Not sure what i did to the graphics card but I has happened. The laptop will not start with the graphics card inserted, instead it shows that there is a fault with the battery (blinking amber light ). I think that is due to some short circuit on the graphics card, because if i put the graphics card in whilst plugged into the mains, sparks fly. before i had this problem i was modding my graphics card with some heateffect osinks for the vram. So far cleaning all thermal paste has had no affect on it.

An suggestion on how to fix this without replacing the graphics card?

it doesn't prevent overheat, in fact, thermal paste is a pretty good thermal insulator, just not as good as air is. Overheating is not the problem when your laptop doesn't even power on.

P.S. the laptop will power on for a few seconds w/o the graphics card inserted.

maybe a bad card if that is the case. have you checked the bios to see if you have internal graphics options. this was in bios 1.0s and earlier

I am pretty sure i don't have that option, but just in case i haven't noticed it before could you tell me where this option would be listed? My bios is 1.0S
