Just like the thread title asks..

Is it possible to upgrade an MSI GT72VR 1060 GTX to a 1070 GTX?

I'm buying a laptop tomorrow (black friday) and have not found a straight answer. Whether I buy an msi or not depends on this question.

Can it be done for a reasonable price? Does it need to be sent to a company or can I do it myself?

Can I tag to this if op doesn't mind:

Can a GT73VR with a 1070 be upgraded to sli simply by adding another card, or card plus new power supply?

    Thanks.

I am also interested in this. I am under the impression that yeah, there will be some sort of kit that will include the GPU, heatsink and additional PSU. Dual 1070s should have an additional 240w PSU while the 1080 version should have an additional 330w PSU.

Not sure if we will see said kits this year though.

Hopefully MSI or resellers can chime in and help us out.

But was about going from a single 1060 to a single 1070? It shouldn't need a PSU upgrade...etc

Just need to know if this can be done in a GT72VR and how easily/cost (roughly)

Well in a GT72VR, yeah you could install a 1070, plug and play. It's the same slot, same heatsink, same everything.

Thing is, the 1070 will cost you something in the range of $700 to $900. It's enormously cheaper to just buy the GT72VR SKU with the 1070 right off the bat.

Why pay so much more later?

This. Yes it's 100% compatible and uses same heatsink. No you cannot send it to MSI for and upgrade but could purchase the card yourself and upgrade it at a later date. It's a slot in plug and play upgrade. No BIOS or vBIOS updates would be necessary.

This is one reason MSI is a winner this time around. Bonus points if you buy the Tornado F5 for a fully socketed experience.

    You never go full BGA.

The 1080 is only available on the GT73VR and GT80 models.
