
seller, my 1722 would run all nice in xp, but after I installed sp3, it will
random reboot (it's fine at idle). I returned the cpu and ordered one from
extremeprocessor and now it's problem free.

Did you try running it in Safe Mode? This thing runs flawlessly in safe mode which makes me think the problem lies with some drivers or something else that only gets loaded in a standard boot.

If the screen flashes blue and then reboots do this.

If you are using WindowsXP, right click on my computer > Properties > Select the 'Advanced' tab > and under 'startup and recovery' click the 'settings' button. This will open a new window, and under the 'System Failure' heading, uncheck 'Automatically restart.'

this will stop automatic reboots when a bsod error occurs...ten you can see what the error is and troubleshoot it from there.
It could be something as silly as a bad video driver!

I would try running CPU-Z and see what stepping your CPU is, B1 steppings are the ones having problems i hear, C0 and up are fine.

What did you use to install? I've been trying to get that to work for a while now without success. I used the Intel drivers during install and even tried slipstreaming my SP1 disc to SP3 and it still didn't work.

yes, it worked fine in safe mode. That's what I thought too, I first thought
is the drivers, then windows, then I thought it's the graphics card and the
memory sticks... nothing works in 4 days and finally changing the cpu worked.

"Auto restart" is turned off. Still restarts without a blue screen.

It is a B1 but some are apparently okay.

I used an eSATA external HDD to install (super fast!) after slipstreaming SP3 into XP and then adding to that the Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers (iastor) using nLite. Caution: If you want to try this you must first format your HDD as Fat32 so that dos will recognize it. Super Fdisk works great for that. If the HDD is not Fat32 you'll end up booting to the dos prompt and the eSATA will be the C: drive.

It looks like I have a bunch of hard disk errors which may be the problem. I may have to reformat and reinstall XP from the beginning.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I just found out, that t9400 from ebay seller xiaobaiyang2 does not work with any msi laptops.

I had the same problem and had disabled everything and installed everything in another laptop to get it to work, but on my ms-1722 it was only working in safe mode, and I just read his auction, and on feb 22 2009 he states that his chip will not work with msi laptops.

Good luck out there, i'm gonna try and exchange it, but it's been 2 months since i bought it, so i hope i can.

keywords: blue screen of death, ms1722, safe mode.

Yes, I finally gave up and sent the CPU back for a refund after I had it about 13 days. Then got an E0 CPU from a different seller although xiaobaiyang2 does sell a few E0's in some models as well. He was very cooperative through the whole ordeal. The new CPU has run flawlessly including under stress.

(I would have tried to exchange the CPU for an E0 from xiaobaiyang2 but he would not ship a new one until he received the old one back and I didn't want to wait that long. Incidentally, I found out that you can't always trust EMS tracking numbers as there are duplicates in their system.)

I ended up shipping my T9400 back to xiaobaiyang2. I shipped it back via USPS. They dont offer tracking past customs so my paypal refund was delayed over a month. I ended up getting a retail proc and everything is running smooth.
