Hey, sorry for the misleading title. It's actually 2 separate problems that occur independently, but both on my 1 laptop![]()
I have an MSI 1651 (GX620) that I got in January from avadirect.com (Specs in my sig).
1. On random occasion, my screen will not work properly. This has happened a few times. I have never dropped my computer. One time it happened, I was sitting down holding it and then I stood up very quickly and the screen started getting lines on it, and then it faded to black. Another time, I gently placed my laptop onto my desk and the screen went black except for the cursor, which turned into a huge white square that I could move around the screen for a few seconds and then one half of the screen faded to black and the other half to red (picture showing problem attached).
Also, my laptop keyboard and touchpad will randomly lock up on occasion. By this I mean everything is still working but I cannot use the keyboard or touchpad for any input; however, if I connect an external USB mouse than I can use that to move the cursor. When this lock up happens if I try to shut down the computer, then it actually freezes.
What could the possible problem for this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated![]()

Hmmm, overheat? Loose connections? Pretty colours for the lighting though, looks quite nice.
Grab HWMonitor and we can give the temperatures a quick test!
Lines can suggest GPU problems, and what drivers are you using for your graphics card? -

Based on what you said i would guess either the lcd it self or ribbon. Next time it happens take the lcd bezel off, unscrew the screen and move the ribbon connection slightly.

actually those 2 issues are probably related.

Using HWMonitor:
Core #0 | 39°C (102°F) | 38°C (100°F) | 49°C (120°F)
Core #1 | 39°C (102°F) | 39°C (102°F) | 49°C (120°F)
GPU Core | 56°C (132°F) | 55°C (130°F) | 56°C (132°F)
HDD | 45°C (112°F) | 45°C (112°F) | 46°C (114°F)
My system tells me two different numbers for the drivers. In the NVIDIA Control Panel System Information it says driver version 186.81. If I look at the properties of my video card through the Device Manager then it says I have Driver Version 6.14.11.8681. Under the Components tab in the NVIDIA Control Panel System Information dialog, it says almost all of the file versions of the various components are 6.14.11.8681.
Just earlier today, my screen got messed up again and I had to hold the power button until it turned off. Then I turned it back on and I could tell the backlight came on, but the screen stayed black. I had to hold the power button to turn it off again. Then I left it for about 10 minutes, came back, turned it on and it's been working ever since -

The lvds cable works just like a regular VGA cable. If there was a loose connection there the laptop would not freeze. Something might be wrong with the gpu. Since you bought it in January. Why don't you contact msi for service?

I contacted avadirect.com a few days ago, which is MSI's policy, to see how they might go about dealing with this situation.

I found out that it happens when pressure is applied to a certain area on the bottom of the laptop. Like if I pick it up with my thumb on the wrist-rest and my fingers putting all the pressure on the bottom near some grills/vents. I looked inside and apparently it puts pressure on the GPU and pushes the GPU or something which causes it to stop working, and the computer freezes. I have to hard turn-off my laptop and wait a bit for it to fix itself.
To fix this, can I get some kind of pads or something to reinforce this area or mitigate pressure? -
I'd grab some of those conductive thermal pads and stick 1 between it and the heatsink, it should bridge the gap. I bought one off of ebay not long ago, it was some sort of silicone based compound. Cant find it now though..

I'm looking into it. Thank you very much!
