Has anyone been successful in pin modding the MS-1012? I've tried it with both a 1.5GHz and 1.6GHz 400MHz Dothan by both the jumper method and by setting the bus frequency via the dip switches with no success. The computer would not even start. Thanks in advance!

I recall reading of similar difficulties with an MSI 1032. The thread is out there somewhere. The end result was it does not appear possible with MSI notebooks.

I have tried it on my MS-1012. I could not get it to work. I think it must have somethng to do with the dip switches.

Have you guys tried doing the pinmod AND flipping the dip switches at the same time? My first attempt was unsuccessful and I've been meaning to try again doing both.

Thanks guys for the replies. I guess I'll just have to get the correct cpu if I want to go faster than my 1.6GHz. I tried every combination of jumpers and switches with no success. I am able to run at over 2GHz using Clockgen but a pain to configure everytime you reboot or come out of hibernation.

supposedly a new version of clockgen will be coming out that will let you apply settings at startup.

Have you guys noticed that when running a 400fsb, that the ram is only running at 125mhz? Seems like a bug in the BIOS where MSI is setting the ram divider the same whether you run a 400fsb or 533fsb. Another reason to run 533, whether by running clockgen or getting a new cpu.

I tried it several times with all different configurations. I could never get it to work. Of course, I could just be dumb. ;)

    bzo,

My RAM runs at 124mhz @ 400fsb and 133mhz @ 533fsb. I am running the latest BIOS I think. Any idea when the new verison of Clockgen is going to be available?

I haven't heard when it will be out, but the FAQ on the clockgen site says this:

Wow, here's something stange. I started my 1012 and went into Clockgen. I set the FSB to 132.99 the screen went crazy and the computer froze. This is exactly the same procedure that I've been doing for the last several weeks with no problems. I restarted and tried again with the same results. I then noticed that even when running at 100MHz FSB the memory is now running at 166MHz instead of the 124MHz that it was earlier. What this means is that I now cannot run at FSB 133MHz since the RAM goes to 222MHz which is way over the PC2700 specs. Any idea whats going on? It was working great earlier today at FSB@133, RAM @166MHz and CPU at 2.13GHz.

Does it do that even if you completely power off by pulling the battery and power cord? Have you changed the jumpers or BIOS settings lately?

I'd love to hear if you ever figure out how you got it to run the ram at 166. It pains me to think that my laptop is running a nice 1GB stick of Samsung PC3200 RAM at only 124Mhz!

    bzo,

Like I said it's stange! Today, it's back to normal. At startup FSB@400MHz and RAM@124MHz I can over clock to fSB 133MHz RAM 166MHz. I'll try to duplicate the problem and let you know what I find.

Hello, Im a newbie. I just recently bought an MSI MS-1012 laptop. I want to try clockgen to change the memory bus to 166. Its hard to think I switched from an HP laptop with celeron 1.3 but memory bus of 166 to MSI centrino 1.6 but memory bus of 124.
I tried to use clockgen but i needed the pll chip brand and model to be able to change the fsb. Do you know the MSI MS-1012 pll brand and model.
    Thanks.

    Hi wallyangler,

Just want to tell you I was able to duplicate your condition. 400FSB and memory running at 166Mhz. FSB :DRAM ratio of 3:5. Normally it is running at FSB :DRAM 4:5 making the ram frequency at 124.7.

I would like to discuss this with you. I've been in contact with MSI Tech and they've never accepted this problem on MS-1012 barebone.

Anyway, my email ad is [email protected] or [email protected].

    Thanks

    gilbert_xda,

so you figured out how to get the RAM to run at 166? Or is it a random occurence like Wallyangler?

    Hello BZO,

When I want it at 166, I drain the battery to about 70% (sometime less is needed but 70% works most of the time). I then turn it off then wait for about 10 sec. Turn it on again in battery mode then check memory bus again using cpu-z, you'll see the memory speed at 166 and FSB :DRAM is 3:5. Before doing this, make sure that the power option is at full speed or always on before turning the pc off.
Don't be disappointed if it didn't worked the first time. I tried almost all battery levels from 20% to 90% increments of 10%. 30% to 70% works.
Right now my s260 is running at 166.3 but the max I get with Sandra memory bandwidth is 1768MB/s. 600MB/s short from the DDR333 PC2700 of 2400MB/s.

    Good luck.

nice find gilbert_xda. That's pretty wacky that this notebook acts that way, but it is good to know.
