    Hey guys,

I have a bit of a problem. I received my barebones MSI 1651 notebook last monday, and put all the parts together today, EXCEPT FOR THE OPTICAL DRIVE. I'm assuming that this is not a problem.

Anyway, I installed the following components...

P8600 Processor (bought used on the NBR marketplace)
2x2GB Crucial DDR667 RAM (Parted from another notebook)
400GB HDD 5400RPM (Removed from an external USB HDD)
Intel 4965 Wireless N Card (Pared from another notebook)

As mentioned before, I did not install the optical drive because I am yet to receive one. However, I do have an external DVD rom I was planning to use to install windows.

When I power on the notebook, the fan goes on for a second and slows down to a quiet whisper... there is no activity with anything else. I thought the bios might not be compatible with the 4GB memory so I removed each stick.

I tested the memory on another notebook and they work fine. The hard drive is new so that should work fine and the wireless card already works.

Do you think it is the barebone, the processor, or the optical drive (missing)... I doubt it is the barebone itself because it is brand new, never used and it actually powers on.

    Any help is appreciated! Thanks

    It will either be:
    Ram
    CPU
    Barebones.

It will not be hd or lack of dvd as without either of these you can still get it to post.
When you power it on, do any of the LEDs power on?
Have you checked the seating of the graphics card? it may have come loose in transit.
Can you check another stick of ram. laptops are often picky about brand of ram they use and incompatible ram can stop a machine from posting.

p8600 is one of the newer cpu's electrosoft had a problem using newer cpu's as well. It's very likely you need a bios update, which you won't be able to do unless you use a older cpu.

Try removing the 4965 card, i have seen this card prevent these from posting. This model supports 5100 and 5300 wireless cards.

P8600s work fine in a 1651. It's what mine had and the GX620 always shipped with a P8600 in the higher end model and a P8400 int he lower end. It's a Montevina platform.

No one said it wasn't a montevina cpu...I said the bios may not support it because the p8600 was part of a refresh which might require a bios update to work properly. Comparing the bios from the gx620 will not work either. The 1651 and gx620 uses different bios. Both will work in each system, but they still do not contain all the same features.

I removed the Wireless card and it still will not start... the computer lights turn on, but it just stays there. No sign of the computer running whatsoever.... is there any way for this computer to start or to flash the bios without putting another processor in it?

I cant take the processor out of my girlfriend's notebook because it is too complicated

P.S. Thanks for the help so far guys... I really appreciate it.

I finally got it started. You have to make sure the screw that sets the CPU in place is in firm. You cant just make sure it fits snug you have to give it a little torque. I am using a P8400.
