I have an MS-1722 with a dead 9600m GT. I bought an MXM 2.1 Type III 4870 off Ebay to find out that the mounting hole spacing is 46mm instead of 41mm on Type II (should have done some research). I'm trying to order a GPU heatsink from a GX740, but I'm required to have a serial number from a GX740. :( Can anyone help me out with ordering one? I'm in the U.S. I'd really appreciate it!

Marecki_clf sent me a helpful PM, but unfortunately it's not getting me anywhere. Anyone else with a GX740 that would be able to help me? Just needs a little info off a sticker on your laptop. :)

I think it might be worth your while to try and build a new heatsink.

You can use the old heatpipe, all you need is a new mounting plate for the bigger mounting holes. You can get this from some other heatsink.
Since the gx740 heatsink is such a simple shape, you might even be able to bend up another heatsink to get it to fit.
For example you could use this heatsink if you bent the pipes carefully. You might have to break of some metal from the mounting plate however and rotate it 90 degrees to use it. DELL OEM ALIENWARE M15X GPU VIDEO HEATSINK F41CJ | eBay

Otherwise, the process of changing a heatpipe to a different mounting plate is just like working with any solder, you just need more heat, a blowtorch usually works.

Thanks for the info. I'd only go that route as a last resort. I'd rather just put in a non-modified heatsink. Can someone please help me out with a serial number? I thought the forum was a tighter knit community that would help someone out.

The gx740 heatsink might not fit. You need the gt725 heatsink

Your lucky its for sale. Cannot be found anywhere.
    MSI Heatsink for ATI 4850m, fits MS-1722 GX720 GT725 - RARE | eBay
Not very reasonably priced, guess you'll have to make an offer though.

There are a lot of things you could have tried to find the serial

    A. asked MSI resellers such as RKcomputer
    B. searched through the owners thread (which is where this image was posted)
    C. google image search (like I did) http://oi40.tinypic.com/keelft.jpg

I suppose you could still contact rkcomputers for a better price on either of these heatsinks.

You're my hero! I've been scouring Ebay, but I never found this. Apparently my search skills are lacking. I've been dealing with RKComputer, who is the one that kept asking for the serial number. I didn't want to miss the boat on the Ebay heatsink, so I just went ahead and bought it. Thanks again! Rep coming your way.
