Just to let you know guys that I have just upgraded to the GTX580M in my MSI 16F2 (originally came with 460m):

The drivers are a bit a mess to install, you have to go on laptopvideo2go and get the right modded .inf with your DEVICE ID and Subvendor..
INSTALLATION done with Beta 285.79 - 0.5mm Phobya thermal pads 5w/mk and AS5 used on both GPU and CPU

pretty much same results as a 6990m on stock clocks. Keep posted on your findings, I swear my 570m pads were 0.5
-
Defintely I should have used 0.5mm ! Will get them on Wed but quite happy overall
-
Very nice, I have the 560m in my qosmio laptop, here is my video card overclocked score..
-
could be a YMMV thing but mine old GT683 come with 1mm pads. Check if the upper transistors blocked the heatsink for the lower parts.
And again, great job!
@takorv: please run the performance profile, and your score will be shown with a P, which all of us here use. -
I ordered the same thermal pads you have (1.0mm) but I do have more but not sure the size. I will have to try the other ones, see if they work and if I have the same issues your running into. So with 3dmark11, running that test program you reached 92?
-
My bad, I was wondering what settings people use to bench mark with 3D
Marks 20111. I just ran it again on performance and scored 3,021. Thanks for the tip. -
Paul, if I were you I would be over the moon! that's awesome stuff
The fact that there is no throttle for you is pretty damn amazing. But there is some work left to lower the temps as 92C is pretty high and will wear your card out.
Just out of interest, where did you snag a Dell 580M from? Cause wouldn't that be quite pricey? -
I bought it brand new from a French fellow who had it as a spare (basically Dell technicians came to replace his 580m SLI cards but found out that there were no issues and forgot one of the card there) si I got a pretty good deal...
I am not worried about temps at all, as my thermal pads was way too high. When i pulled out the card, the paste was still in the center of the dieI will get my 0.5mm tomorrow and will do some proper tests again...
However, I can tell you that this GPU sucks too much power as under 3dmark11, power went as high as 170W straight away, no o/c...I'm not sure my 180W adapter will like that especially if I overclock it...
-
nice work + Rep
-
Thanks for the hint about the drivers, most all of my thermal pads were there from the 570m, had to add one for the two additional chips, how did you search for the drivers, my card is 10de-1211, so in the search terms, did you put in 10de and second box 1211? or did you just grab the most recent driver and inf file?
620 core 750 1240 99% gpu usage running 3dmark vantage, highest temperature was 76c, after running 3dmark, idling around 49c and lowering (thats with the back off, going to seal it up, see if I can bump up the clocks a bit and see what the temps are)
I think i'm happy with it so far... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You do need to pass the 570M scores to make it worth it really.
-
I was scoring with 3dmark vantage 11209 with 570m and a slight overclock, temps a little lower than that. Just jumped up the 580m to 700 core, 1400 shader, 1600 memory, highest temp is 78 running 3dmark vantage and scored is 13824. little higher temp and another 1k added to the score.
I think the one pad for the two extra mights might be 1mm, not sure if I replace that with .5mm that it will bring the temps down much. I used the thinnest I had. -
Wait for me till tomorrow, I will have the proper thermal pads.
What drivers have you used ? It is your Vantage GPU score I imagine right?
You have to place some thermal pads at the back of the cards as well, under both VRAMs and ICs.
Will give proper test tomorrow ! Can't wait ! -
I did not place thermal pads on the back side of the 580m as the 570m did not have thermal pads, I kept it pretty much the same. The heat sink is on the front side, not sure what the back side would use to dissipate heat. I could tear it apart and throw thermal on the same side, see if it drops.
I used the 295.18 drives as I could not download the modified inf for 290.53.
I took it apart and unless you get the tape that adheres to the back of the card, the thermal pad will not say. I did see where the thermal compound did not completely spread across the gpu, so I added just a little more on each side. I originally only put some in the middle but guess since it's rectangle, it wasn't enough.
Second run 3dmark vantage p13548 and max temp of 77c after pasting the gpu again.
I went back to 290.36, the 295 seemed quirky and the 290.53 inf file was not available. We'll see how that goes. Issues with this driver also, going to the last certified 285.62 and see what happens. -
You can hit 18k Vantage GPU score if you overvolt and push the 580M
With the custom vbios it just goes mentooooool -
Your score are a bit low tony, check that you do a clean uninstall before re-installing the drivers.
More infos to come tomorrow, but I am not worried about temps as I have done some nice mod on the laptop but rather on the power adapter.. -
Yes, the drivers seem to be a bit touchy. Not sure the best way to clean them up without doing an os restore, which I would prefer not to. I've been playing with different version of nvidia drivers and 285.62 seem to be the most stable. How did you clean out your drivers or did you?
(the scores I've been posting are the combined scores, not just the gpu score if that matters...) -

Perhaps uninstall current drivers normally, then use Driver Sweeper targeting Nvidia remnants.
-
I tried driver sweeper and it helped reinstall drivers but I could only successfully install 285.62 and 295.18. I went back with 285.62.

No luck, tried everything, this is one of the most finicky cards I've ever worked with. My 570, I could use any driver. This one, only two drivers work with the modified inf file, must be a dell, it's a pain to work with.....
-
Post your benchmark links if you can
edit: regarding the drivers, I had only tried the 285.62 and was very fine, do not mess with all the other drivers as so far some havent been great with some games (like BF3)...
You should hit 3.5k 3dmark11 and mini 14.2k on Vantage @ stock clocks, otherwise something is not right and always uninstall drivers as Strik3r posted link. -
3dmark does not recognize that I have the 580 installed, it shows in the device manager and in nvidia control panel but somethings not right.
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2820QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-1761 score: P12308 3DMarks
Weird, second run shows higher score
http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3825486
When I check the system information in the program its self, it shows the 580 correctly but when I submit results, it does not recognize the card. -
Comon you can do better than that guys... at least 17k overall...
-
Not sure where to go with mine, how you doing with yours pau1ow? Tempted to reformat and start with the 285 driver, see where I'm at from there.
-
It still low, I can just advise you to reformat your laptop and start again with 285.62
Mine will be setup tonight so will tell you more in prob 2 hours.
I am scared to be power limited though.. -
Nah you should be fine.
Also in your sig why is GTX580M in red? Bro that's reserved for the red team!
Should be green and the M4 should be sky blue...
I wanna see some overclocked benchmarks! -
You running the same 180w adapter? I see that the gt783 is running the same 180w adapter, probably no different than mine, same chassis, probably same motherboard.
I've got time saturday (probably get anxious and do it tonight) to go through and reformat the os, start over.
So far it's running, heat isnt bad (could replace the one thermal pad that might be thicker than the others) but it's just running slower than expected. But on that note, I was running my 570 with the most recent beta nvidia driver, which when the 580 was installed, as we both know, it didnt like the driver and only likes the 285 with the modified inf file that allows it to be installed. I did use the cleaner previously suggested but it runs the same. -
-
Guys, succesfully installed, idle temps under 40, 3dmark11 running now - pics to come with temps !
So far so good..
edit: drivers installation is easy as long as you have the nwmi.inf modified from lv2go tony..every single driver works -
Only thing I can think of is the OS install, there has to be something there that is causing the issues with the install of newer drivers, very weird I could only get two to work. Let me know what driver you end up using, etc. What vbios does your card have installed and are you going to stick with it?
-
I tried just to lauch the setup.exe of the 285.79 and 285.62 with the modded .inf and both worked.
However, I had to install PhysiX manually as it wasn't included in the setup app. -
I had install that separately also to get vantage to work as the cleaner broke physix. I have a feeling I have a few things messed up in the os. I might just stick with 285.62 until the next official whql is released.
-
Topic updated ! Check 1st post.
If you have followed the link given by Strik3r, you shouldn't get any issues as it cleared my mate issues with his bad drivers installation (he installed many without uninstalling them properly and caused corruption on BF3)...
Do you now have the 285.62 installed ? Is your GPU throttling? -
I followed the link strik3r gave but I was still having issues with driver installs. Can you give a link to your vantage score so I can compare them. Don't think it's throttling or i'd probably see worse scores. I ran through dirt and let it do it's performance test, no problem. I also ran skyrim with no problems also.
-
Funny, even your cpu score passes mine but I noticed your cpu speed is set to 3193 vs my 3093, your cpu score 19161 vs my 16420. Something doesn't seem right. I see that vantage also doesn't recognize your 580 also. Your graphic score beats mine but it's not stock also.
Thinking about it, probably running vantage with cpuz running and logging in the background, probably clocking down my cpu. -

-
lol I am thinking about overvolting right now because I know at stock voltage I can't pass the 750mhz core mark.
How is it going with the Corsair 1866 ? Are they finally worthy ? -
tony, are you using throttlestop ? I forgot to mention (as it is running in my background and I dont pay attention to it) but I really think your CPU is throttling !!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nope, gonna return them.
-
I want them but just so pointless ;-;
16k Paul, not bad. I want to see 17k and maybe more!!! PUSH BOY! -
Will overvolt later on dont worry
Will try to play some games at these clocks but so far temps are pretty handled and under control
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I still get very high CPU scores in vantage however -
Remind me how to confirm if throttle stop is enabled, is that a bios option? (which if I remember is speedstep, which is in the bios and I bet it's enabled)
-
Throttlestop is software matey you load into windows, no option in bios to overclock either you can get a slight increase in CPU speed if your running XMP ram.
Download ThrottleStop 4.00 Free - Performance Adjustment Tool for Core 2 / Core i CPUs - Softpedia -
So just put a check in clock modulation, chipset clock mod, eist and c1e? No number or other settings? From there, save it and close or does this have to run in the background?
-
Nothing
Just "Turn on" and reduce it ! It will be then running into the background ! And I am 100% sure you will have proper 580m performances..
