I just sold my g73-jh and have nothing to complain about as far as perfomance goes or customer service. The thing was so good looking and I loved the overall feel, as well as minimal upkeep of the matte finish. I am looking to get something as a replacement when I stumbled upon the GT78OR. I can honestly say I have never heard of the company and was wondering what the customer service was like, the overall build and component quality, the longevity, is it easily upgraded or will I have to replace it in a few months, as well as the price to performance ratio. I have had horrific experiences with dell before, therefore am hesitant when even looking into an alienware, the light show is nifty, and as a female I can appreciate the color customization ability, but the cheap plastic and clunky design is a major turn off, not to mention I feel theres no reason to just pay for a name if there is something better out there. The Msi seems at first glance to be a hybrid of the Asus and Alienware when it comes to looks, so it might be a nice compromise - a kind of have your cake and eat it too, where I get the colors I want and the sturdy build I require. Im looking for any feed back you have. Thanks for your time~~

    ... first pink, now ... purple :p
Reading this post seems to me that you have already decide to take it, but this uncertainty wants from you somebody to confirm it. ;)
    - Build Quality: With every newer model than mine it gets better and better (and mine is good - signature)
    - Customer Support: I've heard good things in overall. Never had to use it.
    - Component Upgrades: This baby is made for a computer freak. Everything is so easy to access and change whenever you need it.
    - Replace: No-o-o, I think that you'll never want to do that once you get it :) Even when it gets old :)
    - Colors: Well MSI offers it in 7 different colors and they all are nuances of black :D. But it is only noticeable to people who can see those nuances :)
    - Price/Performance Ratio: There is no point of talking about that. It's the best and none of the other brands can compete.

And there are 10 Reasons why Striker opted the MSI GT780R, over the Asus G74SX

    1. An eSATA port, STANDARD!
    2. An extra USB 3.0 port, STANDARD!
    3. Brushed aluminum chassis, STANDARD!
    4. More onboard DDR3 memory (16 GB), STANDARD!
    5. HD 720P webcam that performs at 30 FPS, STANDARD!
    6. HD 1080P LED back-lit MATTE anti-glare screen, STANDARD!
    7. Bios RAID configurable (many notebooks entirely lack RAID support), STANDARD!
    8. The Dynaudio speaker system (BEST in the laptop industry and actually sounds GOOD!), STANDARD!
    9. A 'Steelseries' true tactile-feel gamer’s keyboard, with software control color back-lighting, STANDARD!
    10. It's LESS EXPENSIVE, and available NOW!

Well I havent made my decision just yet, I was just stating what it looked like at first glance to me, but as Im sure we all know not everything that glitters is gold. I was wondering though, what is the ventilation like? Would it be more comparable to m17xr3 or g73? Meaning is the air flow directed strictly out the back like an exhaust, or will it have multiple outlets that include the bottom. And Ill keep a look out on the owners thread, I just was looking for a more exact response as far as comparisons go as well.

Yeah it looks as though it has vents on the bottom, thats one draw back in my opinion, because i couldnt use the alienware for more than 30 mins before it started to fry my legs. Im looking more into the card and what not as far as specs go right now if the bench marks are not to different I may sacrifice the msi just for that simple reason.

MSI gt780r is just better than g73 or g74 at this point.. It has better keyboard and speaker... It's easier to open and don't have powercord at right, optical drive on left. It's smaller, lighter too. I would never go back to asus unless they change the design and have equivalent keyboard + speaker and have better price.

Just to clarify this before I post so as not to confuse anyone, my GF has been posting on my account, so these posts are from her except for this one, so I dont actually have multiple personalities :p

Shin I find it fairly difficult to believe it can be that far improved over the G73.
I currently own an Alienware M17x.r3, which I had to purchase after the G73SW-A1 was recalled due to the initial sandy bridge failures in January. I can say with full confidence that the G73 was easily the most well designed laptop I've ever laid my eyes on in my life. It was small, blew all of the air out of the back, quiet, lightweight, and coated in an amazing rubber that protected the laptop from all blemishes. The only real concern I had with the laptop was the keyboard didnt work very well with how fast I type.

I've never personally seen an MSI laptop anywhere (figured it was a crappy brand because of that) but I can say from experience that the M17 I'm on right now has VERY few advantages over the G73, being a better keyboard, slot loading DVD, and more ports for optical audio etc. options.

I believe that the speaker quality is important in a laptop to the extent that it needs to be able to push sound out at max volume w/o blowing after just a year of use. Aside from that I cant see it having much importance, as we live in the city and go to college, so you really cant use the laptop audio almost anywhere anyways, so headphones are of great importance. And as far as audio quality goes, this M17x has a digital optical out for lossless HD audio, which pairs quite well with my 300$ ASTRO A-40's.

Other than the audio and the keyboard quality/accuracy, I cant really say anything else is good about the M17x over the G73. The build quality is extremely poor, the monitor sits off angle to the rest of the laptop due to an apparent manufacturing defect, the hand wrest sits a good inch off of the table so it is quite uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time, especially if youre typing alot, and its heavy as all hell, and blows lava hot air directly out of the bottom onto your knees. The worst by far though, is that in a good faith attempt to further protect the laptop, they have added a plastic shield that goes in front of the LCD monitor to protect the actual LCD screen itself from receiving blemishes, but this seems to have been a hasty addition on their behalf, because my plastic protector (after only months of use) is covered in scratches, as well as the metal bar where the function keys are above the keyboard. How did this happen one may ask? Well, apparently the shield sits too close to the keyboard, so something as small as a grain of sand can get closed between the keyboard and the screen protector, and after a day of moving around from class to class, will have scratched a nice indent into both the keyboard and the shield. Its very disappointing to see this on a 2500$ piece of hardware.

However, the M17x is better than nearly every single laptop I see on campus (not because of its pretty lights) but because of the build quality (which is already pale in comparison to the G73), so I just find it hard to believe that MSI can offer something to compete with these big names....

I'm not here to bash MSI by any means, simply trying to get some very informative replies with direct comparisons to G73/M17x.r3 so that we can make sure to get her a laptop that doesnt fall apart like a kmart toy after a year.

So anything you guys have that are convincing in MSI's favor please post them, we are actively looking for her next laptop.

    So far I've owned

    ASUS - G71 and G73 (5870 best buy model)
    MSI GX620 and GX740 (still own 740)
    Gateway FX 7901 and 7805
    Alienware M17x R1 and M18x R1 (still own m18x)
    Sony - VAIO

Every notebook has its flaws. Gateway FX were the best priced gaming notebooks in the world. ASUS has some of the best build quality next to Alienware's anodized aluminum chassis'. Alienware's keyboards are the best in my opinion. (they register when typing fast). MSI has one of the longest warranty's offered and great driver support. I can go on and on.

    My ultimate notebook would be

    Alienware/ASUS chassis
    Alienware keyboard
    MSI dynaudio sound
    MSI driver support
    MSI 3 years standard warranty
    ASUS/AW RGB 1080P/1200P screen

I can vouch for MSI's quality but you may run into the same typing issues with keys not registering on the chiclet keyboard with the 780R. If I were you I'd wait to see on G74 reviews on the keyboard.

She doesnt have a problem with the keyboard, I'm the only one that it bothers, so that shouldnt be an issue if its comparable to the g73

the gt780R comes with the steelseries keyboard, which I hear is amazing, if i recall correctly it can register 10 keys a time. You won't have to worry about the keyboard on the 780R.

Can you link it? I'm getting it and would like to see what they say. The only problem I've seen is the cable coming lose which is pretty easily fixed, the videos I've watched have said it was great.

Yeah the keyboard works fine for me on the asus, and I like I said, the cooling was a dream; especially when I am wearing shorts. Its nice to get more than a half of an hour into a game with out burning my legs. The warranty may come in handy but I am going to look further into the stipulations, the asus offers a 2 year global, as well as a 1 year accidental, but im really not worried about damage. i just want a pc that will be sufficient so that a warranty isnt the deal breaker.

I don't see how you can go wrong with either the ASUS or the MSi then. I personally would go for the MSi.
