    Howdy,

TLDR: I'm going full circle, I had an RTX MSI GS65 and tried other laptops and thinking about getting it again from Best Buy since they're in stock. Is the Best Buy version gimped for any reason? I thought I read this on this forum, but maybe it was on Reddit.

    ------

I left my Best Buy bought MSI GS65 2060 to go to Razer. The Razer had coil whine and left it and went Alienware. I wasn't happy the AW and decided against gaming laptops all together since I have a pretty stout gaming desktop.

Now I'm using a HP Spectre X360 15t with a 1050ti Max Q. I'm pleased with it, but a couple issues, it has a synaptics trackpad (installed precision) and its just not as powerful for gaming as I had hoped.

I thought about an eGPU and upgrading my desktop from a 1080ti to a 2080ti and using the 1080ti in an eGPU then decided maybe not the best idea.

Long story short, I'm considering getting the MSI back from Best Buy since they're in stock, but read somewhere (here or Reddit) that the Best Buy version is not good and has something worth not getting it from them. Especially since the Mobo is reversed and can't be easily alleviated.

    Thanks in advance.

I bought my GS63VR from Best Buy and have really had no problems. To sell at Best Buy's prices, MSI had to skimp on the display panel for the Best Buy skus. In my case, a TN panel. Not the best in terms of display performance, but the price for the performance I gained was enough. Having an inverted motherboard is a characteristic of thin and lights, and not unique to Best Buy.

As GrandesBollas has indicated, the Best Buy aims for retail customers who may purchase machines without in-depth of knowledge with the screen details, among other things.

Double check on the SKU so you know what you are getting.

I bought my GS65 8RF-037 from best buy. Although it's a GTX 1070 max-q, i can confirm the display is IPS. I believe it all depends on price, of course the cheaper models are going to have cheaper components. As for the GS65, i'm not to sure they can skimp out on the display as that's one of the main features and i don't believe there are any cheap displays they can substitute that are 144hz with 7ms response time. The stick that came on mine says "IPS-Level Display", hope that helps a bit.

I called MSI just to get an answer on this, and granted I spoke with just some customer service rep, but he told me that the Best Buy model has some different components inside, but the major components are the same and all came from the same manufacturer. He did "reassure" me that all models regardless of specs have the same display from the same manufacturer and regardless of where I get it; best buy, amazon, newegg, or boutique store, it's gonna be the same. Disclosure, I added the "boutique" store part, but it was implied.
