Ok, so I am interested in getting a MS-1029 barbone notebook computer becuase of its nice specs and price tag. I have been comparing it with acer and other companies and I decided this was the best route to take.

I am interested in the challange of assembling the computer, but I am unsure of a few things.

    1. I have Arctic Silver 5, I use it on my desktop, what kind of fan/heatsink do I need to put on this cpu?

    2. Do I need to apply anything to the GPU?

    3. I am confused on the RAM, is it SO-DIMM or DDR SDRAM like it says (desktop RAM)

    4. The battery that goes in the back by the screen, does it come with the computer or do I have to purchase this individually.

    Thanks! :)

    1. It will include the heatsink, fan and battery.
    2. The included heatsink already has themal paste for the GPU. You can replace that thermal paste and use your AS5.
    3. SODIMM is the form factor of the memory. Same RAM as in desktops, only phisically smaller.
    4. Read 1.

    Thanks for the reply!

I am getting the CPU OEM from newegg, are you saying that the case comes with the cpu fan?

Also the ram, SODIMM or DDR SODIMM, does it matter what one? It says DDR333 on the MSI website, but I have seen some things about DDR 400 working, what about that?

Yes, the barebones kit includes the fan. If you want to have DDR400 memory, you should get supertalent (it is a memory brand) sodimm modules.

Thanks again, do I need super talent memory to have ddr 400, would some CORSAIR 200pin DDR SODIMM 400 moduls work?

I really wouldn't know. Under BIOS 2.5, they may work, but I can't back that up with personal experience. When I put mine together, I used supertalent and it worked instantly.

    if not supertalent, use Kingston.

corsair has been said to work, but is not listed by MSI as supported.

Thanks for all the help guys! I am going to purchase this now. Now I am NOT concerned about battery life so I am opting for an ML serials turion, can I put a ML-37 in it? Is it MT only!!??

By the way, I am getting Super Talent Memory!

The 1036 supports both ML and MT processors as well as mobile AMD 64. I would recommend ML and MTs, though.

How does the 1029 NOT support ML processors when on AVAdirect on the customize section, you can add a ML processor into the 1029.

    hey, moldy

Ava may use MLs and may have done their own testing, you'll have to ask them, but officially MSI only supports the MT series (or sempron) 25w cpus on the 1029.

Yeah, I guess its not too bad to go with the MT processors anyways...better gas mileage in the run, might as well just spend teh extra 20-40 for the ml's counterpart.

    Thanks!

Also, i have a P4 in my desktop at 3 GHz, oced at 3.67, does a 512k cache make a big difference from the 1MB? Hucsman how well does your 1029 play games on the 1.8 GHz model?

I don't do any FPS, probably the most demandind game I have is Age of Empires III. Plays without a glitch.

You should consider the MT-34 though, I got the MT-32 just because the 34 was out of stock at the time I ordered, and I had to get the stuff in one specific day (importing and all).

I don't think ewiz is going to be able to help you with a badge, tbh.

yeah, that's the only problem with barebones and "shopping cart" type stores, they're great for lower prices but skimpy on those little things that you think about later.

I have seen on different posts the MSI logo that goes on the back of the lid. Can I get in contact with MSI and ask for them to ship one too me. I thought a basic MSI logo would ship with the thing but I guess it didn't.

    Any Ideas?

If not can someone give me some forums links or internet link on somthing I could put over it without making the whole computer look like crap!
