I bought the new MSI GE40, does anyone have any questions about it?
Theres a lack of reviews for this thing and I don't think the screen is IPS as the reviews said they were.

Heres temps after gaming for 12 minutes.

Definitely not an IPS screen. Viewing angle were very picky.

yup! i have some question here,
    1) Can you tell the disadvantages and advantages of this laptop that are important for you (maybe in terms of the heat or speaker)?
    2) And what type of graphic card memory does it have? is it ddr3 or gddr5? since i know gtx850m have different type of variant.
    2) How about gaming performance?
    3) Any differences with the older one ge40 2oc?
    4) Does the heat temps can cause an issue?
    5) Is it worth it to buy?

    Thank you in advance!

The heat around the palm rest on the left side is quite annoying during gaming but manageable.

    2) And what type of graphic card memory does it have? is it ddr3 or gddr5? since i know gtx850m have different type of variant.
    GDDR5 GTX 850M

    2) How about gaming performance?
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

    3) Any differences with the older one ge40 2oc?
I didn't have the 2OC but it just seems like a regular spec update. 1080p screenn 850m and 4712MQ

    4) Does the heat temps can cause an issue?
It could potentially damage the system over time.

    5) Is it worth it to buy?
If you need a light gaming laptop this yes its great. Personally I wouldn't re-buy it though. Can't return it because of the NCIX restocking fee.

Hi Chris, you can check the model of the screen using pc wizard: PC-Wizard CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Under the video section, if you click on monitor type, you can see the product ID and we can use that to see if it is actually IPS or not.

Since you bought it from NCIX, I assume that you have the GE40 2PC-481US correct?

Also, how is the battery life?

I had to return it. Screen backlight was flickering on battery which only lasts 5 hours with just onenote open and almost a the minimum screen brightness.
The screen was definitely not IPS as the viewing angles were not great.
12 Minutes of gaming led to a 90C CPU (10C away from Max) and the palm rests heats up like no tomorrow as all the copper heatpipes are located just below.
Also it was quite loud on idle and even more so while gaming.

I'd say stay away from this laptop. Quality control sucks and I doubt it will last long at those temperatures.

Wow. That is really a shame. On paper is looks really good and based on the barebones type review, the battery life should be around 10 hours low use and 5 hours looping through a movie (not sure if 720p or 1080p).

Any thoughts on what you're going to get to replace it? Other than the GE40, I have been looking at the Lenovo Y50. It is 15.6", 5.3 lbs, 5hrs wifi / 3 hrs 720p movie, Geforce GTX 860M 2GB GDDR5, i7-4700HQ, dedicated cooling fans for the CPU and GPU for $1150+tax
Other than that, there are the ASUS and HP laptops that have the GDDR3 variant of the Geforce GTX 850M.
I rank the GE40 above the Y50 for the lower weight, longer battery life, and support of multiple internal hard drives. But, based on your experience, I may reconsider.

Looking at the limited number of benchmarks out there, it seems like the GDDR3 and GDDR5 variants score about the same. But, I have yet to see an official review citing benchmark scores. So, the ASUS and HP laptops may be worth considering as well.

I was actually only getting 5 hours while web browsing... Kind of pathetic. 4 hours during a skype call with video which was impressive.
I ordered the Y50 which is a lot better at cooling and the thermal design looks to be great. The GE40 was super loud and the palm rest area would heat up quite a bit. Furthermore, I didnt want to be that guy in class with the super loud laptop. Yes it was loud during basic tasks.

I got the Y50 for $999CAD+tax. Student discount + $100 off for the pricing error.

Thanks for the update. How's the battery life on the Y50?
