My laptop idles at 58*C when im running on external monitor and at 49-53*C when running on the laptop's screen. Thats fine i guess....

But when i run GRID or any other code masters racing games for that matter, the temperature shoots up to 98*C but 89*C at menus. For crysis though, it rarely touched 90 and stayed at 80s. For Counter strike source it would go around at 70s and touch 85 and fall back.

Are these temperatures normal or should i do something about them?

What do you mean by 98C but 89C at menus. If it stays around 90 I would say that it's hot but not dangerous. Have you tried running something like Furmark to see how hot it gets under extreme load? In any event, you may want to do a couple of things such as clean the fan and heatsink, and swap out the thermal paste.

    Take off the bottom cover.

Clean the dust and put some new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.

If you ask me I definitely would do something. GF9600M is card that don't heat if the heatsink is well placed and good thermal paste is used. I overclocked mine to the speeds of GF9700M and then it idles at 34 degrees and on heavy load it never go above 95 (I set this temperature as safety shutdown from vBIOS). So if you can it's a good thing to change the thermal paste, especially if you are using stock one.

ok i need help here.. i tried removing the cover ( it broke my heart that i had tattered the white strip of paper which says warranty void :( ) but it was too darn tight... and yes there was only 1 screw securing it so i removed it.. i opened half ( after 2 mins of pulling ) smoothly and kept pulling it and the next second a piece of plastic securing it broke. but i pulled the cover slightly up anyways and i saw the heatsink, cleared some dust off the fan and see an idle temperature of 53*C ( it was 58*C ).

If you guys could tell me wht to do about this cover, it would be helpful as it is too damn tight!

There are 2 screws, 1 is under the warranty sticker.

Also from what I've read on the msi forums, your warranty is still ok even if you remove that sticker, but I don't know for sure..

    yeah found that screw, thanks!

referred to the disassemble manual of msi 1651 and saw 2 screws and realized that there must be one behind hte sticker... removed it!

    my other thread :-http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/497626-heatsink-has-no-dust-but-still-high-temperature.html

it would be great if the warranty is still on after the sticker is removed coz i have 2 years warranty, and yes half the sticker is off :$
