The only game I play is WoW, and i will probably play KOTOR when it comes out too. Is the gx640 wayyy too much of an overkill? I mean, I know it is a bit better than I need, but how much more?
Any other laptops I could use to get max graphics and 60fps everywhere? How would the Envy 14 deal with that?

Envy 14 vs MSi = MSi Win
it aint any overkill, maybe the posts you have read are by over-excited gamers.
Just go ahead and get it!!
And just a thought : If you drive sedans doesnt mean sports-car is a overkill, its always good to be a step-above -
gx640 can run WoW on max settings everywhere even dalaran. I know because i've tested it, i'm running it at 1920x1200 on my external samsung monitor, runs fine. Envy 14 will struggle a bit at max settings depending on where you are, but can definitely run it at slightly reduced settings, WoW is not graphic intensive at all, relatively.
With the Envy 14 however, you get about 3x the battery life with the slice and graphics switching. Its also smaller and more portable. It also looks a better too (subjective).
Both notebooks are great in performance and size, and both notebooks cost about the same. With the Envy 14 you get more portability and battery life whereas the MSI GX640 will give you far better performance if you ever decide to play more graphic intensive games (what is KOTOR?). -
Knights of the old republic. Sorry. Was in a rush. It may be more graphically demanding.
I AM going to school, but portability shouldn't really be an issue, and I mean, most laptops don't give a great battery life anyway, so with underclocking the CPU and GPU and getting 3.5 hours max, i mean, I can live with that. I may also buy a second battery incase I can't get one later which would also double my battery life.
I don't really plan on bringing my laptop to classes anyway considering I'm doing engineering, and using a laptop for physics math or calculus would just be dumb unless I make some uber macros.
I think I'll go for performance over portability.... -
knights of the old republic is several years old. has no problem playing it

Sorry, I meant "The Old Republic" the star wars MMO.

Honestly if you're studying at a university, nearly all tables come with plugs built into them. Just dont forget your AC adapter. And seeing how you're an engineering major, you'll spend alot of time studying so 2.5 hour battery life is pointless anyways.
If you want to get a second battery, i suggest getting one off ebay, they're usually about half the price and work pretty decently, i've done it before. Just be sure to check the seller's ratings. -
You might stand a chance if you were proficient with LaTeX, but I guess it still wouldn't be worth it.
Is this overkill?
