Hi all,
Ive got quite a problem. I have had a MS-1029 for about 1 1/2 years, and about 3 months ago developed a problem with booting. I contacted my reseller, ibuypower (yeah, I know) and the tech said I likely had a bad battery -- and that I should try running off AC power with the battery removed. Sure enough, it ran like a charm with the battery out -- for about 2 weeks, at which point it began having major problems booting again...actually just like the problems before trying the AC only "solution." Currently, my MS-1029 will not boot at ALL. At power on, the CPU fan starts running for about 2 seconds, then quits, and nothing else happens...nothing on screen, nada. I have noticed a regular, very faint "popping" sound coming from the speakers every second or so. I have tried removing every last component except the CPU...no change. I swung for the fences and even ordered a new MT-37 CPU, which I just installed, pasted, and locked in...and NO CHANGE. Power light comes on, CPU fan starts, then stops, and every second or so a faint "pop" from the speakers. The system stays on until I hold the power button a couple secs to turn it off. What on earth could be the culprit? Mobo? Ive been working on this thing for an ETERNITY, please help me out!
ps...I have a brand new battery Im running off of, as well.

Forgot a couple of things --
Additionally, after hitting the power button, the DVD drive (when attached) constantly tries to start, with the "seek" light flashing constantly and regularly, as if looking for a disc...the attempted "spooling" of the drive actually coincides with the "popping" coming over the speakers described above. With the DVD drive out, nothing changes. I have tried RAM out, one module in, etc. I have tried removing the battery for 10, 20, 30 secs, 12 hours, etc., no changes.
BTW...the CPU fan starts and blows full speed for 2 seconds, then "idles." It does not shut off altogether.
Lots of random bits of info, Im just praying something was worth mentioning. -
...a few days later, and it turns out to be the motherboard. Anyone know how difficult it is to replace it? I have been able to find a replacement at RK Computers, but Im wondering if Im getting in a bit over my head...Ive built several desktops for myself over the years, and Im rather handy...but this? Anyone tried anything like this? Any thoughts? And advice?
MS-1029 no post, and tried EVERYTHING!
