Hi everyone, I couldn't really find a definite answer so here's a thread. Just wanna know how the noise is at idle/casual usage. Interested in any and all GT70 models. Sure there are decibel reviews at notebookcheck but hearing from real owners' experience is much better!
So, can you hear it at all? If so, can you please describe the volume and kind of noise (whoosh, whine, hum, etc.)?
    Thanks in advance!!

Mine is quiet when idle, I can only hear a slight fan noise when i put my ear up to the laptop vent, but when i turn the turbo fan on, it gets quite loud. I don't mind the noise because I'd rather keep my laptop cool during intensive applications, rather than worry about my laptop possibly overheating because i care about the noise.

Thanks elmyo! +rep. Since you actually own a GT70, can I ask you some quick questions? Which GT70 model do you have? Does the fan shut down completely for everyday tasks? Cause I know with ASUS the fans are always on no matter what. Or does the fan switch on and off? And if you can hear it, what does it sound like, more like a whoosh (airy) or whiine (tonal)? Thanks

I own the Gt70 20D-001 US. The fan does not shut off completely when idle, or for everyday tasks, it just runs at low speed, and its barley audible. However when the turbo fan is put on, there is a whoosh sound given the fact the fan is running at full speed.

I owned the GT70 with GTX 680M. The fan was always on even when you were not gaming. But the fan sound was too me pretty soothing (lol). MSI use a much bigger fan than you find on Alienware and Clevo and Asus, so if you have heard the difference between a 90mm fan vs a 120mm fan, you get the general idea. It is a WHOOOSH sound, also when gaming but with higher speed of course, and its not bad. I was worried like you because fan noise is something I hate.

I have used different brands over the years and I can tell you that it is a lot more annoying to own a notebook with fan cycle that goes on and off every single minute. And that cycle follows temperature, so if you are gaming in the summer or have dust in the notebook, that fan cycle will potentially be even worse then. So the "always on" which MSI use is not bad at all when it is a quiet big fan that is running :)

The new GT70 models have improved the noise when not gaming, from 36dB to 32dB which is barely audible. Gaming noise is about the same according to notebookcheck.

To quote Anandtechs review of the last previous GT70 model (which I owned)

lol why is there a limit to +rep I can give. You guys are very helpful. I'm super relieved it's a whoosh not whiine. I was hoping for complete fan shutdown during idle, but I guess continuous on is the next best thing.

Just glad there are other noise-sensitive people here who are willing to share info. Right now stuck between the new quieter GT70's and the ASUS G750, which I heard was SILENT for some people (only until putting ear next to vent in silent environment).

No problem. Noise is one of my primary concerns and is one of the reasons why I read reviews before I make up my mind on what to buy :)

As for the G750, you have only heard the user opinions from those who own the G750JX, with GTX 765m. Just wait until the Asus model with 780M is released. With 2x as many cores on the GPU. Then we can talk. ;)

The G750 is a nice notebook but it is not upgradable friendly. Asus use their own weird shaped GPUs which they only make. So you are stuck with that one. The CPU they use is soldered on the motherboard, meaning you cant upgrade it. GT70 is 100% upgradable friendly and is a hell lot easier to repaste. Check out the repasting procedure on the G750 in the Asus forum and you will get a good laugh. :)
Did I mention that we have our own dedicated fan control software made by one forum member here, that let you control the fan on the GT70? That isnt something you will find on G750..

Also, check out Tomshardware review on the GT70. They covered all bases and its a really good review.

Under light load/idle with Optimus only using the Intel igp, my GT60 is essentially silent out of the box... the GT70 should run the same. MSI did release an updated EC profile that bumped the idle fan speed up a fuzz I'd recommend avoiding, but fan speed is still easily set with one of the fan control tools to silent if you do update. If desktop and light usage noise is a concern, then the GT60/70's are very quiet and great choices... with Optimus the 780m is powered down and with the thermal bridge and oversized single fan it's a very quiet combo.

Now, turbo boost while gaming is a different story ha, but that's only while gaming when you want to push the hardware very hard and still keep it cool. It does a fantastic job of keeping things cool, even while overclocked, but there is some fan noise :D

My 780mgtx based gt70 is almost silent on idle. On it right now with the hdmi hooked up to the TV watching a show while typing this. Silent. Cant hear it.

    When gaming, its another story....

Comparing my Asus G51 GTX 260M to MSI GT70 GTX 680M they are as quiet on idle with a faint hum. When stressing there's a big difference in advantage to MSI - it's much more tolerable and raising the noise level just somewhat. But on forced full speed the fan is really loud, in normal use I never came even near - Asus does almost full speed and noise quite easily. I didn't expect that normal gaming could be as tolerable and the temperatures seem to be very low compared to all my ex laptops.

Just went to check out a friend's new ASUS G750 and yes there is a hum during browsing but not during idle. On full load it was pretty alright, definitely not a problem. Now I just gotta check out a GT70 and report back!
