    Ok, so I have a:
    GT72 2QD-1445US
    Product SKU: BB7570H16G1T0S81M
    Model: 9S7-178131-1445

I know there are two SATA ports (optical drive and one 2.5" drive bay) and another four routed to the m.2 "sled".

Is it true that the optical drive and 2.5" drive bay ports are SATA 2 only? I have a Samsung 850 Pro. and if that's the case, I'll have to find a m.2 to SATA adapter so I can use that 850 Pro. in the open 2.5" drive bay.

All SATA III ports the chipset can provide (4 max) go to the m.2 slots so yes you are correct.

Someone already did do a similar thing and got it working. So long as you can physically fit it then it will work electrically.
