Is MSI any good?

When comparing laptops MSI seem to have the most bang for buck but I'm not familiar with the company. How good quality are they. Are they as good or better than Asus? Thanks.

Hmm depending on which asus your looking at, i know the g50 and g60 gpu cooling is pretty baaad in comparison, MSI are solidly built with very little flaws!

 

They are not as tank-like as Asus, but that means they end up thinner and lighter as well. They also do not have the amazing default warranty that Asus has. However, the build quality in my opinion is just as good as Asus and they are whisper quiet. You won't get a significant increase in quality until you hit the Sager level and start paying quite a bit more.

 

Yeah agreed, the only sager problem was that damned 15 inch book with a hot HDD, however there are some amazingly priced GT725s in the UK at the moment under the name of advent 7555 GX?

(Im talking phenominally priced laptops.)

 

£650 for quad core GT725! Anyone who is even slightly considering buying the MSI should read this thread through and get their credit card out immediatly

I've said this many times, and I'll say it again, I own an MSI GT725 and a GX620, both of which aren't as solid as previous laptops I've owned, but the hardware will never fail I beleive. Don't get me wrong, they're not falling apart of anything, they just make a few squeaks when pressed/put pressure on.

 

Yeah I feel the same way about them. Not exactly solid engineering but more than adaquate. Compared to similar power laptops the MSI's are lighter and slimmer, not to mention cheaper too! They arn't the most solid, but only in the same way that a ferrari isnt as solid as truck. But if you want speed why would you care?

My old dell was very well bolted together but it overheated a lot. On that basis the flimsier MSI is actually the better engineered chassis.

Plus we arn't exactly talking about furniture or a garden shed thats got to last 20 years here... Even the flimisiest laptops around will likely survive long enough to become outdated on a tech level anyway.

To sum up if you want a fast laptop at the moment there are no faults big enough to not make the Advent branded MSI's the absolute best deal anywhere.

 

MSI is a stable, reputable company and has been in the business for a long time. They just don't produced only notebooks, by the way.

 

Their hardware has the advantage over other manufacturers that they make their own hardware. I.e. the nVidia 7900 GTX in my old dell was Foxconn branded, and the motherboard was something else, can't remember. In the GT725, the HD4850 is made and branded by MSI, as well as the motherboard I beleive.

Just purchased my second msi laptop and can't wait to receive it.

 

I just got one (msi 1651). the performance is superb, nice build quality.
The only flaw is the UGLY keyboard. But I dont care Ill get used to it. Its very light and a nice gaming machine!.

 

Likewise, I also don't like the keyboard. MSI sure do enjoy designing full keyboard on a small crampy footprint. They should've gone to removing the dedicated numeric keys instead.

 

I'd put the overall build above asus. The build quality is great, almost all of their machines are solid and durable. In my opinion, the appearance of MSI laptops are also a lot better than Asus, as Asus laptops like to tout around with useless leds and, in my opinion, flashy childish designs. I dislike some MSI designs though, and the keyboards have generally been mediocre in my experience.

 

I want one of the U230s if they ever get released. I know they make quality goods - just about everything in my current box is MSI and they overclock to hell and back. That's why I want a laptop made by them - they have quality that is actually astounding for the price.

And no, I'm just a customer, not some viral rep trying to convince you to buy their sh1t. Their sh1t sells itself.

 

Yeah keyboards could be improved... I think MSI made a reasonable trade-off between good solid keyboard and weight though. One of the main reasons MSI laptops look so good is they are very thin compared to asus etc packing similar hardware and cooling. This probably restricts the keyboard design too.

I don't think these things are worth complaining about too much though. If we forced MSI to eradicate keyboard and screen flex etc etc then all we would achieve is heavier, fatter laptops!

 

Very nice laptops to own...as the matter of fact much better than your average HP/Dell. Keyboards will and has always been a real problem for some of us due to the way they are seated...and crammed into a small place on some of their notebook...but overall very good.

Performance = 8 (due to my AMD Processor)

Style/looks = 9
Warranty = 5 (cause I don't really care much about warranty on this notebook)
Customer satisfaction = 10
Will buy agian = 10

 

Just like to add, i slipped on the ice with my machine hitting the ground first, machine is operating at 100% with no interior or exteroid damage, the bag was a cheap tecknika bag.

Me = Mega happy.

 

Images of MSI's new Wind netbooks, due to be launched at CES, could be a sign that the company might be redesigning their notebooks' looks.....complete with ubiquitous chiclet keyboard. Hopefully their larger notebooks get a similar face-lift treatment (no more red trim).

Lol, although i like it, I dont think MSI should really...Go with somebody elses style, in a sense MSI i unique for having there own thing, and theme.

I've never seen an MSI kb that wasn't complete crap. I would say to anyone drawn to the price/perf point, you never buy an MSI without getting your hands on a physical model you can test out. I understand kbs are ymmv more than most parts, but MSI really seems to stand out in favoring kbs that are not like the kbs you get elsewhere.

 

I have had one MSI laptop. Out of the box I loved the laptop, looks better then almost anything out there, is very light, and the “power” inside the laptop – the only way I could get something this fast with such great specs with anybody else would cost 2x as much.

However, the OUTSIDE of the laptop is where the problem is. Funny flexy keyboard, touchpad with finish designed for looks (but the finish comes off after use!), hinge problems, rubber feet falling off, etc etc.

If I could take the insides of my laptop and put it in a better case, it would be great!

 

MSI laptops are quite cheaper compared to other brands. Im just wondering whether these laptops are of good quality? How long does an MSI laptop usually last? What major problems do MSI owners experience?

Im planning to buy MSI EX460X T66. Is it practical to buy this laptop?
