MSI MS-1762-680M for 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3610QM processor - AGearNotebooks.com
I've been looking at getting this laptop for a long time, and I've just now come across agearnotebookscom that sells it for around 300 dollars cheaper then every other custom laptop vendor I've looked at How is this possible? Is there a catch I'm missing or something? It seems like the upgrades are ridiculously overpriced, but I planned on buying an SSD and extra RAM separately

They have contact info listed on their site, and the WHOIS on their domain says it's been registered since 2003. Why don't you call them?

They aren't on resellerratings but they are on yahoo shopping and they have a lot of reviews there. Also if you search the forum here for them you will find a good amount of threads. I haven't heard their name mentioned much.

Thats a great deal, so tempting.

The 1762 is a barebones type model.
This is an MSI Whitebook and not a branded MSI that has an MSI warranty.
They are listing it with a branded MSI type warranty.
The reseller is responsible for doing Whitebook warranty repairs.
Do you trust this company to carry out their warranty obligations?
Whitebooks normally have a 1 year parts and labor warranty.
If the deal seems too good.... -
Great deal indeed. Notice though they've got no SSD, but you'll can buy one yourself

Just spoke with a rep from xoticpc through a chat, he said the only difference between the agear laptop and the xoticpc version is that agear's warranty doesn't cover labor after 2 years have elapsed, while xoticpc covers labor for life. The agear HDD is 500 gb 7200 rpm while the xoticpc HDD is 750gb 5400 rpm. Those differences seem negligible for such a dramatic price difference. -
I am wary of such deal. It's too cheap... Mine costed more for similar base specs.
-
I'm just going to call the company later this afternoon and ask about the details.

Just called and spoke with David from agearnotebooks. I've never dealt with a reseller before, so I really don't know what to expect. His english was somewhat broken and he spoke very slowly. There are a ton of yahoo reviews, but many of them have the same date, especially August 2nd and 3rd 2011. I'm not sure if the site collects them all and publishes them at the same time, or if some of them are made up. Anyways. at first he didn't know which notebook I was talking about, I had to spell it out for him very slowly. Once he found it, he confirmed all the pricing that's on the website. He also said he would be willing to do his best to price match the price of this SSD on Amazon: Amazon.com: Intel 520 Series Solid-State Drive 120 GB SATA 6 Gb/s 2.5-Inch - SSDSC2CW120A3K5 (Reseller Kit): Computers & Accessories
I also asked who exactly builds the laptops, he said he didn't really know, then said sometimes they build the machines themselves and sometimes they get them already built from other places. I'm not sure if this is a normal response or not, being that I've never dealt with resellers before. He also stated that the warranty is 1 year parts and labor. I was hesitant to ask straight out "How is this $300 cheaper than any other reseller?" By the end of the call he seemed a tad irritated with my questions.
I got the vibe that David is the only sales person for this company, but I could be way off. He just didn't sound really knowledgeable or professional. If anyone else wants to call and see if anyone else answers, be my guest. -

If they are irritated on the front side of the transaction, it doesn't leave much room for optimism when things go wrong. There are a few retailers here on the forum that have spectacular reputations; you may want to talk to each of them and see which treats you best.

The site doesn't list a street address or PO box.
The local phone area code 510 says it's a California telephone area code which covers most eastern Bay Area cities in Alameda County (including the city of Oakland but excluding Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, and Sunol), and western Contra Costa County
The 962 exchange is reported to be Hayward California.

On the AGEAR site the smaller and usually cheaper barebones 15.6" 16F3 with a GTX680m is more money at $1454

I emailed Xotic to see if they would pricematch Agear's low price, and this was the response
On that particular model from Agear we are not able to match their pricing of the unit, as the price we are able to purchase the machine at is considerably higher than their starting price. Not sure how they’re able to have that low of a price but we aren’t able to drop that much.
So Agear is selling it below cost, there's something skeezy going on here -

so... who wants to be the first?))

Well I was very into getting the best price for my system so I'm curious on the price so lets match it what I got it
I ordered my msi 1762 from cyberpowerpc during the thanksgiving/black friday sale with upgrade options:
680m 4gb
16gb corsair vengence 1600mhz ram
750gb 7200rpm hd
win 8 pro
got borderlands 2 for free ... may not be great but its free!, free shipping, no sales tax
grand total $1659, free shipping, no sales tax
this site has one for $1260 which is much cheaper but doesn't come with what i got.
So lets customize it up:
the processor is slightly slower 2.3 vs. 2.4ghz and cant be changed to what I got unless you want something much more expensive
16gb 1600 mhz ram 2 sticks
500gb 7200rpm drive cant go higher
win 7 pro
$1,539.39 + $27.76shipping + Tax: $0.00??? = $1,614.76 which is $55 less then cyberpowerpc, but also with less in it.
So its an amazing deal if you don't upgrade. But there are other places that get close or have beaten the price. So if it seems sketchy go elsewhere. -
You know people, I am 99% sure that instead of 680M you will get there 675 or whichever is in that model of barebones... assuming that ssite is legit.
On eBay some idiots listed the barebone with 680M for 999$ while wrote the model number of the low end type of brebone with 675M. In fact they are scams because I have already wrote them about ther mistake they said tthey will look at it but nothing.
Real barebone with 680M costs now 1300 and was 1250$. -
Hey All,
I actually received mine yesterday from agear. NVidia drivers identified the GPU as GTX680M. 8GB RAM as advertized, i7-3610QM, as advertised. 750GB HDD, as opposed to the 500GB on their site. Looking at the prices for the upgrades on their site, i'm guessing that those parts are actually supposed to be "Nothing". As though they set up the process to allow you to order a bare bones laptop, but put actual parts into the order page instead of just leaving the default empty.
That's just speculation, tho. In the end, i got a nicely appointed GX680M laptop for a price other places charge for just the chassis, mobo, and gpu.
Planning on running the laptop through it paces tonight. I'll post updates as they come.

P.S. Hello community! :hi2: -
Counterfeit components? There's a lot of wireless NICs that are counterfeit. Could also be stolen. You can see if MSI has them as an authorized reseller. Check if they take PayPal and pay with that.

First post... cool

I ordered on 11/23, before I discovered this thread. Their presale service sucked. I had to email to get them to update the order status, and was notified it had shipped the day before it arrived. I'll be picking it apart today to see if anything else is odd. Not really the sort of experience i would recommend to others. As i said previously, i assume mistakes before fraud, but i'll be inspecting as best i can.
I'll toss an update later, as i can.
