You'd think quality control and user opinion would have some influence on this reoccuring problem. My 1039 hinge, much like everyone else's, is cracking. Even when I first got the laptop I thought the hinges were too tight. And now it's become a problem like everyone elses.

So, some have been able to remove their lids and loosen the hinge with a tool. How do you safely remove the lid and of course, re-attatch the lid when finished?

Also, my dvd drive has developed an "issue" lately. It doesn't want to read discs, nor does any information on the disc show up when I go into My Computer and into the disc.

    Any suggestions?

I suggest you contact MSI for a possible RMA. You might want to change your username too. ;)

So I voided the warranty, it's out in a month or two anyways and getting an RMA is like having your teeth drilled with an old rusted bit.

I found the screws hidden behind those circular rubber pads, sneaky things. Got the tiny border plastic lid off, found all the FUN WIRES! and disconnected them to remove the screen from the back lid. That took me a while, though it was suprisingly easy. The full back lid was a mess, well, the hinges were a mess. The anchors for the screws were busted from the plastic because of the tight hinges. Super glue fixed that up right nice. Though for anyone who is going to use any type of glue to reset the gold anchors, place the anchors with the screws already in them when you set them into the superglue. Getting super glue out of tiny threads is a problem. Live and learn.

So yeah, MSI could have done a much better job with these hinges. Thankfully the metal parts weren't bent too much, it was the plastic that gave. The hinges were really tight, and I took the advice another handy guy mentioned and used a wrench instead of the leatherman tool. Much better torque control with a socket wrench. So I reset the right anchors in superglue, loosened the hinge a bit on both sides so pressure would be equal. The plastic around the anchors on the left were ok, couldn't see any such wear yet.

Though I think I'll play around more in a couple months when I have more time. Take the plastic gray covers off, fix any cracks, and paint the surfaces and try to re-inforce them, make them stronger.

I love my 1039, even if it is a little dysfunctional.

If you're going to remove your lid and try to fix the problem yourself, REMEMBER WHERE THE WIRES GO!!! not just where they plug in, but how they're routed around the LCD and hinges.

If all else fails, you could turn your laptop into a desktop... :)

    Have a great spring everyone!!

    Ted

Oh, and one suggestion for any new buyers of any laptop. When you buy it, you do all the programing and software stuff you want, so on and so forth.

Also check the mechanics of the item, like the hinges. I like to play around with things and figure out how they work. If I played with my hinges much sooner, I would have had less of a problem later fixing them.

Though how can you know something is broken if you dont see signs or symptoms?

    Live and learn.

I'm goin to play battlefield, have fun!

I successfully loosened my hinges as well. I applied the same method you applied but I did not disconnect any wires or remove my screen from the back lid. You can just take the front cover off, carefully remove two screws on the bottom of the lid, which hold the back lid to the hinges, move the lid off the hinges, being careful not to move it very far so as not to pull on the attached wires, and then take a 7/32 inch socket and loosen the hinges. It worked very nicely and now my lid opens and closes with ease.
