MS-1761 laptop (GT780DX) - not charging, producing smoke and smell when power supply is plugged in

Hey guys,

This issue just came up with my laptop yesterday. After unplugging and replugging a minute later I noticed that the laptop battery is not charging anymore. I have to say though the battery is really worn out, it only hold charge for like 15mins.

I can still power up the machine (it has some batter power left) but plugging it in is just producing some smell.

I took the laptop apart to see where the problem is. Here are some pictures of the power socket:

Everything looks ok to me to be honest (although I am no expert). But I can definitely feel a stronger smell around this bit.

So what do you think the problem is here? The power socket? or could it be the power supply (btw that is a adp-180hb b if it matters)?
I guess we can rule out the battery?

Anyone had similar experiences?

Since this is my work computer I’d appreciate any help you can give me.

Your machine is pretty old so things started to break down. The smell could be coming from the PCB where AC port is soldered onto.

 

If the smell is only happening when the battery is plugged it, then it might be the battery itself. Probably the PCB that controls some stuff got shorted or something. The fact that ur notebook is still running fine without battery only implies that the notebook itself should be fine.

Yes the rig is almost 6 years old now (with some upgrades earlier in the GPU dept), so I am not surprised.

@Danishblunt - I never tries without battery yet. What I've mentioned is the computer still boots up from battery power (the little there is left in it), so I think the battery is fine to be honest.

The image is not too clear (sorry) but that black ring there seems like the culprit here. (it's here also: https://prnt.sc/gb4g65)

Still the question is what caused it? Should I check the power supply somehow? Maybe it did let too much power through that burned the socket?

 

That looks like DC jack, if the smell is coming from there it's likely to be melting caused from heat therefore burning something. This is sometimes due to wear and tear.

 

Ok so the solution is just "simply" replace it then?

If you know how to solder the part, you can get the part off eBay and then perform the replacement.

 

Yeah, I don't really.
I ordered the part but will have someone else actually do it.

I still need to check the power supply for the output. make sure if its not too much. If it is I need to replace that also I guess.
