    Hi all,

I received my GE60 yesterday and was over the moon about it! I was really happy that I had received it.. But now, not so much...

Whenever booting the computer up, it takes ages going from the msi boot screen to the actual login page. I'm also trying to transfer files from an external hard drive to my laptop, speeds fine but it cripples everything else on the machine... Firefox crashed and then explorer stopped working so I had to do a hard restart and now I'm stuck at a windows update that isn't moving from 15%

It also just seems laggy in general, anything I do, it takes a while for the computer to react to what I've done, be it clicking on an app on desktop or a YouTube link in browser...

Is there a way to speed this laptop up as my old laptop is faster than this and if there isn't a way to speed this up, I'll probably see if I can send this back as its ridiculous

    Thanks in advance

    EDIT:

Because my friend was the one who told me about the laptop in the beginning, I got him to send me over a screen grab of his performance tab and his hard drive is sitting at 0% activity and 0ms response time, whereas mine is at 100% activity and 12k ms response time. Screen grabs below:

    Friends screen grab:
    http://postimg.org/image/t0mh3qred/

    My screen grab:
    http://postimg.org/image/bl3706wc9/

I tried doing a CHKDSK and restart but it was stuck on restart for about 15 minutes before I gave up and walked away hoping that when I got back it would be on the CHKDSK screen, but actually when I got back it was on the login screen so I have no idea if the disk is alright or not.

I have my own copy of Windows 7 so I am thinking of completely formatting the hard drive and installing this hoping that it will work. Will this void my warranty seeing as the laptop is less than a day old?

I had this problem with my MSI GT70, was pretty P/O about it...what i did to fix it is to reformat then have no junk ware i am guessing my the laptops hard drive was being used like crazy....I do no know why but yea. I got a hold of a Core windows 8 laptop software and continued from there.

P.S now that I reformatted it runs flawlessly!

Thanks for the reply, its very weird but when I enter a game, the computer is actually really nice, it's just when browsing the internet, copying files, opening applications etc that it hangs or crashes or whatever.

I've managed to get hold of the windows 8 key that comes with this laptop and was wondering if you knew that if I reformat this laptop and install Windows 8 using the key for the laptop, will it void my warranty?

Nope it won't void your warranty as long as you don't change anything hardware related.. you can reformat your pc as long as you wish. The key you got is an OEM key ment for MSI.
If online activation doesn't work you can always call MS directly and have it activated by phone with a confirmation ID ;)

The GE60 has an mSATA slot for an mSATA SSD.

A 256GB SATA III mSATA SSD or larger as your primary boot drive will really speed up your boot times, game loading and some overall performance.

Get an SSD and use the hard drive for storage.

You can get a Windows 8 ISO from the msdn link below to do a clean windows 8 installation using your key or the on in the bios.

    W8 x64:
    http://dl.msdnaa.undipcyber.us/software/Windows_8_Pro_EN-US_Retail_x64.ISO

Even though the ISO is named as Windows_8_Pro a Core(non pro) serial key can be used to install the non pro version from media created from the ISO.

Install W8 using the Core key that's on a sticker under the battery or embedded in the bios or a W8 Pro key

Use the Microsoft USB/DVD Tool to unpack the ISO onto a 4GB or larger USB flash drive to install W8.
    Microsoft Store

Remove the flash drive during the 1st reboot of the W8 installation.

If you go the reformat route, you'll never know what caused the performance drops - although it will probably, if not almost certainly, fix it. Usually certain background services conflict and cause nuances like this.

    Hi all,

So reformatting actually helped out a bit but its still not as fast as I would expect it to be but it runs all the games I want faster than my Alienware so I'm happy for the moment. :)

I was thinking of putting windows 7 on this but I've read somewhere that you need to have a certain firmware installed on the bios to so this as well as changing something in the bios from UEFI to legacy.

Does anyone have a link to a guide for this specific laptop? (Long shot but thought its worth a try)

No specific firmware needed. You just enable CSM/Legacy BIOS and then you can install. The drive will need to be converted to MBR as well for Windows 7 (Windows 8 uses GPT).

Could be drive read / write issue by looking at the issues you are having, download Seagate Seatools and run long generic test see if there is any problems with the drive:

You can also try CrystalDisk Info and compare the benchmark to the advertised read/write speed.

I've now tried all 3 of the above software and everything seems to be coming through as a pass or health OK...

I don't have the time to send this laptop back as, at the moment, it's vital I have a laptop with me.

I have a 2.5" 1TB ext HDD that I just took out of the enclosure. Am I able to replace the hard drive in the laptop with this one without voiding the warranty? Theres a warranty sticker over a screen hole, but not sure if this is a screw i need to take out in order to get to the hard drive.

The WDC WD7500PVT-22HXZT is a 5400 rpm hard drive as are the 1TB models.

Putting the 1TB hard drive in probably won't increase performance over the WD Scorpio Blue WDC WD7500PVT-22HXZT.

The Scorio Blue is used instead of the Scorpio Black 7200 rpm hard drives to keep advertized cost low on stock models as is other hardware in them compared to the GT lineup.

As I said earlier in this thread,if you want to improve performance you need to use an FAST SATA III 6GB/S SSD as your primary boot drive instead of a hard drive, especially a 5400rpm hard drive.

    Here's some to look at:

Amazon.com: MyDigitalSSD 256GB Smart Series SATA III (6G) SandForce mSATA SSD - MDMS-SFIII-256: Explore similar items

Crucial M500 Series 240GB SSD - 2.5 Form Factor, mSATA, Encryption Technology, Advanced Controller Technology, Adaptive Thermal Protection (CT240M500SSD3) at TigerDirect.com

I am having an issue with my graphics processor switching over to integrated graphics when I unplug the power cord. I have messed with the power options within windows and the control panel of NVidia with no solution.

I have read this may be a problem with Optimus technology? Does anyone know if there is a fix to this, so that I can continue to game on battery power using my NVidia processor?
