I've been considering getting a GX640-260 since the pricing looks so good, but the heat seems to be the consistent downside mentioned in reviews. How bad is this really? Is it much worse than similarly priced or specced machines?

I would recommend AS 5 or MX-3 or better yet, Zalman has some thermal compound that dropped my temps significantly.
In short, its usable out of the box and its even better when you change the paste.
I would personally get this laptop again as it is the best 15.4" laptop for its price bracket. Since it is among the thinest and lightest gaming notebooks that I have seen. (G51JX-whatever are all 7.7+ lbs, this is only 5.9) -
Cool, thanks for the reply. I'm still weighing my options, but this is definitely compelling. I'm expecting to get paid for something soon, after which I will be buying a new notebook.

the heat isnt too bad. After 4-5 hrs of intense bc2 i reach around 91oC. This is with an OC as well 700/1000. Not bad for a chassis this thin. Im assuming changing thermal compound or adding a copper shim will decrease temps quite a bit

After my recent, additional mods to the cooling system, here are my temps in Furmark at 840/[email protected] (my lappy is GX740 though):
These temps were achieved without any laptop cooling pad, just on a flat wooden desk. I have modded the laptop's heatsink and bottom cover. I have posted the pictures of my mods here:

I have made further mods to the RAM heatsinks I had attached to the GPU heatsink. I will post the photos of the recent mods tomorrow.
Here are the temps in Furmark extreme burning mode while using the CoolerMaster Notepal W2 (3fan) laptop cooling pad:
Here is my current Vantage score:
PS.
Ambient temperature was around 26*C during testing. -
And thanks for all the feedback, guys
